A drywall price comes from the rooms, the ceilings and the way into the house, not just the square feet of wall. Garages, bathrooms and insurance jobs each bring a rule the proposal has to follow.
Ceilings and stairways set the price
Measure the ceiling height in every room, and note vaults, stairwells and two-story spaces, which add staging and slow the hang. Check whether long sheets can make the turn up the stairs or down a hallway. Shorter sheets mean more joints, and more joints mean more finishing hours. In a lived-in house, note where board can be stacked and how far it gets carried, and price the floor covers.
Garage walls have a code minimum
Kentucky, for example, builds homes to the 2015 IRC with its own amendments, and the City of Paducah's guide to that code spells out the garage rule. A garage gets at least half-inch gypsum board on the garage side of walls shared with the house and its attic. Under a living space, the garage ceiling gets 5/8-inch Type X board, and the walls holding it up get half-inch board. So a garage or bonus room quote names the board, and a rep never thins it to beat a cheaper bid. Shower walls need a tile backer
Moisture-resistant board is not a shower wall. USG's sheet for one of its mold-resistant panels says it isn't suitable as a tile base in tubs, showers or other spots that get direct water. On a bathroom remodel, the proposal says who supplies and hangs the backer behind the tile. Unless your crews hang that backer, write the tub and shower walls out of the drywall scope. Insurance jobs need Louisiana's notice
In Louisiana, for example, some contracts must carry a set notice in bold type of at least 12 points. That covers a contract of one thousand dollars or more that is expected to be paid at least partly from a property insurance claim. The notice says the owner must pay the deductible and a seller may not help them skip it. Another section bars charging more than the usual price to cover any of the deductible. Put the notice in the water-damage contract, word for word. Source: Louisiana R.S. 51:452, notice in contracts paid with insurance proceeds (example).
How much drywall and plaster sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for drywall and plaster sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for drywall and insulation contractors earned a median of $30.18 an hour ($62,780 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 2,980 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for drywall and insulation contractors.
BLS counts commission in its pay figures, so compare the template's base with what reps at drywall and insulation contractors make in a full year: about a quarter earn no more than its lowest base, and more than half earn more than its highest. Commission and target bonuses have to cover that gap.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Measures rooms, ceiling heights and access, and counts sheets by size
Names a wall's texture on sight, from hand-troweled plaster to a knockdown ceiling
Writes proposals that name the board, finish level, texture and visits
Spots a pre-1978 home or an old textured ceiling and flags it before pricing
Uses a moisture meter and won't price a stained wall as ready until it's dry
Teach these on the job
Your price book and minimum charge
Garage, bathroom and basement code points where you work
Your insurance-job contract and its required notice
How many visits each kind of repair takes on your crews' schedule
Which backer boards and moisture-resistant panels your crews hang
Reps carry a laser measure, a moisture meter for water-damaged walls, a bright work light to show an owner how a finish looks with light across it, and a tablet with the proposal tool and price book. Texture sample boards help an owner pick a match before the price is final.
Drywall and plaster sales representative interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Fire-rated repairs
A landlord wants the cheapest fix for a hole in the fire-rated wall between two apartments. What do you tell them?
A strong answer: Explains that the repair has to keep the wall's fire rating, quotes matching rated board, fasteners and joint treatment, and doesn't offer a quick patch that breaks the rating.
Behavioral · Prospecting
Tell me about how you found new business in a slow month.
A strong answer: Names specific outreach, such as calling past customers, visiting contractors or writing to neighbors near jobs, and what it produced.
Review these monthly with the sales manager, and judge a new rep on visits run and proposal quality before close counts. After a year, set targets from your own proposals.
New Drywall/Plaster Deals Closed per Month
Signed proposals in the month, tagged repair, remodel, basement, garage, plaster or insurance. Read the count next to the crew days each job books, since a basement finish fills far more of the schedule than a patch.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Count the low scores on this rep's jobs that name a texture match or a patch that still shows, and walk one of those rooms with the rep.
Leads Generated Weekly
New qualified leads the rep found, such as remodelers, property managers or neighbors of a current job, logged in the CRM. Tag remodeler and property manager referrals apart, since one source can send many jobs.
Conversion Rate from Site Visits
Signed jobs divided by site visits the rep completed. Insurance jobs waiting on an adjuster sit on their own line until the claim decision is in.
Career path
Lead finisherKnows textures, plaster and what a patch really takes.
Sales representativeMeasures, prices and sells repairs, remodels and plaster work in homes.
EstimatorMoves on to builder plans and contractor bids from drawings.
Sales managerRuns both the in-home reps and the estimators.
It depends on the town. Kentucky's code rule, for example, says a single-family home needs no permit, inspection or certificate of occupancy unless a local law requires one. Some cities and counties do. Check with the local building office before quoting a basement, garage or remodel. If a permit is needed, write down who pulls it, and don't book the hang until any required framing inspection has passed.
How much does a drywall and plaster sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for drywall and insulation contractors earned a median of $30.18 an hour ($62,780 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $45,550 and $87,450 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Can a drywall rep tell a homeowner what insurance will cover?
No. Leave coverage to the adjuster. In Louisiana, for example, a contractor's staff may not interpret what a policy covers. The contractor must also give an itemized, good-faith estimate before the owner signs an agreement for claim repairs. Price the repair the way you would any other, send the estimate to the adjuster when the owner asks, and file a copy with the job.
How can I see whether a rep candidate can price drywall work?
Give finalists the photos and room sizes from a basement finish you've already sold, with a soffit, a low beam and a stair wall. Ask for a sheet count, the finish level and the number of visits, then compare with what your crew used. Close numbers matter less than their questions: ceiling height, how board gets downstairs and what the owner plans to paint.
The template asks reps to climb ladders and cross uneven ground. How should the ad say it?
Ship both lines unchanged, and add what they mean on a visit. A rep climbs a stepladder to look at a ceiling crack and walks basements with framing and debris on the floor. They measure garages and attic rooms, and carry a tablet and texture samples, within the 25 pounds the template names. Invite candidates to ask for reasonable accommodation.
