An electrical sales manager heads the reps who sell EV chargers, standby generators, panel upgrades and remodel wiring to homeowners. Many also hold the home builder accounts. They hire and train the reps, set prices and discount limits, and make sure nothing gets sold that can't be permitted, scheduled and built.

This manager sells to two very different buyers, homeowners and home builders. Every job also depends on permits, inspections and, often, the utility.
Two buyers, two ways to sell
Homeowner sales happen at the kitchen table, a single job per visit. Builder work runs on contracts that last for months and fill crew calendars. The manager decides who holds each builder account, prices bids alongside the production manager, and keeps a large builder contract from swallowing the crew time homeowner jobs need.
Electricians bring many of the leads
Service electricians spot full panels, failing breakers and homes that can't handle a charger. The manager decides how those leads reach a rep and what the electrician earns for them. In California, a service repair worker is exempt from salesperson registration, but only while the visit sticks to the repair the customer asked for. Once the electrician sells a panel upgrade on that visit, the exemption may no longer apply. Source: California Business and Professions Code section 7152.
The license goes on the paperwork
State license rules reach your sales forms too. In Texas, every proposal, invoice and written contract must show the electrical contractor's name, address, phone number and license number. Invoices and contracts must also carry a notice that names the state agency. The manager owns the proposal form and checks it against the rules in each state you sell in. Source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation: Electricians compliance guide.
Promise only dates you control
A service upgrade runs on other people's calendars. In Oakland, California, PG&E's sign-off letter can take up to three days after the city permit is issued, and the inspector won't pass the job without it. Same-day release inspections aren't offered. A standby generator adds gas work on top of that. The manager sets the lead times reps can quote, and checks the backlog with the production manager every week. Source: City of Oakland: Requirements for inspection of electric and gas utilities.
Hazards without scare tactics
Reps find real problems: scorched breakers, a panel the electricians won't trust, aluminum branch wiring. The manager makes sure reps show the photo and the electrician's notes, explain the risk in plain words, and never stretch it to close a sale. One rep caught overstating a hazard can cost you referrals and a builder account.
How much electrical sales managers make
Sales managers who work for electrical contractors earned a median of $127,250 a year ($61.18 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $148,270 median for sales managers in all industries. About 1,460 of the 637,080 sales managers in that survey work for electrical contractors.
A salary plus commission, per the template. Builder accounts the manager sells personally may earn a separate rate, so write both rates into the plan.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
A track record selling home service work face to face
Finds the weak spot in a pipeline report: a rep, a lead source or a job type
Prices builder bids and homeowner jobs without giving away margin
Holds reps to honest hazard talk and approved discounts
Plans the backlog with the production manager so reps quote real dates
Teach these on the job
Your price book for panels, generators, chargers and rewires
Each builder account's plans and option sheets
The reports your CRM can pull
Which lenders you use and how a homeowner gets approved
Your permit, utility and inspection steps for each job type
The manager lives in the CRM (often ServiceTitan or Housecall Pro), a price book with panel, generator and charger packages, and a bid sheet or estimating program for builder work. Tell candidates which tools you run, and if the manager still goes on appointments.
Electrical sales manager interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Review these with the owner each month and compare them with your own history. Split every number into homeowner and builder work, since one big builder contract can hide a slow month at the kitchen table.
Revenue Growth
Compare the quarter's signed revenue, minus cancellations, with that quarter a year earlier. Show homeowner sales and builder contracts on their own lines, and note any big outage that pulled generator sales forward.
New Sales
New opportunities the manager opens personally, such as builder accounts, remodelers and repeat clients, logged in the CRM. Count one once a real job or bid is on the table.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey scores from customers whose jobs your reps sold. When scores dip, look for promised dates that hung on a utility or inspection step the rep didn't control.
Sales Conversion Rate
Of the qualified leads the team ran, how many signed, broken out by job type: panels, generators, chargers, remodel wiring and builder bids. Define qualified once, in writing, so the number means the same thing each month.
Should an electrical sales manager be a licensed electrician?
The template asks for sales management experience, not a license. Former electricians do read panels and job sites well, and builders tend to trust them. Either way, the master electrician owns the code and design calls. The sales manager's job is the team, the numbers and the pricing, and they bring the master electrician in before a tricky job is sold.
How much does an electrical sales manager make?
Sales managers who work for electrical contractors earned a median of $127,250 a year ($61.18 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $82,630 and $193,690 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Do commission plans have to be in writing?
In California, yes. State law says a commission agreement must be in writing and explain how commissions are figured and paid. The employer gives the employee a signed copy and gets a signed receipt back. Rules in other states differ. A written plan helps everywhere, especially for builder contracts that pay out over months and for jobs that cancel.
Where does the sales manager's job stop and production's start?
Sales runs everything up to the signed contract: leads, reps, pricing and proposals. Production runs what comes after: crews, wire and gear, permits and inspection dates. The two managers meet at least weekly on the backlog, because sales shouldn't promise dates that production can't meet.
How should a sales manager handle generator demand after a big outage?
A long outage brings a rush of generator calls that can last for weeks. Settle in advance how far out reps may quote install dates, and whether to add a temporary rep or a rehash push on old quotes. Keep pricing steady. Homeowners remember which company raised prices after a storm, and so do the builders who hear about it.
