A garage door sales representative visits homeowners, or meets them by video, to measure the garage and help them pick a new door and opener. The rep prices the job, closes the sale, and hands exact sizes and options to the office so the door that arrives from the factory fits the opening.

A new garage door is one of the biggest things people see on the front of a house, and it's built for one opening. The rep sells the look, but also owns the measurements, the opener match, and the paperwork for a sale made at home.
Measure the garage, not just the opening
A door has to fit the space behind the opening as well as the hole itself. Door maker Amarr's guide has you measure the opening's width and height, the side room on each side, the headroom above, and the backroom to the rear wall or first obstruction. It calls for more backroom when an opener goes on, so a short garage or a shelf along the back wall can change what you quote. Source: Amarr: How to measure for a new garage door.
Compare doors by tested U-factor
Garage door insulation gets reported two ways. DASMA, which writes standards for the door industry, says an R-value is calculated for one door section, while a U-factor comes from testing the whole installed door, joints and seals included. It says the two can't be compared. When a homeowner holds a competitor's quote, compare U-factor to U-factor, where lower means less heat moving through. Source: DASMA Technical Data Sheet #163: U-factor and R-value for garage doors.
Order the door after the cancel window
Most door sales closed in a customer's home are covered by the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule. The homeowner may back out until midnight, three business days later. The rep must explain the right to cancel out loud, print the cancel statement next to the signature line, and leave a completed cancellation notice in duplicate. Send the factory order after the deadline so you don't pay for a door nobody wants. Source: FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR 429.1 (Cornell Law School).
Match the opener to the door and the ceiling
A heavier door, such as solid wood or one with a row of windows, needs springs and an opener sized for it, so the rep checks both before reusing anything. A wall-mount opener frees up a crowded ceiling, but DASMA warns that on standard-lift or low-headroom track it needs extra steps to keep the cables tight, following the makers' instructions. Put the opener and track choice on the order, not in a note. Source: DASMA Technical Data Sheet #1501: Standard lift garage doors with jackshaft operation.
Leads you find yourself
The template expects reps to bring in some of their own leads. Good sources in this trade are neighbors who come over while a crew hangs a new door, past customers whose friends are selling a house, realtors prepping listings, and small builders or remodelers without a door supplier. Log each one in the CRM so they aren't counted with company leads.
How much garage door sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for garage door sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for other building equipment contractors earned a median of $38.62 an hour ($80,340 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s above the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 4,000 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for other building equipment contractors.
Salary plus commission on each closed job, as in the template. Decide whether openers and extras bundled with a door pay the full commission rate.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Measures carefully and double-checks before anything is ordered
Makes insulation ratings and track types easy to follow
Asks for the order once both owners have picked a door
Keeps appointment times across a wide territory
Builds referral contacts with realtors, remodelers, and small builders
Teach these on the job
Your door lines, options, and factory lead times
Opener drive types, accessories, and smart features
Measuring for headroom, side room, and backroom
Wind-rating and permit rules where you work
Quoting on your tablet, financing offers, and CRM steps
Reps carry a tape or laser measure and build quotes on a tablet or laptop, using your sales app and each door maker's dealer price list. List the door brands and opener lines in the ad, since a rep who has sold them before needs less training.
Garage door sales representative interview questions
They have their own page: 6 questions that test this job, what strong and weak answers sound like, and a work exercise to run with your finalists.
Replace the template's figures with targets built from your own reps' results after a full quarter. Read each rep against their own past months, not only against your top seller.
Monthly sales revenue
Total each rep's signed door and opener sales for the month, then take out anything canceled, whether during the cancel period or after. Track average job size beside it to see whether openers and upgrades are being offered.
Closing rate of at least 30%
Of the estimates a rep presented this month, how many became signed orders. Look at video and in-home estimates separately, since the template allows both and they may close differently.
Customer satisfaction rating above 4.8 stars
Collect the homeowner's rating after each install and file it under the rep who sold the job. Low marks often trace to a color sample that looked different in daylight or an opener nobody explained.
Minimum of 50 leads generated per quarter
Leads the rep sourced personally, from referrals, realtors, and small builders, tagged by source in the CRM. Keep them apart from leads the company paid for.

In California, a rep needs a registration. The state counts work on garages as home improvement, so a rep selling those jobs for a licensed contractor must hold a home improvement salesperson registration from the state's contractor board. Before selling, the rep must give the homeowner your business name and license number. Staff who just set appointments for a registered rep are exempt. Look up your own state's rules before a new hire goes out alone.
How much does a garage door sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for other building equipment contractors earned a median of $38.62 an hour ($80,340 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $63,820 and $106,920 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Is a garage door sales rep exempt from overtime?
It depends on where the selling happens. The federal exemption fits a rep whose main work is selling in customers' homes, week in and week out. Deals closed on the phone or online fall outside it, except where the call or email just supports an in-person visit. The DOL treats a rep's home office like your own office, so a rep who closes most jobs on video calls from home may not qualify. State rules can be stricter.
Can a garage door rep quote a new door by video?
For choosing a style and giving a rough price, yes. For ordering, be careful. A video call can miss a low beam, a water heater in the way, or a crooked jamb, and a made-to-order door that doesn't fit is costly to fix. A safer setup uses video for the first talk and sends someone to measure before the order goes in.
When should a rep quote a new opener with the door?
When the old opener is worn out, can't lift the new door, or fails its reversing test. Ask how the family uses the garage too. A quieter belt drive suits a garage under a bedroom, and a battery backup helps where the power goes out often. Don't add an opener only to raise the ticket; customers notice.
