What a chimney stockroom holds

Most of the shelf is small parts the trucks use every day. The rest is steel cut for one house's flue, and appliances that arrive with federal labels and paperwork.

  • A liner is measured once and cut once

Special-order liners come by diameter, length and alloy, with a tee, top plate and cap to match. When one arrives, check it against the technician's measurements and the signed proposal, not just the packing slip. A liner a few feet short can't be stretched on the roof. Tell the office the same day whether it's ready or what's wrong, so nobody books an install around the wrong part.

  • Sweep trucks run on brushes and rods

Each truck needs brushes in the sizes and shapes of the flues its route will meet: round for metal liners and round tile, square and rectangular for clay tile. Check each liner maker's cleaning instructions for the bristle to use. Add rods, vacuum filters, drop cloths, caps and dampers in common sizes, mortar and high-heat sealant. Restock from what each closed job used.

  • Wood stoves and inserts come with labels and papers

A new wood or pellet stove or insert can't be advertised or sold without its permanent EPA label, and nobody may alter, deface or remove that label. A seller other than the maker meets the paperwork rule by getting the owner's manual and warranty from the maker or distributor and passing them to the buyer unaltered. So check each box on arrival for the label, the manual and the warranty, and keep a display model's papers with it. • Warranty claims need the part and the paper trail

Liner and vent makers set their own claim rules. DuraVent's residential warranty for products sold from May 29, 2026 wants proof of when and where the part was bought, proof of install or maintenance, and photos or video. The claim is due within 15 days after the problem is found, the maker gets to inspect before anyone repairs it, and labor isn't covered. Tag the failed part to its job and keep it until the maker says otherwise. Source: DuraVent: Lifetime limited warranty, residential applications (May 2026), one maker's example.

  • Buy where the warranty holds

Some makers back only products bought from their authorized sellers. DuraVent, for one, limits its U.S. warranty to products bought from it or its authorized sellers, and says it may reject claims for items bought from unauthorized internet sites. Keep each supplier's dealer status on file, and check it before saving on a liner kit from an online seller. How much chimney service inventory specialists make

The closest BLS group for chimney service inventory specialists is shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks. Shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $22.60 an hour ($47,010 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Checks a liner delivery against field measurements, not just the slip
  • Keeps truck stock lists current and restocks from closed jobs
  • Holds failed parts and their paperwork until a claim is settled
  • Logs each receipt and each part issued before the day ends
  • Chases short or late orders before a crew needs the part

Teach these on the job

  • Liner diameters, lengths, alloys and kit parts
  • Brush sizes and shapes for tile and metal flues
  • Each maker's warranty claim form
  • EPA labels and papers on wood stoves and inserts
  • Job and inventory screens in your field software

Stock is tracked in the field software's inventory module or a standalone inventory program, with a barcode scanner, supplier portals and each maker's online warranty claim form. Shelving needs room for long liner coils and boxed inserts, plus a hand truck for the heavy boxes.

Chimney service inventory specialist interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Fixing a wrong part on the roof

A technician calls from a roof: the cap you staged is the wrong size. What do you do?

A strong answer: Finds the right size fast from stock or a supplier, gets it there or helps reschedule, and adds a staging check against the measurements on the work order.

  2. Behavioral · Finding count errors

Tell me about a time liner or cap counts on the shelf didn't match the system right before the fall rush. What caused the gap?

A strong answer: Traced it to a cause such as unrecorded truck pulls or receiving errors, fixed the records and changed the process before the rush.

Chimney service inventory specialist KPIs

Count for a full season before setting targets. Truck stock moves fastest in the fall, and special orders in spring and summer.

Inventory accuracy rate
Compare what the records say is in the storeroom and on each truck with what is really there, item by item. Write down why each miss happened, for example a cap used on a sweep but never added to the invoice.
Material order fulfillment rate
Orders that arrived complete and correct by the date the job needed them, out of all orders. Keep special-order liners on their own line, since one late liner moves an install.
Stock-out incidents
Jobs that waited, or trucks that ran out, because a part wasn't in stock. Log each one when it happens, with the part and the branch.
Reduction in order processing time
Time from a technician's parts request to the order going out, from the timestamps on both. Compare each quarter with last year's.

Chimney service inventory specialist FAQ

How should the ad handle the template's physical stamina line?

Stamina is about the person's body. Write the job's tasks instead: lifting cartons, caps and liner coils of up to 50 pounds, the template's limit, moving boxed inserts with a hand truck or a second person, loading trucks, and working in a storeroom that runs cold in winter and hot in summer. Describe those tasks in the posting, talk through each one with every candidate, and offer reasonable accommodation where needed.

How much does a chimney service inventory specialist make?

Shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $22.60 an hour ($47,010 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $39,520 and $55,800 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

How much should a chimney inventory specialist stock before fall?

Start from what each branch used last September through December: caps and dampers by size, brushes and rods, vacuum filters, sealant, and the liner diameters you install most. Place the big orders in summer, so a back order shows up while there's still time to fix it. Branches differ, since one full of older masonry chimneys uses other parts than one with mostly factory-built fireplaces.

Which warranty applies to a liner that has sat on the shelf?

Ask the maker, because terms change and the dates can be hard to read. DuraVent's newest residential warranty applies to products sold on or after May 29, 2026, and says it supersedes warranty statements printed in manuals and packaging. A liner bought before that date and installed after it can fall in a gray area. Keep a dated copy of each maker's warranty with the purchase, so a claim years later starts from the right terms.

Where do good chimney inventory specialists come from?

The counter at a hearth distributor or masonry supply yard, or the stockroom of a heating contractor. They already know vent parts or mortar and how orders and returns work. A sweep who wants off the roof can fit too, bringing a sense of which parts the trucks run out of in October.
