The buyer picks a look on the showroom floor, but the house decides what can go in and what it costs. A hearth rep sells the fire and the work behind it.
The quote covers the whole install
The buyer should see every line the fire depends on at this house: the vent kit or liner and how far it runs, chimney repairs from the sweep's report, any gas, propane or electrical work by others, the hearth pad or surround, finish work and the permit. Price each one. A total with nothing behind it invites a cheaper bid, and a missed line turns into an extra the buyer never agreed to.
A wood stove's label is part of the pitch
New wood and pellet stoves carry a permanent EPA label. It shows the month and year the unit was made, the model and serial number, its certified emission test value, and the test and standard it met, such as 2020 cord wood. Compare emission values only between models tested the same way. The label also says it's against federal rules to run the heater against its manual, and that manual warns off fuels like wet wood, treated wood and trash. Source: 40 CFR 60.536: Wood heater labels and owner's manuals (eCFR).
NFI certifies the hearth designer
The National Fireplace Institute offers a Hearth Design Specialist certification. It's aimed at the person a shopper usually meets first. It covers safety and technical facts for all three fuels, how to qualify a buyer, and how a sale moves through install and service. NFI says it assumes basic hearth knowledge. So it fits a rep with a season on the floor more than a new hire, and one who plans the install as well as sells it. Source: National Fireplace Institute: Hearth Design Specialist certification.
The showroom sets up the survey score
A buyer who watched a unit burn in a big showroom can be surprised at home. It may heat a small den too well, the blower hums, the flame looks different over another glass or log set, or the pellet hopper needs filling and the ash pan emptying. Talk through heat, noise, looks and upkeep before the order, using the manual's care steps. Those surprises are what drag down the post-install survey the template scores.
How much fireplace and stove sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for fireplace and stove sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for other building equipment contractors earned a median of $38.62 an hour ($80,340 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s above the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 4,000 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for other building equipment contractors.
A base salary, commission on closed sales and bonuses for beating monthly and quarterly targets, per the template. That base tops out near the bottom tenth of what BLS reports for sales reps of services at other building equipment contractors. Those BLS figures include commission, which carries this job, and much of it is earned in the fall.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Measures a fireplace opening, hearth and vent path, and reads a maker's clearance tables
Prices every line of an install, not just the unit on the floor
Explains in plain terms how each fuel heats, looks and needs care
Asks for the order on the showroom floor and at the kitchen table
Follows up on showroom sign-ins and web leads within a day, and logs each contact
Teach these on the job
Your brands, models and display units
NFI Hearth Design Specialist study
Reading EPA wood heater labels and maker spec sheets
Your quote software and price book
Local permit and gas work steps
On a home visit the rep needs a laser measure, the quote software and CRM on a tablet, the makers' spec sheets and install manuals, and a phone camera for the fireplace, hearth, roof line and gas meter. On the showroom floor, the burning displays and a sample board of glass media, logs, stone and surrounds do much of the explaining.
Fireplace and stove sales representative interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Steering away from an oversized unit
A customer wants the biggest wood stove you sell for a small, tight room. What do you tell them?
A strong answer: Explains that an oversized stove overheats the room or gets burned low and smoky, which builds creosote, and recommends a size that fits the space using the manufacturer's data.
Behavioral · Closing on value
Tell me about a sale you closed without discounting while an online or big-box store had the unit for less. What convinced the customer?
A strong answer: Showed value through fit, a proper install with permits and service after the sale, and answered concerns honestly.
Judge fall and summer months apart, since a packed September and a quiet June can make the same rep look very different.
Monthly Sales Revenue
Signed orders each month, with installed revenue beside them, since special orders can install weeks later. Split floor and in-home sales so a slow floor month doesn't hide behind home visits.
Conversion Rate
Estimates that turned into signed orders, as a share of all written estimates, per rep. Leave out estimates for units the company couldn't supply or install in time, and note the quotes that went to rehash.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey scores after install on this rep's orders, with comments sorted by what the rep controlled: the quote, the promised date, and how well the buyer understood heat output and upkeep.
Lead Response Time
Time from a new lead reaching the rep to the first real contact, from the CRM log, read by the hour each lead came in. Showroom visitors who left a number count as leads.
Career path
Rehash specialistCalls back stalled quotes and learns why hearth buyers wait.
Sales representativeMatches each buyer to a unit and prices everything the install needs.
Sales managerCoaches the reps and closes builder contracts.
Other roles in a fireplace & stove installation business
Can a hearth rep give a firm price on an insert before the chimney is inspected?
Price the unit and the install, and list the liner and any chimney repairs as open lines that depend on the inspection. Make the order final after the sweep's report is back, and reprice those lines from it. A buyer who signs one number and later hears a much bigger one tends to cancel.
How much does a fireplace and stove sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for other building equipment contractors earned a median of $38.62 an hour ($80,340 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $63,820 and $106,920 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
How much code knowledge does a hearth sales rep need?
Enough to spot what a job will need before it's quoted: a permit, a licensed gas fitter, an electrician for a blower outlet, or the floor protection the manual calls for. The rep reads the manual's clearance and vent tables with the buyer, and the lead installer confirms the plan at the site visit before install day.
What should a hearth rep ask before showing a single unit?
Whether the fire is for heat, looks or both, which room it's for, and who uses that room most. Whether there's a fireplace or chimney already, and what sits above the room, such as a second floor or an attic. When they hope to use it. Confirm the fuel the CSR logged on the ticket, too. Those answers rule out much of the floor before the tour starts.
What do the sales rep template's lifting and on-site lines mean?
Carrying a sample case of logs, glass media or stone, a surround panel or a box of brochures into a home or to a show booth, within the template's 25 pounds. On site it means walking the yard to see the roof line and where a vent could exit, using basement or attic stairs to trace a chimney or gas line, and kneeling to measure a fireplace opening. Name them in the ad.
