A hotel bell attendant meets guests at the entrance, takes their bags to the room or the storage room, and shows them how the room works. Between arrivals they deliver packages and amenities, keep the door clear and, at many resorts, drive the airport shuttle.

Skycaps and cruise porters move bags too, but they pass them on to the airline or the ship. A hotel bell attendant follows the bags to the room, may hold them for days, and is often the first and last person a guest talks to.
A group bus means dozens of bags at once
When a wedding party or a conference arrives, the bell team tags bags with room numbers from the rooming list, stages them in the back hall and runs them up floor by floor. Under federal rules, a per-bag porterage fee the group must pay under its contract is a compulsory service charge, not a tip, even when the hotel passes it to the bell staff. Tell the team how it's shared before the bus pulls in. Source: 29 CFR 531.55: Examples of amounts not received as tips (Cornell LII).
Stored bags need a paper trail
Early arrivals, late checkouts and wedding guests leave bags at the bell stand, sometimes for days. Each bag gets a claim ticket and goes back only against the matching stub, or after the ID check your policy sets when a stub is lost. A locked storage room and a written log protect the guest and the hotel when something goes missing.
The walk to the room sets up the stay
On the way up, the bell attendant shows the key, thermostat, Wi-Fi and safe, and mentions pool hours and restaurant times. It's also when guests point out a broken lamp or the wrong bed type, and a good attendant calls it in before leaving the room. At a sprawling resort the walk may be a cart ride along garden paths.
Some resorts put the bell team behind the wheel
Bell attendants often drive the airport or beach shuttle on a timetable. Under federal rules, a vehicle built to carry 16 or more people, counting the driver, counts as a commercial vehicle, and whoever drives it needs a commercial driver's license with a passenger endorsement. A van built for 15 or fewer falls below that line, but your insurer may still set its own driving record standard. Source: 49 CFR 383.5: Definitions, commercial motor vehicle (Cornell LII).
The door is part of hotel security
Bell staff see who walks in, what they carry and who lingers in the lobby without a room. O*NET lists acting as part of the security team as one of this job's tasks. Train attendants on what to report, to whom, and to call it in quietly by radio instead of confronting anyone. Source: O*NET OnLine: Baggage Porters and Bellhops (39-6011.00).
How much hotel bell attendants make
The closest BLS group for hotel bell attendants is baggage porters and bellhops. Baggage porters and bellhops who work for hotels, resorts, and motels earned a median of $17.51 an hour ($36,410 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $37,080 median for baggage porters and bellhops in all industries. About 16,580 of the 28,510 baggage porters and bellhops in that survey work for hotels and resorts.
Hourly plus the tips guests hand over for bags and deliveries. Some states let the hotel count part of those tips toward the minimum wage, while others, California and Washington among them, make the hotel pay the full state minimum wage, with tips on top.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
A friendly, unhurried greeting even at the end of a long run of arrivals
Follows the claim ticket steps every time, with no shortcuts during the rush
Steers a loaded bell cart through doors, elevators and crowds without scuffs
Gives clear directions around the hotel and the neighborhood
A driving record your insurer accepts, if the role drives the shuttle
Teach these on the job
Room features: keys, thermostats, Wi-Fi and in-room safes
The storage log, claim tickets and the lost-ticket ID check
Group arrivals: rooming lists, bag tags and floor-by-floor runs
Shuttle routes, the timetable and airport pickup spots
Hotel outlets, their hours and what's worth a walk nearby
The job runs on bell carts, two-part claim tickets, a storage log and a radio to the front desk, plus the arrivals and departures report from the property management system. Some hotels track stored bags and deliveries in a phone app instead of paper. If the role drives, put the shuttle's size and the license it needs in the ad.
Hotel bell attendant interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
The template leaves every target blank. Time a normal week of deliveries and count bag problems for a month or two, then pick numbers the team can still hit on a day with a group arrival.
Luggage delivery time after check-in
Note when the front desk calls for a delivery and when the bags reach the room, in the bell log or app. Look at group arrival days separately from regular days.
Lost or mishandled bags
Count bags lost, damaged by staff or sent to the wrong room, from incident reports and guest complaints. Review every case with the bell captain to find which step broke.
Positive guest mentions of bell service
Search post-stay surveys and online reviews for comments about the bell staff, the door or help with luggage. Count them monthly and pass praise that names someone to that attendant.
Shuttle runs on schedule
Compare each departure in the shuttle log with the posted timetable. Track late runs and missed pickups along with the reason, such as traffic, a late guest or no driver free.

Not quite. A door attendant works the curb: opens car doors, hails taxis, keeps the entrance lane moving and greets everyone who walks in. A bell attendant takes the bags from there to the room or to storage. Big city hotels may staff both posts. At many hotels this size one person covers the door and the bags, with some valet work mixed in, so describe every task in the job ad.
How much does a hotel bell attendant make?
Baggage porters and bellhops who work for hotels, resorts, and motels earned a median of $17.51 an hour ($36,410 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $31,040 and $44,450 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
What does a bell captain do?
The bell captain leads the bell staff on a shift. They set the order for who takes the next arrival, plan group bag runs from the rooming list, check the storage log and deal with the guest when a bag is lost or damaged. Many are promoted from the bell staff, and the job is a common step toward concierge or front office roles.
How do you prevent lost and damaged bags?
Use numbered two-part claim tickets, log every bag in and out, and keep the storage room locked with the key on a short list of names. Photograph luggage that arrives damaged before it goes on a cart. On group days, check each tagged bag against the rooming list before it leaves the back hall, since that's when bags reach the wrong room.
Do bell attendants need hotel experience?
No. The template asks for customer service time in a hotel, restaurant or store. Look for someone who stayed pleasant through rushes and followed a set routine, like cash handling or ticketing, without cutting corners. Room features, storage rules and the property map are easy to teach in the first weeks. A warm welcome at the door is much harder to teach.
