What a fence rep checks before pricing

Footage is the easy part. The fence also has to hold the dog, suit the neighbors, fit the lot's rules and hold up in the color the homeowner picked, and the rep sorts that out in the yard.

  • The dog writes the spec

Ask about the dog before talking styles. A small dog can slip through picket gaps or under a gate, so spacing and the gap at the ground matter. A digger needs wire buried along the base or a concrete strip under the fence line. A jumper needs height the town allows and no rails on its side to climb. Self-closing hinges keep a gate from being left open. Write each of these into the contract so the crew builds them.

  • Two households, one fence

When neighbors split the cost of a shared fence, write a contract for each household, with its own share and its own deposit. Under the FTC's rule, each buyer who signs at home must get the cancellation notice in duplicate, so two signatures mean two sets of forms, and either side can cancel. Agree up front what happens then: the other neighbor pays for the whole run, or the job waits. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 429.1, the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule.

  • Dark vinyl comes with conditions

Homeland Vinyl's 2024 best practices call for metal stiffeners in the bottom rails of medium colors and in every rail of dark ones. They warn against installing its vinyl on or beside concrete, asphalt or dark gravel, or near glass that reflects sun onto it, and advise against horizontal sections wider than six feet on center. The maker doesn't warranty bowed pickets or sagging rails. Read your maker's sheet before selling a dark fence along a driveway. Source: Homeland Vinyl: Best practices for fence installation (2024).

  • Corner lots keep a clear view

Some zoning codes keep a sight triangle clear where two streets meet. Greenville County, South Carolina, for example, measures 25 feet back from the corner along the front and side lot lines and bars anything in that triangle that blocks the view between two and a half and ten feet above the road's crown. A solid privacy fence can't run through it. Draw that triangle on any corner-lot layout before pricing, because the fix after a code complaint is tearing panels out. Source: Greenville County, South Carolina: Zoning Ordinance, Section 12:7.

  • Easements and swales on the plat

The plat or survey often shows utility and drainage easements along back and side lot lines. Ask the town what it allows in an easement and what happens if a utility needs to dig there later. Watch the ground too: a solid fence across a drainage swale can hold back water and flood the yard uphill, or the neighbor's. Mark both on the drawing so the homeowner signs knowing where the fence sits.

How much fence company sales representatives make

The closest BLS group for fence company sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for other specialty trade contractors earned a median of $31.09 an hour ($64,680 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 12,140 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for other specialty trade contractors.

Per the template, a base salary comes with commission on each closed deal, up to the rate it names. Set against BLS pay for service sales reps in the contractor category fence companies fall under, that base clears the bottom tenth but never reaches the median, so commission matters most. Say whether gates, tear-out and haul-away earn the same rate as the fence itself, since those are the lines a rep is tempted to give away to close.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Measures curving and sloped lot lines to the foot
  • Draws a layout with every gate, corner, end post and height marked
  • Shows how each fence material ages, using photos of older jobs
  • Spots easements, swales and corner sight lines on a plat or survey
  • Asks about pets, pools and neighbors before drawing anything
  • Fills out each buyer's contract and cancellation forms correctly at the table

Teach these on the job

  • Your fence lines, colors and each maker's install limits
  • Gate hardware: hinges, latches, drop rods and self-closers
  • Your measuring and quoting app
  • Fence permit and height rules in the towns you serve
  • How a signed job moves to the office and the crews

Bring a measuring wheel, a long tape, a level, marking flags, sample sections of each fence line and a color chart, plus a tablet running the drawing and quoting app. In spring a fence rep may run several estimates a day, so ask candidates how soon after a visit the homeowner gets a drawing and price.

Fence company sales representative interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Property lines

The homeowner isn't sure where the property line is and wants the fence where the old one stood. What do you say?

A strong answer: Explains the company doesn't decide property lines, recommends finding the pins or a survey, notes the customer's responsibility in the contract and suggests setting the fence slightly inside the line.

  2. Behavioral · Closing

Tell me about a sale you won against a lower bid, such as for a fence or similar outdoor project.

A strong answer: Explained differences in materials, posts and gates honestly, and the customer chose them on value.

Fence company sales representative KPIs

Compare reps who work a similar mix of yards, since corner lots, pool fences and long rural runs don't sell like a straight backyard fence. Trade the template's targets for figures from your own reps once they've logged a spring and a fall.

New Sales Agreements
Signed fence contracts with a deposit, counted once the cancellation window closes. A shared fence split between two neighbors counts as one agreement, not two.
Conversion Rate
Signed contracts over property inspections run, split by where the lead came from and by fence material. Leave out visits where the homeowner only wanted a repair price or lived outside your area.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey scores after install, for the jobs this rep sold. Read low scores for causes that start at the sale: a gate hung where the homeowner didn't want it, a height the town flagged, or a color unlike the sample.
Revenue Generation
Signed revenue per quarter, net of cancellations and change orders that cut footage. Show gates, tear-out and upgrades apart from the base run, to see what the rep adds at the table.

Fence company sales representative FAQ

Why does a fence rep job ask for stamina and a 50-pound lift?

Those lines ship word for word. On a fence rep's day they mean walking every run of a yard, sometimes through brush or along a creek bank, pushing a measuring wheel, kneeling to check grade at corners, carrying a sample panel and post from the truck, and driving to several appointments. Describe those tasks beside the template's lines, and tell applicants where to send an accommodation request.

How much does a fence company sales representative make?

Sales representatives of services who work for other specialty trade contractors earned a median of $31.09 an hour ($64,680 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $50,280 and $87,510 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Can a fence rep run the appointment in Spanish?

Yes, and the paperwork has to follow. When federal cooling-off rules cover a kitchen-table sale, the contract or receipt and the cancellation notice must be in the language the rep mainly spoke during the pitch. Keep reviewed Spanish versions of both on the tablet, and never hand a buyer English forms after a Spanish pitch.

How should a fence rep answer a lower quote?

Ask to see it and compare line by line, without running down the other company. Check footage and height, post size, spacing and material, how posts are set, picket thickness and rail count, gate hardware, tear-out and haul-away, and who pulls any permit. Sometimes the gap is something left out. If it really is the same fence for less, say so and let the sales manager decide.

What should a rep show a buyer choosing streaked woodgrain vinyl?

Several samples, or photos of a finished run. Homeland Vinyl says its variegated colors differ from piece to piece and between production runs, puts setting expectations on the installer, and suggests leaving extra pieces for repairs, since later replacements may not match. Write the color name and that warning into the contract.
