What changes for a warehouse manager in hardscaping

A hardscape yard holds tons of stone, machines that run all day in grit, and the fuel to run them. Safe storage and ready equipment are most of the job.

  • Block stacks have height rules

OSHA's construction rule on storing materials requires tiered stock to be stacked, racked, blocked or otherwise secured so it can't slide, fall or collapse. Brick stacks can't go over 7 feet, and a loose stack tapers back above 4 feet. Masonry block stacked higher than 6 feet must taper back half a block per tier. Use the same limits in your own yard. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.250, storage of materials.

  • Strap pallets by weight

FMCSA's cargo securement rule for commercial vehicles says the tiedowns on a load must have a combined working load limit of at least half the weight of what they hold. A trailer of wall block needs straps rated for that load, not whatever is in the truck box. Keep straps sorted by rating and pull worn ones. Source: eCFR: 49 CFR 393.106, securing articles of cargo.

  • Sealer counts with the fuel

Gas for saws and compactors is a flammable liquid, and many solvent-based paver sealers are too, so check each safety data sheet. On job sites, OSHA's construction rule calls for approved safety cans or DOT containers when handling 5 gallons or less. Outside an approved cabinet, a room may hold 25 gallons of flammable liquids at most. A few pails of sealer next to the gas cans can pass that fast. Ask your safety advisor which rules cover your shop. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.152, flammable liquids.

  • Machine hours set the service

Plate compactors, wet saws, skid steers and mini excavators work in grit all day, and dust wears filters, belts and blades faster than the calendar suggests. Track hours on each machine, service it on the maker's schedule, and tag anything that comes back damaged so it doesn't go out again until it's fixed.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Safe forklift and loader operation, and the judgment to stop an unsafe load
  • Keeps stock records and machine logs current
  • Plans the next day's loads from the job schedule
  • Basic mechanical skill with small engines and hydraulics
  • Leads yard staff and sets clear rules

Teach these on the job

  • Your products, suppliers and pallet handling
  • Your inventory and maintenance software
  • The service schedules for your machines
  • Your strap, stacking and fuel storage rules

The yard runs on a forklift or a fork attachment on the skid steer, pallet jacks, and the trucks and trailers that haul to jobs. Keep machine hours, service and stock in inventory or maintenance software, even if it starts as a shared spreadsheet.

Hardscaping warehouse manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Forklift training

A new hire wants to run the forklift but hasn't been trained. What do you do?

A strong answer: Doesn't let them until they're trained and evaluated as OSHA's forklift rules require.

  2. Behavioral · Faster loading

Tell me about a time crews were losing time loading out in the morning. What did you change?

A strong answer: Staged materials and tools by crew the day before, organized the yard and checked trailers, and load-out time dropped.

Hardscaping warehouse manager FAQ

Should a hardscaping company fix compactors and saws in-house?

Routine work such as oil, filters, belts, blades and pads usually makes sense in-house if someone on the yard staff knows small engines. Send engine rebuilds, hydraulic repairs and warranty work to the dealer. Keep a spare compactor and saw so a breakdown doesn't stop a crew while a machine is in the shop.

How much does a hardscaping warehouse manager make?

Transportation, storage, and distribution managers who work for landscaping companies earned a median of $78,670 a year ($37.82 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $67,580 and $127,640 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

What should a warehouse manager track for each machine?

Hours, service dates and what was done, parts used, damage reports, and which crew had it last. That history shows when repairs on a machine have outrun its value, and which crews are hard on equipment. Keep it on the machine's record in your software so anyone can look it up.

How should a hardscape yard be laid out?

Keep heavy stock near where trucks load, with clear lanes for the forklift. Stage each job's pallets together the day before it starts. Put fuel and sealers in their own storage away from the shop's work area, and keep blades, pads and small parts behind a locked door. Mark a spot for returned pallets so they're counted before they go back on the shelf.

What hands-on work comes with a hardscaping warehouse manager job?

The template's lines mean lifting bagged sand, blades and parts, standing and walking the yard most of the day, bending to check pallets and machines, and working outdoors in the yard through every season. The confined-spaces line covers tight spots, such as between racks or inside a trailer. Spell out those tasks in the ad.
