What makes house cleaning field supervision different

Most supervisors can see their team from one spot. A house cleaning supervisor's teams are spread across a branch's whole service area, and the proof of their work starts to fade the moment the family walks back in.

  • Inspections happen before the family gets home

The best time to score a clean is as the team wraps up or soon after, while the house is still empty. The supervisor walks each room holding the checklist the team cleaned from. They run a hand along baseboards and door tops, look inside the microwave and behind the toilet, and take photos. A score taken the next day measures the family's mess, not the team's work.

  • Complaints come with a clock

The template asks for most concerns to be settled within a day. That usually means a call to the customer the same afternoon, a look at the problem in person, and a choice: send a team back, credit the visit, or explain what the service covers. Then the supervisor walks the team through what was missed, so the same gap doesn't follow them into the next house.

  • The team's tips aren't the supervisor's

Customers often tip the team, and a supervisor who helps on a clean may expect a share. Under federal tip rules, a manager or supervisor can't be paid out of a tip pool, and can keep only a tip a customer hands them directly for service they alone gave. Who counts as a supervisor depends on duties: mainly managing, directing two or more full-time workers, and the power to hire or fire, or real weight in those calls. Source: U.S. Department of Labor: Fact Sheet #15, tipped employees under the FLSA.

  • Serious injuries start a reporting clock

A slip on a freshly mopped floor or a fall from a step stool happens far from the office, and the supervisor is often first to hear. OSHA requires employers to report a work-related death within 8 hours, and a worker admitted to a hospital, an amputation or a lost eye within 24 hours. The supervisor gets the facts to the office right away so the report goes in on time. Source: OSHA: Reporting fatalities, hospitalizations, amputations and losses of an eye (29 CFR 1904.39).

  • Fill-in days hide a staffing gap

When a housekeeper calls out, the supervisor often joins the short team so the customer's visit still happens. That saves the day but leaves no one inspecting. Log every fill-in day. If a supervisor spends more days cleaning than checking, the branch needs more housekeepers, and the quality numbers will slide until it gets them.

How much house cleaning field supervisors make

The closest BLS group for house cleaning field supervisors is First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers. First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $49,100 median for First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers in all industries. About 66,480 of the 178,760 First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers in that survey work for building services companies.

Many companies pay this role a yearly salary, add a bonus based on inspection scores and complaint counts, and provide a car or pay mileage. Being salaried doesn't by itself mean no overtime. Federal rules also look at duties: managing as the main job, directing two or more full-time workers, and a real voice in hiring and firing.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Knows residential cleaning well enough to spot a rushed job in one walk-through
  • Gives a housekeeper hard feedback in a way they'll act on
  • Keeps their temper and owns mistakes when a customer is upset
  • Keeps a full day of visits on time across a wide area
  • Writes short, clear inspection notes backed by photos

Teach these on the job

  • Your inspection checklist and how to score it
  • Your rules for re-cleans, credits and refunds
  • The scheduling and inspection apps your branch uses
  • Chemical safety rules and what to do after an injury
  • Leading people who used to be teammates

Field supervisors run the day from a phone: the maid service scheduling software the office uses, ZenMaid or Housecall Pro for example, to see where every team is, plus an inspection form or app and the camera for photos. Most also keep a spare vacuum and supply kit in the car for fill-in days.

House cleaning field supervisor KPIs

Pull these from inspections and surveys on the teams this supervisor covers. Before holding anyone to a target, look at where your branch has landed over the last season.

Cleaning Quality Score
The average score from the supervisor's own inspections, with one checklist for every home. Re-inspect a few of their homes yourself each month, so the number reflects the work and not an easy grader.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ratings from the follow-up survey on homes this supervisor's teams cleaned, tracked by month and set beside other branches. Comments point to missed rooms, late arrivals and rude moments.
On-site Issue Resolution
Hours from a customer's complaint to a remedy they agree to, logged in your scheduling software. A complaint closes when the customer agrees it's handled, not when a return visit is booked.
Staff Productivity Compliance
Visits that started and ended inside their booked window, taken from each team's time punches. Sort late visits by team and by cause, such as traffic, a lockout or a short team.

House cleaning field supervisor FAQ

What does a house cleaning field supervisor do?

Expect them at a desk for only a small part of the week. A typical day mixes inspections of finished cleans, time with a newer team, a visit to a customer who called with a concern, and a stop at the branch for supplies. O*NET's task list for cleaning supervisors includes inspecting finished work, looking into complaints and training staff.

How much does a house cleaning field supervisor make?

First-Line supervisors of housekeeping and janitorial workers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $23.11 an hour ($48,070 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $39,370 and $62,180 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Field supervisor or lead housekeeper: who does what?

A lead housekeeper cleans every day and runs one team inside each home. A field supervisor oversees many teams, checks their work after they leave, and takes over when a customer is unhappy. The lead catches a missed spot before the team drives off. The supervisor finds the pattern behind misses that keep coming back. Many companies fill this job by promoting their best leads.

Should a field supervisor announce inspections?

Tell teams that any home can be inspected, but not which ones. Mix random checks with planned ones, such as a new team's first week or a home with a recent complaint. Share each score with the team that day, with photos, so the inspection teaches something instead of turning up as a surprise weeks later.

How much experience should a house cleaning field supervisor have?

Two years of supervising in housekeeping or a related field is the template's bar. A lead housekeeper who has trained several new hires may have that, even without the title. Test it: give them your checklist and, with the customer's OK, send them through a home your team just cleaned. What they catch, and how they'd explain it to the team, shows more than any resume.

What goes in a house cleaning field supervisor job ad?

How many teams and branches they'll cover, the area they'll drive, and how many homes a day you expect them to inspect. Say how many cleans a month they'll likely work themselves, who covers after-hours calls and how often, and what the bonus is based on. If the role also hires and trains housekeepers, say that too, because it changes who applies.
