A garage door sales manager runs every way the company sells new doors and openers. That means reps in homes, the showroom, builder contracts, and techs who quote on repair calls. They hire and coach the reps, keep one price book, and check each order before it goes to the factory.

Each way of selling here has its own buyer, price list, and paperwork. The manager's job is to keep them from tripping over each other.
Builder bids are priced by the plan
Home builders buy doors one house plan at a time, often at prices set for a whole community. The manager bids each plan's door and opener package, prices the upgrades buyers can choose, and reprices when the contract renews. Before taking on a big community, they check with the install manager that crews can keep up without leaving homeowners waiting.
Technicians sell on repair calls
Service technicians see worn openers and tired doors every day. Some companies let them quote new ones on the spot. The manager sets what techs may sell, at what prices, and when a lead goes to a rep instead. In California, a service tech can skip the salesperson registration only if the call stays within the service the customer first asked for. Check your state's rules before techs sell. Source: California Business and Professions Code section 7152.
Showroom sales follow different rules
A buyer can usually cancel a sale made in their home, thanks to the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule. A sale that follows talks during the buyer's visit to a store with a fixed location, where the goods are on display, isn't covered. And when a tech sells a new opener on a repair call the customer asked for, the rule's repair exception doesn't cover that sale. Train reps and techs on which paperwork goes with which sale, and check your state's home sales law. Source: FTC Cooling-Off Rule definitions, 16 CFR 429.0 (Cornell Law School).
One price for reps and technicians
A homeowner may hear an opener price from a technician on Monday and a door-and-opener price from a rep on Friday. If the opener costs more in one quote than the other, trust drops. The manager keeps one price book for service and sales, sets the most each person can knock off, and checks a sample of tech and rep quotes against it each month.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
A record of selling doors, windows, or other home improvements face to face
Prices builder bids and retail jobs with margin in mind
Can read a month of quotes and see which jobs lost money
Sets clear selling rules and holds reps and techs to them
Settles order dates with the install manager before reps promise them
Teach these on the job
Your door makers' lines, options, and order process
Your price book, discount limits, and builder agreements
The quoting tool and CRM your reps already use
How you pay techs for leads and reps for sales
Permit and product rules in your service area
The work lives in the CRM or field service software that holds quotes, sold jobs, and technician leads, and in each door maker's dealer pricing and ordering system. Tell candidates whether the role covers builder accounts and a showroom, because both change the job.
Garage door sales manager interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Rework the template's targets to fit your market and your mix of retail and builder work. Post team results weekly, and take them to the general manager monthly.
Revenue Growth
Compare this quarter's sold revenue, after cancellations, with the quarter before and with that quarter last year. Report retail and builder sales apart, since one large community can hide a slow quarter in homes.
Lead Conversion Rate
Divide sold jobs by qualified leads, and break it out by ads, referrals, technician leads, showroom visits, and builder bids. Have the marketing manager sign off on what makes a lead qualified, so neither side can move it.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Sort review and survey scores by the rep or tech who sold each job, every month. An install date that slipped or a price that changed after the order usually began in the sale.
Sales Team Performance
Each month, list who on the team hit their personal target, including technicians with sales goals. Judge each person on a few months of results rather than one bad week.
Should a garage door sales manager also handle builder accounts?
It can work until builder volume is big enough for its own rep. Builders want quick bids, steady supply, and fast answers on punch lists, which is a different rhythm from selling to homeowners. If one person does both, put builder meetings on fixed days so coaching retail reps doesn't get squeezed out.
How much does a garage door sales manager make?
Sales managers who work for other building equipment contractors earned a median of $142,200 a year ($68.36 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $116,490 and $170,530 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
How do a garage door sales manager and an install manager split the work?
Sales owns the promise: what's sold, the price, and the date the customer was promised. Install owns delivery: crews, schedules, and how the door is hung. A short weekly meeting on the order list keeps reps from promising dates that the crews or the door makers can't meet.
Should garage door technicians get spiffs for selling?
Spiffs can work if the rules are clear and quotes stay honest. Pay on jobs that stay sold and install without complaint, not on the signature alone. Compare each tech's sales with their callbacks and reviews, and act fast on any sign of pressure. One story about a needless new door can cost more than every spiff you handed out that year.
How much technical knowledge does a garage door sales manager need?
The manager won't hang doors but should catch a bad quote before it's ordered. Watch for a door that won't fit the headroom, an opener too light for a heavy wood door, or springs that ignore added windows and insulation. DASMA, the door makers' association, notes that paint or parts added to a door can push its weight past what the maker specifies.
