A home builder field supervisor runs a group of houses in one community and keeps each one moving from footings to final inspection. They set the day's order for the subcontracted trades, check work before it gets covered up, and fix problems before they cost a closing date.

What changes for a field supervisor at a home builder
This supervisor rarely has a crew of their own. The framers, plumbers and painters work for other companies, and the houses sit side by side on one street, so the job is about order, records and neighbors.
A rail on the stairs before the trim crew comes
Interior stairs usually go in with the framing, but the finished rail and balusters wait for trim. OSHA's construction rules say a stairway with four or more risers, or one rising more than 30 inches, needs at least one handrail and a stair rail on each open side. Until the trim carpenter arrives, the supervisor makes sure a temporary rail goes up and stays up. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.1052, stairways.
In Missouri, the locate request comes before the shovel
Missouri's law on underground lines counts digging, trenching, augering, grading and backfilling as excavation. The excavator has to notify the state's one-call center at least two working days ahead of digging, but not more than ten. On a new street full of fresh utility lines, the supervisor checks that whoever is digging footings, sewer lines or mailbox posts has a current ticket and can still see the marks. Source: Missouri Revised Statutes 319.026: notice of intent to excavate.
Some neighbors already moved in
In a growing community, a family may be living next to the lot you're framing. Mud on the street, trash blowing into yards and trucks across driveways turn into calls to the sales office. Set the time trades can start making noise, check your city's rules on work hours, and walk the street before everyone leaves for the day.
Back-charges need a photo and a date
When a trade leaves damage behind, like a chipped tub or a wall gouged by another crew, the repair cost should go back to the company that caused it. That only works if the supervisor records it the day it's found, with a photo, the lot number and who worked in the house. Without that record, the builder ends up paying for the fix.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Reads plans and plot plans well enough to catch a mistake before it's built
Gets trades who don't work for the builder to show up and finish
Spots framing, plumbing and drywall defects by sight
Keeps a written record of problems, calls and inspections
Stays calm when a buyer stops by with questions
Teach these on the job
Your plans, options and the order your trades come in
Your scheduling and punch list software
Your city's inspection steps and how to book them
OSHA rules for stairs, ladders and digging on your sites
Your back-charge and purchase order process
Home builder supervisors work from a phone or tablet with a builder scheduling app such as BuildPro or Buildertrend, plus a camera, a tape and a level for checks. List the app in the ad, since supervisors coming from other builders often know one of them.
Home builder field supervisor interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Holding trades to standard
The trim carpenter's work on three houses has gaps and hammer marks. They say they're behind and underpaid. What do you do?
A strong answer: Walks the houses with them, marks every item, requires fixes before approving payment, and raises the pricing complaint with purchasing separately.
Behavioral · Working with trade partners
Tell me about a time you got a trade partner to fix a quality problem without damaging the relationship.
A strong answer: Was specific and fair, showed the standard, gave a deadline, and followed up, and the trade kept working well afterward.
Use the template's numbers as a rough guide, and base yours on last year's closings and warranty claims in this supervisor's community.
On-time project completion rate
Count houses that reached final inspection by the target date set when it started, out of all houses the supervisor finished that quarter. Note the cause when a date slips, such as weather, a trade or a permit.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Use the buyer survey sent after closing and after the first warranty visit, and read the questions on build quality and communication, not the ones about sales.
Safety Incident Rate
Count injuries and near misses reported on the supervisor's lots each quarter, whoever's crew was involved, and go over each one at the next morning briefing.
Craftsmanship Quality Score
Score each house against your written checklist at framing, before drywall and at final, and track the items the city inspector or the buyer found that your own check missed.
Career path
Assistant superintendentShadows a supervisor, runs punch lists and books city inspections.
Field supervisorRuns a set of houses in one community and the trades in them.
Production managerLeads the supervisors and sets build standards for every community.
Many do, often shortened to super. It's the person on site in charge of a group of houses and every trade working in them. Use both titles in the posting, because supers at other builders search for the word they know. Some builders split the work, with one super for starts through drywall and another for trim through closing.
How much does a home builder field supervisor make?
First-Line supervisors of construction trades and extraction workers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $36.53 an hour ($75,980 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $60,510 and $93,660 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
What should a new field supervisor do in the first month?
Walk every house in the community with the production manager or the supervisor they're replacing. Meet each trade's foreman on site, learn your plans and options, and stand in on a few city inspections. By the end of the month they should run their own morning briefing and keep their own notes without help.
Should a home builder give its field supervisors a truck?
Decide before you post, and say which you offer. A supervisor drives between lots all day and hauls small things like a ladder, lockboxes or a few sheets of drywall for repairs, so a company truck or a vehicle allowance belongs in the offer. If they'll drive your truck, ask your auto insurer what it needs from drivers. Before a screening company pulls a candidate's record for you, the FCRA says to tell them in a separate written notice and get their signed okay.
What site work sits behind the field supervisor template's physical lines?
The ladder line covers climbing to a second-floor deck or into an attic to check framing and insulation. Lifting means moving a box of tile or a bundle of trim out of the way, not hauling loads all day. Weather means walking lots in summer and in winter rain, and the bending and overhead lines cover looking under sinks and up at ceilings during checks. Write the ad around those tasks.
