What makes warehouse work for a store chain different

At a parcel hub, a box comes in and goes out sealed. Here most vendor cartons get opened, checked piece by piece and made ready to sell before they leave for a store.

  • Counts go down to size and color

A carton of sweaters has to match the packing list by style, color and size, not just by carton count. A shortage caught at the dock becomes a vendor claim the buyer can use. One missed at the dock turns into a store asking where its mediums went and a count that never balances. Associates report short, over and damaged goods before they receive the shipment.

  • Floor-ready work happens here

Price tickets, security tags, hangers and folds all go on at the warehouse, to each store's standard. Done right, a store can unpack and hang. Done wrong, store staff spend selling hours fixing tags. Associates learn which tag goes on which product, where to place it so it doesn't harm the fabric, and what to do when a vendor's own ticket shows the wrong price.

  • Every store truck has a carton count

Store orders are picked from the inventory planner's allocation and loaded by store and by stop. Before the doors close, the loader checks the carton count against the shipping list. A box loaded on the wrong truck costs two stores at once: one is short, the other has stock it can't sell or send back easily.

  • The trailer has to stay put

Associates walk and roll pallet jacks onto trailers all day. OSHA's dockboard rule calls for wheel chocks or similar devices to keep the trailer from moving while people are on the dock plate, and for portable plates to be secured in place. Show each new hire who sets the chocks at your dock and how to confirm they're in place before walking onto the plate. Source: 29 CFR 1910.26: Dockboards (Cornell LII).

  • Ladders reach the overstock

Reserve stock often sits on high shelves above the pick area. OSHA's ladder rule says ladders get checked before their first use on every shift, a damaged one is tagged so nobody uses it, and the top step of a stepladder is not a step. OSHA also requires training on ladder care and use before an associate climbs one. Source: 29 CFR 1910.23: Ladders (Cornell LII).

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Checks style, color, size and count against paperwork and catches a mismatch before it ships
  • Works a handheld scanner and inventory screens without skipping steps
  • Keeps steady pace on repetitive work like ticketing and tagging
  • Follows dock, ladder, box cutter and equipment rules every time
  • Can work the posted shift, plus the extra hours the fall freight brings

Teach these on the job

  • Your receiving steps and how a receipt posts so stores and the website can see it
  • How each store wants goods hung, folded and tagged
  • Your bin location labels and where overstock goes
  • How store orders are picked, labeled and loaded by stop
  • Pallet jack use, and forklift driving after your own training and evaluation

Associates use handheld scanners tied to the inventory system, ticket and label printers, tagging guns and security tag tools, box cutters, and manual or powered pallet jacks, with forklifts in larger buildings. Experience on any scanner and receiving setup carries over; tagging retail goods is quick to teach.

Retail warehouse associate KPIs

Base the blanks on what your steady associates do in a normal month. Hold new hires to a lower start goal for their first weeks, and post the numbers where the crew can see them.

Receipts processed within your standard time
Vendor deliveries received in the system within your set time from unloading, out of all deliveries. Note when each truck finishes unloading, then compare it with the receipt time the system records.
Store shipment accuracy
Store orders that arrived with the right items and carton count, out of every store order shipped. Have each store note misses on its receiving sheet the day it unpacks, and find which picker or loader each one came from.
Units processed per hour
Units ticketed, tagged or picked, divided by hours on that task, from scanner logs. Compare people on the same task, since hanging coats takes longer than ticketing socks.
Cycle count accuracy on your locations
Counts by this associate that a lead's recount confirmed, out of all their counts checked. Recount a handful each week so careful counters get the credit they earned.

Retail warehouse associate FAQ

Do we need to hire warehouse associates with a forklift certification?

No. OSHA puts forklift training on the employer. You train each driver, evaluate how they drive in your building, and certify that each one passed. A card from a past job doesn't carry over on its own, though you can skip topics a new hire already learned if you evaluate them and find them safe. Federal child labor law also sets the minimum age for driving one at 18.

How much does a retail warehouse associate make?

Laborers and freight, stock, and material movers, hand who work for retailers earned a median of $17.81 an hour ($37,040 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $32,490 and $42,410 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

How is a warehouse associate different from a stock associate?

A stock associate works in one store: unloading that store's truck, filling the floor and keeping the back room in order. A warehouse associate works at the central building, taking freight from vendors and building the shipments every store receives. The skills overlap, so a careful stock associate is one of your best sources for warehouse hires.

Does a holiday attendance bonus count toward overtime?

Usually, yes. The Labor Department counts bonuses that are announced ahead and expected, including ones for attendance, accuracy, or production by a set formula, in the regular rate, which is what overtime is based on. So a promised peak-season bonus adds to the overtime pay owed for any overtime worked in the weeks it covers. A bonus that was never promised, decided only at the end, may be left out if it meets the FLSA's test for discretionary bonuses.

How do we test for accuracy in an interview?

Give candidates a packing list and a mixed carton, or a photo of one, with a wrong size and a missing item hidden in it. Give them a few minutes to check it. People who find both and say so plainly tend to catch the same mistakes on your dock.

Can warehouse associates move to online order fulfillment in the holidays?

Yes, and the template expects it. Web orders ship from the same building, so associates step in when the order queue runs high. Train each one on the pack station and the carrier labels before November, so a busy week isn't their first time there.
