What a closet sales rep does differently

Where a closet company splits the work, designers measure and draw while the rep brings buyers in and closes. The template also expects reps to find some of their own leads each month.

  • Selling a drawing someone else drew

When the design team draws the job, the rep still has to explain every choice: why the shoes sit at eye level, why the long-hang section is on that wall, what each finish adds to the price. Go over the drawing with the designer before the visit, and bring back every question the customer asks that the drawing can't answer. A rep who can't explain a shelf can't defend its price.

  • Order size follows what the room holds

The template measures revenue per sale, which rises with drawers, doors, lighting and accessories such as valet rods and jewelry trays. Sell them where the customer's things call for them: drawers for folded stacks, a tie rack for a real tie collection. Show finish levels side by side so the customer picks the price, and note on the order why each extra is there.

  • Trade partners want service, not ads

Builders, remodelers, interior designers and organizers can each send repeat work, and each wants something different. A builder wants the same closet in every home of one model, installed after paint and floors and before the buyer's walk-through. An interior designer wants samples and a drawing the client can approve. Visit partners on a set schedule, and log every referral to its source.

  • Give every showroom visitor a next step

A buyer who walks the showroom has already opened drawers and touched the finishes. The rep's job there is to book the in-home measure, or a design session, before they leave, with rough sizes and phone photos of the space. A visitor who leaves with only a brochure is easy to lose to the next showroom they visit.

  • Ask about the next room

A customer whose walk-in came out well often has a garage, pantry or office next on the list. Ask what's next at the final walk-through, or soon after, and set a date in the CRM. That's also the moment to ask for referrals, while the closet is new and the customer is showing it to friends.

How much custom closet sales representatives make

The closest BLS group for custom closet sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,910 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

Reps get a base salary in the template, with commission on each closed project. Commission is counted in BLS pay, and the BLS median for these reps at building finishing contractors tops the template's base, so a strong rep's pay grows through commission.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Has sold made-to-measure work at the kitchen table: closets, cabinetry, blinds or similar
  • Explains a closet drawing line by line and defends its price
  • Finds trade partners who send repeat work, and keeps them
  • Asks for the order, and sets a firm follow-up date when it isn't signed
  • Keeps every partner's referrals and open quotes current in the CRM

Teach these on the job

  • Each product line, from reach-ins to garage cabinets and wall beds
  • Reading your design program's drawings and price sheets
  • Finish levels, hardware and accessory options
  • Your builder and designer partner terms
  • Your cancel forms and how an order is released to the shop

Reps carry a tablet with the design program's 3D views and price sheets, a laser measure for rough sizes, and a sample case of finishes, hardware and a drawer front. Their week runs through the CRM: visits, open quotes and every partner referral.

Custom closet sales representative interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Consultative selling

At a consultation, the client says they just want something cheap to stop the mess. How do you guide the conversation?

A strong answer: Asks what bothers them most and how they use the space, shows options at different price points, and lets them choose without pressure.

  2. Behavioral · Closing

Tell me about a sale where the client hesitated and you still closed it without pressure.

A strong answer: Found the real concern, such as timing or budget, addressed it honestly, and the client chose to buy.

Custom closet sales representative KPIs

Read these by quarter. A single builder order or a run of showroom walk-ins can swing a rep's month, and a quarter evens that out.

Revenue per Sale
Average signed order, after cancellations, for each room type. A rising average is good news only if customers keep what they bought, so watch for requests to take drawers or lighting back off an order.
Conversion Rate
Of the qualified leads a rep presented a priced drawing to, the share that signed. Keep showroom, in-home and trade-partner leads on separate lines.
Customer Satisfaction
Survey scores after install on the rep's orders. Sort the comments: remarks about the design or what was promised at the sale belong to the rep, and remarks about the install belong to the crew.
Leads Generated
Leads the rep found without company ad spend, each credited to its builder, designer, organizer, showroom or referral source. Count one once a design visit is on the calendar.

Custom closet sales representative FAQ

Does a closet sales rep need to know the design software?

Enough to open a drawing, turn the 3D view, swap a finish and read the price sheet in front of a customer. Changes to sizes, parts or layout go back to the designer, since the shop cuts from that file. A rep who learns the program well can move into design later, which gives your best reps somewhere to grow.

How much does a custom closet sales representative make?

Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $48,330 and $89,990 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Can a furniture or kitchen showroom seller move into closet sales?

Many can. They already talk finishes, read floor plans and close in person. What's new is the visit to the home, calls on partners and finding leads on their own, which the template counts each month. When you interview them, ask how they stayed in touch with past buyers, then hand them a closet drawing and play the customer.

How should a closet rep ad handle the template's lines on samples and site visits?

Name the tasks behind them: carrying a sample case and display pieces up to the template's 25 pounds, walking homes during a consultation, and looking over garages and storage rooms that may be cold, hot or dusty. Use those tasks in your posting instead of the template's wording about ability, and offer reasonable accommodation.

Should a closet rep quote a price on the first visit?

A range, yes; a firm price, only from a finished drawing. Closet prices depend on drawers, doors, finish and accessories, so a number given before the drawing is done tends to move. Give a range for similar spaces you've done, explain what pushes it up or down, and book the time to present the real drawing and price.
