A general manager looks at next month. There's a wedding block and a full house over the holiday weekend. The overnight desk shift is open, and the last new hire quit before she finished training.
Every department is hiring at once, and each one needs something different. A room attendant has to learn your room standards and how the team assigns rooms. A front desk agent has to stay calm when a room isn't ready at check-in.
Hotels lose people fast. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 3.7% of accommodation and food service workers quitting in July 2026 alone. For all private-sector jobs, it was 2.1%.
Hotel interview questions for each department
Each department picks its own questions during setup. Most start here:
- Shifts: early housekeeping starts, the overnight audit, weekends, and holidays. Ask which shifts they can commit to.
- Guests: “Tell me about a guest whose room wasn't ready. What did you say?” Follow up on when they brought in a manager.
- Department experience: the property management system (PMS) for the desk, and room standards for housekeeping. For maintenance, ask about work orders, PTAC units and plumbing.
- Credentials: cards a role requires, like alcohol service for the bar.
- Pay and start date: base pay, how tips or service charges work, the training dates, and when they can start.
How HireBus works across departments
The job ads name the property, the shift, the pay and the perks you offer. HireBus writes each ad and posts it where hotel workers look.
Iris follows up and interviews applicants by phone with that department's questions. RightSeat™ gives each candidate a score for behavior, experience, and skills in that seat.
Department heads read the answers and the scores, then choose who to meet. Set interview times that work around check-in and room turns. Strong applicants who miss out this time stay on your bench for the next busy stretch.

Jobs at a hotel or resort
- Front desk agent / night auditor: the PMS and the check-in problems they've solved.
- Room attendant / houseperson: room standards, the equipment they've used, and reporting damage to the right person.
- Guest services / bell staff: local know-how and handling guest requests.
- Maintenance technician: work orders, in-room units, plumbing, and paint touch-ups.
- Food and beverage: servers, bartenders, cooks, and banquet staff. Ask about event setup, call times, and breaking down the room afterward.
- Supervisors and managers: housekeeping supervisors and front office managers who train new staff.
Questions hotel managers ask
Can every department hire at once?
Up to your plan's limit on active roles. The pricing page lists 1 active role on Starter, up to 3 on Growth and up to 10 on Max. Enterprise plans set role capacity with your team. Give each opening its own questions, and group openings that share duties and pay.
Can Iris check alcohol service or other credentials?
Iris can ask about them during the interview. Your team looks at the documents and confirms what the job requires.
