A painting sales manager leads the estimators who sell interiors, exteriors and cabinet refinishing in customers' homes. They own the production rates and prices behind each estimate, decide how far reps may discount, and make sure the crew can paint from the written scope without calling the rep.

A painting sales team runs a lot of estimates in a short season. The manager owns the system that prices them, the start dates the reps quote, and the paperwork that keeps a sold job sold.
Production rates set the margin
Painting estimates are usually built from production rates. That's how much wall, trim or siding a painter can cover in an hour, for each surface. If the rates are too hopeful, every job looks good on paper and loses money on site. The manager compares estimated hours with real crew hours on finished jobs. Then they fix the rates and prices with operations.
Winter sells the summer
Exterior jobs can be seasonal, the BLS says, and that shapes the sales year. Many companies start selling exteriors in late winter and fill the cold months with interiors and cabinets. Each week the manager checks the exterior backlog with production and sets the earliest start date reps may quote. A rep who promises June to win a job in March sets up an angry call in July. Lead rules reach the sales team
In general, a paid firm whose work disturbs paint in pre-1978 housing must hold lead-safe certification, issued by EPA or by an authorized state program. For sales, that means two things. Every pre-1978 bid prices lead-safe prep, containment and cleanup, unless there's documentation that the paint isn't lead-based. And the sold job is flagged for the office, so EPA's pamphlet reaches the owner on time. Source: U.S. EPA: Renovation, Repair and Painting Program for contractors.
Deposits and change orders follow state law
In California, home improvement down payments have a cap. Payments can't get ahead of the work done, and any change needs a signed, written change order before the work. Painting jobs change midstream when the crew finds rotted trim or the customer adds a room. The manager builds these rules into the contract, the payment plan and rep training, and confirms how your own state handles each one. Source: California CSLB: Learn about home improvement contracts.
The estimate becomes the work order
Whatever the rep writes is what the crew paints: which walls, ceilings and trim, how many coats, which colors and sheens, and who moves the furniture. A subcontracted painter works only from the paper, so the scope has to stand on its own. The manager sets a standard scope sheet and audits a sample of sold jobs each week. Reps whose jobs keep ending in disputes at the final walkthrough get coaching.
How much painting sales managers make
Sales managers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $124,650 a year ($59.93 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $148,270 median for sales managers in all industries. About 1,170 of the 637,080 sales managers in that survey work for building finishing contractors.
The template sets a base salary and adds bonus and commission on top. If the manager also runs estimates, decide whether those jobs count toward the team bonus or pay a separate commission.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Has run painting or remodeling estimates and can still walk a house better than the reps
Reads job-cost reports and spots production rates that are off
Gives reps specific notes after riding along on an estimate
Says no to a discount that wipes out a job's margin
Quotes start dates from production's real backlog, not from hope
Teach these on the job
The production rate tables in your estimating software
Which paint lines you sell at each price level
How lead-safe work changes labor and material on a bid
Your state's contract, deposit and cancellation rules
Close-rate and job-cost reports in your CRM
Painting sales teams price jobs in estimating tools like PaintScout or DripJobs, which hold the production rates, job options and proposal templates. The manager owns those settings and the CRM's close-rate reports. One changed production rate moves the price on every estimate after it, so changes should go through one person.
Painting sales manager interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Exterior work piles into a few months, so a slow February says little. Line each month up with the same one a year ago, and build your targets from your own close rates and crew capacity, not the template's samples.
Monthly Revenue
Signed revenue for the month after cancellations, set beside the production backlog. A record month the crews can't start until fall needs a talk with production.
Lead Conversion Rate
Jobs signed out of estimates run, broken out for interiors, exteriors and cabinets and for each lead source. A rep who closes cabinet jobs well may struggle with exteriors.
Sales Target Achievement
The number of estimators who reached their own monthly goal, from the CRM. Set each goal from the rep's lead mix, so a rep who gets mostly large exteriors isn't held to the job count of one selling bedrooms.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey scores on jobs the team sold, sorted by rep. Read the comments for scope gaps and color mix-ups, which a clearer estimate could have prevented.

Who sets prices at a painting company, the owner or the sales manager?
Often both. The owner, or a general manager, approves the price levels and the lowest margin allowed. The sales manager handles the day-to-day: updating production rates when job-cost reports show crews running long, passing on paint cost increases, and deciding which discounts reps may offer. Big changes go back to the owner.
How much does a painting sales manager make?
Sales managers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $124,650 a year ($59.93 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $83,970 and $153,740 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Is your top painting estimator the right pick for sales manager?
Only when they want to coach. Some top sellers would rather keep selling and resent the paperwork. The template also asks for two years in a leadership role in home services, which an internal pick may not have. Someone hired from another painting or remodeling company brings a tested process but has to learn your production rates and crews first. Try either one on ride-alongs before you decide.
How should commission work for painting estimators?
Write it down before the season starts. Painting jobs can grow after signing, when the crew finds rot or the homeowner adds a room, so decide whether change orders count toward the rep's commission. Plan for cancellations too. A buyer who signs at home often has a short window to cancel, set by the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule, so pay nothing on a job until that window closes.
How does a painting sales manager spend the winter?
Winter brings interiors and cabinets, and it's also when the manager gets ready for spring. They review last season's job costs and reset production rates, update proposal templates, and hire and train new estimators. With the rehash specialist, they plan calls to the fall exterior quotes that homeowners pushed to spring.
