A sprinkler price rests on facts you can't see from the lobby: how much water the street main can deliver, what sits on the racks, and what the last inspector actually tested. Good reps learn those first, because a missed fact turns into a change order or a lost account.
Water supply data comes before a design price
A new or extended system is designed around the pressure and flow the city main can deliver, which a hydrant flow test measures. In Sioux Falls, for example, the city schedules flow tests, charges a fee set by ordinance, and says the results help the design engineer plan the system. Ask whether a recent test exists before you quote. Weak supply can mean a fire pump, and that changes the whole job. Source: City of Sioux Falls, South Dakota (example): Smith taps and flow testing.
Ask what's stored, how it's packed and how high
In a warehouse, the sprinkler design depends on the goods, their packaging and pallets, and how high they're stacked. A new tenant with plastic goods or taller racks can outgrow a system that was fine before. Madison, Wisconsin, for example, issues high-piled storage permits in existing buildings so the fire department can check that the system matches the storage. Ask for the tenant's product list and rack drawings before you price anything. Source: City of Madison, Wisconsin, Fire Department (example): High-piled storage work permit.
Read the last report before a takeover quote
When an owner is switching inspection companies, ask for the last two years of reports. Look at which tests were done, which deficiencies stayed open, and whether quarterly and multiyear tests appear at all. Warn the owner that your first inspection may turn up items the old reports didn't list, and price that first visit honestly. An owner surprised by a long first deficiency list may think you're padding it.
Check the heat before choosing wet or dry
Pipe full of water can't run through a space that freezes, such as a parking garage, a loading dock or an unheated attic. Note every unheated area on the walk, because it may need a dry system, antifreeze or added heat, and the designer makes that call. Each choice changes the price and the yearly testing that follows. Ask the owner whether any heated space might lose its heat later.
How much fire suppression sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for fire suppression sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractors earned a median of $38.24 an hour ($79,530 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s above the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 24,510 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for plumbing, HVAC and sprinkler contractors.
More than half of the service sales reps BLS counts at sprinkler, plumbing and HVAC firms earn above the template's top base, and those BLS wages include commission. When you post the job, show what a typical rep at your company took home last year, base and commission together.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Walks a building and records risers, valves, pumps, ceiling types and unheated spaces accurately
Makes wet, dry and preaction choices clear to an owner with no fire background
Asks for flow test data, storage details and past reports before quoting
Writes proposals that name every test, repair and exclusion line by line
Keeps in touch with property managers between inspections, not just at renewal
Teach these on the job
The install and inspection standards, and which editions apply locally
Your inspection pricing and the tests each agreement includes
Reading sprinkler drawings and hydraulic calculation sheets well enough to sell from them
Who in your company signs drawings and inspection tags, and why
Site rules for riser rooms, roofs and confined spaces
Give each rep a tablet loaded with the site survey form, the CRM and past inspection reports, plus a laser measure and a flashlight for ceilings and riser rooms. Tell candidates whether a designer or estimator prices larger jobs, and whether reps sell installs, service or both.
Fire suppression sales representative interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Handling questions beyond their knowledge
A restaurant owner asks whether the kitchen's old hood suppression system is still allowed. You're not sure. What do you do?
A strong answer: Says so, takes photos and model details, checks with a technician, and follows up in writing by a promised date.
Behavioral · Running the full sale
Tell me about the turning point in an inspection or install deal you closed.
A strong answer: Clear steps, a real understanding of the buyer's problem, and a specific moment that moved the deal.
Track installs apart from inspection agreements and repairs; a single install can outweigh a rep's month of service sales. The template's numbers are a sketch; each rep's goals should come from what that rep sold over the past year.
New Sales
Each quarter, total the rep's signed installs, new inspection agreements and repair approvals from the CRM. Count an inspection agreement by its buildings and yearly value, so a twelve-building portfolio isn't scored like a single repair.
Proposal Conversion Rate
Of the proposals the rep sent, the share that signed, with installs, inspection agreements and repairs on separate lines. Bids to take over buildings another company serves get a line of their own.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ask the property manager or owner to rate the sale after the first inspection or after the install is accepted. Include one question on whether anything on the first bill came as a surprise.
Leads Generated
Qualified leads the rep finds each month: a decision maker at a building with systems you can serve, plus a due date, a deficiency list, an insurer's request or a project. Purchased lists don't count until someone talks.
Does a sprinkler sales rep need NICET certification?
Not to sell. NICET certifies technicians who inspect, test and lay out systems, and its inspection program starts at Level I, for limited tasks under direct supervision. A rep who has studied for Level I or II reads reports and talks with inspectors more easily, so some companies pay for the test. Drawings and inspection tags still come from the people your state licenses for them.
How much does a fire suppression sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for plumbing, heating, and air-conditioning contractors earned a median of $38.24 an hour ($79,530 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $59,030 and $104,420 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Should a sprinkler rep quote from drawings alone?
For a bid on a new building, the drawings are what you have, so price from them and fill in the scope sheet. For anything in an existing building, walk it. Ceilings, obstructions, heat, storage and access each move the price, and the drawings may not match what was built.
Which sprinkler jobs need a designer before the rep quotes?
Any job that changes how much water the system must deliver. Examples are higher storage, a new tenant with different goods, an added area, a fire pump, or a first system in an old building. Those need hydraulic calculations, and in some states drawings signed by a licensed person. Give a budget range at most until the designer has looked.
What physical tasks come with sprinkler sales site visits?
The rep drives the region and stands through long walk-throughs and meetings. They look above ceiling tiles and into riser rooms, and carry a bag of up to 25 pounds with a laptop, drawings and sample heads. If a survey means entering a valve pit or tank, the rep goes in only after the company's confined space training and under its entry permit rules. Spell out those tasks when you advertise, and tell applicants who reviews requests for accommodation.
