A journeyman sprinkler fitter installs, fixes and services sprinkler, standpipe and fire pump piping in commercial towers, apartment complexes and plants, without a supervisor at their side. They work from shop drawings, run the pipe on a job, take inspection and repair calls, and lead apprentices.

A journeyman sprinkler fitter does pipefitting that fire officials and insurers both watch. State cards, system shutdowns and the line between sprinkler and alarm work shape the job.
Some states certify each fitter
Minnesota is one. A fitter who installs or repairs sprinkler systems for a contractor there needs a State Fire Marshal journeyman card or must be a registered apprentice. The card runs July 1 to June 30 and takes at least 10 hours of continuing education to renew. Exam candidates need 8,000 hours on fire protection jobs or a finished apprenticeship. Ask to see the card. Source: Minnesota State Fire Marshal: Fire protection licensing requirements.
Closing a valve puts the building at risk
When a fitter shuts a system down in a building that's in use, the building has lost its protection until the water is back. Each city or state sets the steps. Savannah's fire marshal, for one, wants red tags on the riser and fire department connection. When a fire watch is ordered, one person with no other duties walks the whole building and keeps a log. The insurer and other officials get notice within 24 hours. Source: City of Savannah Fire Marshal: Fire watch.
Inspection and testing can need its own license
In Texas, the state's license chart gives the right to perform and sign inspection, test and maintenance tags only to Responsible Managing Employee (RME) license holders. For a service fitter that's usually the General Inspector license: pass NICET's Level II test in inspecting and testing water-based systems and the state's sprinkler law test, and work for a registered company. An installer moving to service may need to test first. Source: Texas Department of Insurance: Fire sprinkler registration, licenses and tests.
Where sprinkler work stops and alarm work starts
Waterflow and valve tamper switches report to the building's fire alarm panel, and alarm work follows NFPA 72. Texas adopts NFPA 72 in its fire alarm rules, apart from its sprinkler rules. Wisconsin's sprinkler license rule leaves out repairing, replacing or maintaining electrical supervisory devices on existing systems. Before a system goes back in service, settle whether your fitter or the alarm company tests the signals. Source: 28 Tex. Admin. Code 34.607: Fire alarm adopted standards (Cornell LII).
How much journeyman sprinkler fitters make
The closest BLS group for journeyman sprinkler fitters is plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters. Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters who work for plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractors earned a median of $30.30 an hour ($63,010 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $63,800 median for plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters in all industries. About 330,570 of the 465,840 plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters in that survey work for plumbing, HVAC and sprinkler contractors.
The template pays hourly with performance bonuses, and overtime when jobs run long. The top of its range lands near the BLS median at plumbing, HVAC and sprinkler contractors, a figure that groups sprinkler fitters with plumbers and pipefitters, so compare it with what shops near you pay. Union fitters earn the rate in their local's agreement.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Pipes a floor from the shop drawings without needing to be checked
Holds the journeyman card your state requires, or can get one before starting
Threads, grooves and fits steel pipe, plus CPVC where you use it
Tags, notifies and restores every time a system goes out of service
Explains to a building engineer what was found and what it needs
Writes clear notes and takes photos on every work order
Teach these on the job
Your inspection forms or reporting app
Dry pipe and preaction valve trim, if they've mostly worked wet systems
Fire pump and backflow preventer work, if you do it
Your process for pricing and approving extra work
How a finished install gets handed to your inspection team
Expect pipe threading machines, roll groovers, test pumps, pressure gauges and scissor lifts, plus a tablet for drawings and inspection reports. In the ad, name the systems your crews work on most, such as wet, dry, preaction, standpipe or fire pump, and whether the job is installs, service or both.
Journeyman sprinkler fitter interview questions
Two of the 7 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Handling an impairment
On an inspection, you find a closed control valve on a floor that should be protected. Nobody at the building knows why it's closed. What do you do?
A strong answer: Treats it as an impairment: tells the building contact, checks whether a repair or leak explains it, notifies monitoring, reopens it fully, runs a main drain test to confirm, checks why supervision didn't catch it, and reports it.
Behavioral · Doing it right under time pressure
Tell me about a time someone pushed you to rush a hydro test or an inspection.
A strong answer: Names the real pressure, explains the risk to the person pushing, offers options like phasing or more help, and finishes to standard. Can say how it turned out.
Pull a season of inspection results and work orders before setting these. Compare fitters on similar jobs, since a warehouse retrofit and a service call aren't the same work.
First-time installation accuracy
Inspections on the fitter's work, from rough-in through the pressure test and final, that passed on the first try, against all inspections on their jobs. Note the reason for each failure, such as hanger spacing or head placement, so training targets the real problem.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ask the general contractor's superintendent or the building manager after each job or call. Read what they say about stained ceiling tiles, water on floors and whether the fitter warned them before shutting a system down.
Service Call Completion Rate
Work orders closed on the scheduled day, against all assigned, from your field software. Set aside orders stalled by back-ordered heads or a locked riser room before you rate the fitter.
Safety Compliance
Spot-check jobs for lift use, dust controls, hot work steps and impairment tags, and read incident and near-miss reports. Count missed steps per check, not just injuries.
It depends on the state. Minnesota and Wisconsin give each fitter a state card. Texas registers sprinkler companies and licenses responsible managing employees, and its list of individual licenses has no journeyman fitter license. Rules elsewhere vary, so ask your state fire marshal's licensing office, and the fire marshal in each city you work in, what they require.
How much does a journeyman sprinkler fitter make?
Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters who work for plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractors earned a median of $30.30 an hour ($63,010 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $49,650 and $83,730 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
What does the template mean by a fire suppression certification?
There's no single national certificate. In practice it means the journeyman card your state issues, where it has one, or a NICET card in inspection and testing for service work. Swap in the exact credential your state and your customers expect, so applicants know what to bring.
How long should a journeyman sprinkler fitter have worked in the trade?
The template asks for three to five years installing and maintaining systems. Most fitters get there after a full apprenticeship, which runs four or five years, so count that time toward it. Ask what system types they've installed, since years on wet systems in offices don't cover dry pipe in a cold warehouse.
Can a journeyman do inspections as well as installs?
Often, yes, but check your state. Wisconsin lets a licensed journeyman handle annual tests on systems already in place, along with installs and repairs. In Texas, only RME license holders, usually with the General Inspector license, perform and sign the tags. NICET's inspection and testing program covers NFPA 25 work and impairment steps, a good path for an installer who wants to move into service.
What should a journeyman sprinkler fitter job ad include?
Say whether the job is new construction, service and inspection, or both, and the building types you work in. Name the license or certificate required in your state, whether you pay for NICET tests, the on-call rotation, and how far fitters drive. Mention the truck, tools and tablet you provide.
