What makes closet design different

Kitchen and interior designers plan whole rooms. A closet designer plans every foot of a small space, down to how many pairs of shoes it holds, and often sells the job at the same visit.

  • The drawing becomes the shop's cut list

In most closet companies, the design program turns the approved drawing into the parts the shop cuts. A wrong ceiling height, a missed baseboard or an outlet on the back wall turns into a wrong panel, not a quick fix on site. Good designers measure each wall twice, note anything in the way and photograph the space for the installer.

  • Every home sale comes with a cancel window

The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule lets a buyer who signs a closet order of 25 dollars or more at home cancel it, even if they asked the designer to come. They get three business days, through midnight of the last one. Saturdays count toward the three; Sundays and federal holidays are skipped. The designer must leave a cancellation notice in duplicate, and you refund within 10 business days of a cancel. Talks begun on the buyer's visit to your permanent showroom aren't covered. Don't cut until the window closes. Source: 16 CFR Part 429: Cooling-off period for sales made at homes or certain other locations (eCFR).

  • Some states regulate interior design

CIDQ, which runs the NCIDQ exam, counts 29 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico with laws on interior design. Title acts protect the use of professional titles. Practice acts limit who may do certain work, such as sending drawings in for permit review. Check your state's law before an ad calls the job interior designer. • The wardrobe sets the design

Customers rarely know how much they own. The designer counts long dresses, shirts, folded stacks, shoes and bins, then fits them to rods, shelves and drawers: long hang for coats, double hang for shirts, a hamper pull-out near the door. A closet that looks great but can't hold the clothes brings an unhappy call the week after install.

  • Video consults change the overtime question

The template mixes in-person and virtual consultations. That matters if you ever move designers to commission with no overtime. Under DOL Fact Sheet 17F, an exempt outside salesperson's main job is making sales, and they make them at customers' homes or businesses on a regular basis. Phone and internet sales count only as an add-on to visits in person. A designer's home office used as a base is treated like your own office, so video consults from home don't help. How much closet design consultants make

The closest BLS group for closet design consultants is interior designers. Interior designers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $29.25 an hour ($60,840 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $67,190 median for interior designers in all industries. About 810 of the 71,500 interior designers in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

In the template, designers earn an hourly wage, with bonuses tied to conversion rates and customer ratings. Some closet companies pay designers on commission instead. Before a switch to commission with no overtime, check the federal outside sales test on this page and your state's overtime law.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Measures a room exactly and notes every outlet, vent and baseboard
  • Draws clean plans in closet design software or CAD
  • Asks how a family really uses the space before drawing
  • Explains a price calmly and asks for the order
  • Writes orders the shop can cut from without a phone call

Teach these on the job

  • Your product lines, finishes and hardware
  • Your design program's catalog and pricing rules
  • Your cancellation forms and the three-day rule
  • Garage, pantry and wall bed layouts
  • Your handoff checklist for the shop and installers

Designers draw in closet design software or the CAD and SketchUp programs the template names, measure with a laser and tape, and show 3D views on a tablet with finish samples in hand. In the interview, ask each candidate to bring a closet they have drawn, in any program.

Closet design consultant interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Handling budget gaps

A client loves your design, but it's well over their budget. What do you do?

A strong answer: Asks what matters most, offers options such as fewer drawers, different finishes or phasing, and shows the price of each.

  2. Behavioral · Presenting designs

Tell me about a design presentation that won over a hesitant client. What did you do?

A strong answer: Showed a clear drawing or rendering, tied each feature to something the client said, handled the concern head on, and let them choose.

Closet design consultant KPIs

Pull these from your design program and CRM for the last few months before you set goals. Close rates swing with lead source, so a referral and a cold internet lead shouldn't count the same.

Client Conversion Rate
Signed orders divided by finished consultations, split by lead source and by in-home versus video. Count a sale only after the cancellation window has closed.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey or review scores on this designer's jobs, gathered after install, since most complaints about a closet show up when the clothes go back in.
Design Revision Rate
Drawings sent back for changes after the customer signs, with the reason for each. Keep changes of mind apart from measuring or drawing errors the shop or lead installer catches.
Project Turnaround Time
Business days from the consultation to the final drawing the customer approves, taken from CRM dates. Long gaps often mean a pile of unfinished drawings, not slow drawing.

Career path

Closet design consultant FAQ

Does a closet design consultant need a degree?

The template wants a degree in interior design, architecture or a related field, or equivalent experience. Most closet companies hire on the experience: someone who has drawn kitchens or closets, or a strong salesperson who learns the software. Test it with a sketch: give them a reach-in with the door off to one side and ask how they would lay it out.

How much does a closet design consultant make?

Interior designers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $29.25 an hour ($60,840 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $51,090 and $79,510 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Do closet designers need a license to sell?

Licensing is up to each state. In Maryland, selling a home improvement takes a salesperson or contractor license, and the law defines home improvement as altering or improving a home or part of one. The law doesn't name closets, but a built-in system the seller installs may fit. Wage workers who don't sell are left out. Ask your state's contractor or home improvement board how it treats closet work before designers sell on their own.

How is a design consultant different from a closet sales representative?

The two templates split the work. The sales representative earns a base plus commission and closes projects. The design consultant is paid hourly, measures and draws, and earns bonuses tied to closed designs. Plenty of closet companies combine the two in one job. If you hire both, decide who owns the price and who owns the drawing before a job goes to the shop.

Can a closet design consultant measure over video?

For a pantry or a simple reach-in, sometimes. Video misses walls out of plumb, a ceiling that dips under a duct and floors that slope toward the door. If you allow video measures, have the lead installer check the space in person before the shop cuts, and track how often those checks change the drawing.

What should a designer bring to a closet consultation?

A laser measure and tape, a level for floors and walls, finish and hardware samples, a tablet with the design program, and your cancellation forms. Photos of finished closets in homes like the customer's help them picture their own. Leave the drawing and the price in writing, even when the customer wants to think it over.
