What an assistant store manager owns in a specialty store
A store this size usually has one assistant, not a row of department managers. That person keeps product, cash and paperwork moving, and is the manager on duty several shifts a week.
The truck comes from your own warehouse
Most product arrives on the company's truck from its own warehouse, along with transfers from other stores. The assistant checks cartons against the shipping list, reports shortages and damage back to the warehouse, and gets new arrivals tagged and on the floor before the afternoon rush. Skip that check and the store eats the loss at inventory, with no way to trace it.
Markdowns have to ring up right
State weights and measures inspectors can check whether the price on a shelf tag or sign matches what the register charges. NIST publishes a price verification procedure that many state programs have adopted, and it can be used in any retail store. After a markdown or floor set, the assistant scans a sample of items against the new signs before the doors open. Source: NIST Office of Weights and Measures: Price verification FAQs.
Salary or hourly comes down to duties
Federal rules give a retail example: an assistant manager who supervises staff, orders merchandise, manages the budget and approves bills can have management as the main duty, even while spending over half the day on the register. One who is closely supervised and paid little more than hourly staff generally doesn't qualify. Nor does one who directs the team only when the store manager is out. Weigh the duties you actually hand over before choosing salary. Source: 29 CFR 541.700: Primary duty.
No one under 18 runs the baler
If the stockroom has a cardboard baler or compactor, federal child labor rules bar workers under 18 from operating or unloading it. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds may only load one that meets the ANSI safety standard, has a key-lock switch controlled by adults, stays switched off when not in use, and carries the required notice. The assistant who runs receiving should hold that key. Source: 29 CFR 570.63: Paper products machines, balers and compactors (HO 12).
Cycle counts feed the buyer's decisions
The central office sends a short list of items to count most days. The assistant counts or assigns them, looks into misses before keying them in, and fixes the cause: a mislabeled bin, a transfer nobody scanned, a return put back in the wrong size. Accurate counts are how the buyer and inventory planner know what to send next.
How much retail assistant store managers make
The closest BLS group for retail assistant store managers is First-Line supervisors of retail sales workers. First-Line supervisors of retail sales workers who work for retailers earned a median of $23.18 an hour ($48,220 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $48,520 median for First-Line supervisors of retail sales workers in all industries. About 997,650 of the 1,121,800 First-Line supervisors of retail sales workers in that survey work for retail stores.
Paid hourly with overtime or on a salary, depending on whether the job passes the federal exemption tests described below. A bonus, where there is one, usually follows the store's sales and shrink. These BLS figures include store managers, so an assistant's offer normally lands below the median.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Counts a safe and builds a deposit without errors, shift after shift
Moves a shipment from the truck to the floor without being told how
Trains a new associate on the register, returns and pickup orders in a shift or two
Makes calls as manager on duty that the store manager would back
Keeps a stockroom set up so anyone can find a size quickly
Teach these on the job
Your cash office forms and deposit routine
How your warehouse ships and how to report a shortage or damage
Your cycle count tool and what to check before keying a miss
Your floor set and markdown calendar
Your payroll and scheduling system
The job runs on the POS and its back office, a handheld RF scanner for receiving and cycle counts, the safe and cash office log, and the scheduling system. Time with any scanner and any cash office carries over from one chain to the next.
Retail assistant store manager interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Base each blank on how this store did over the last few months and on what the warehouse and central office expect, then tighten it as the assistant settles in.
Shipments processed to the floor on time
Time from the truck's arrival to the last carton on the floor, by shipment. Log each miss with its cause: a late truck, short staffing or a stockroom backlog.
Cycle count accuracy
Items whose count matched the system on the first try, out of all items counted that week. Track misses by cause so the fix goes to the process, not just the number.
Cash over and short
The week's register and safe overages and shortages, from the cash office log. Look for patterns by register, shift and person, and retrain the same week.
Pickup orders ready on time
Online orders picked, bagged and marked ready within the promised window, from the order system. Also count orders never collected, since calling those customers is part of the job.
New hire training completed on schedule
New associates who finished each training step, such as the register, returns and pickup orders, by the dates in your plan. Compare with the errors logged under their register ID in the first weeks.

What is the difference between an assistant store manager and a key holder?
A key holder opens, closes and covers shifts within set limits, and sells for most of the day. An assistant store manager has daily jobs of their own: the shipment, the stockroom, the safe and deposits. They also train new hires and help build the schedule. When something breaks, the key holder keeps the shift running and the assistant fixes the cause.
How much does a retail assistant store manager make?
First-Line supervisors of retail sales workers who work for retailers earned a median of $23.18 an hour ($48,220 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $38,260 and $61,660 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
How long before an assistant store manager is ready to run a store?
The store manager template asks for three or more years as an assistant, or two years running a store. Proof matters more than time. Has the assistant run the store alone for a full week, built a schedule inside the payroll budget, and led a holiday season? If so, they may be ready sooner.
Should an assistant store manager cover other stores?
The template says they may, and it's good training, since the assistant sees another manager's habits. Say so in the posting, with how far apart the stores are and how mileage works. If an hourly assistant starts the day at one store and finishes at another, federal rules count the drive between them as hours worked.
Does an assistant store manager need a college degree?
No. The template's education line is a high school diploma or equivalent, plus at least a year of retail supervising, such as key holder or shift lead. What predicts success is cash accuracy, follow-through without daily direction, and how the candidate handled their last holiday season.
