What makes marketing different in hardscaping

A patio or wall is a large purchase that a homeowner may think about for months before calling. The marketing manager sells the design visit, follows the rules for home improvement ads, and shows which spending turned into built projects.

  • Every ad carries the license number

Maryland's Home Improvement Commission says each home improvement advertisement must contain the contractor's name and license number, and that ads can't be deceptive, false or misleading. A coupon in an ad may not require the homeowner to present it before the contractor gives an estimate or proposal. For a hardscaping company licensed there, build the name and number into every template, from yard signs and truck wraps to search ads and social posts. • Write promotions as price cuts

The same Maryland rules ban offering an owner a gift, bonus award, merchandise, trading stamps or a cash loan to win a home improvement contract. The commission doesn't count a sale or price reduction as a gift or bonus award. So write a spring offer as money off the project rather than a free item. If an advertised price leaves out delivery or installation, the ad must disclose that conspicuously. Source: Maryland Home Improvement Commission: Advertising requirements.

  • Rebates can help sell permeable pavers

Some local stormwater programs pay homeowners back for permeable pavement. In Prince George's County, Maryland, the Rain Check Rebate lists permeable pavement and pavement removal among its eligible practices. The Chesapeake Bay Trust page for the program says these projects must be pre-approved and get a site visit before installation, and work can't begin until the pre-approval comes through. An ad that mentions the rebate should tell buyers to get approval before the dig. Source: Chesapeake Bay Trust: Prince George's County Rain Check Rebate.

  • Label a design as a design

Designers often sell from 3D drawings, and those images look good in an ad. Show them as designs, not finished jobs, and pair them with photos of patios and walls your crews built. A buyer who signs because of a perfect drawing and then sees a different shade of stone on the pallet may feel misled, and that complaint lands on sales and the crew.

  • Count leads by project, not by form

A question about a small fire pit and a request for a full outdoor kitchen both show up as a single lead, yet one is worth far more than the other. Tag every lead by project type and town in the CRM, and report the cost per design visit and per signed job for each type. That shows which ads bring the work your crews are set up to build.

How much hardscaping marketing managers make

Marketing managers who work for administrative and support services businesses earned a median of $149,990 a year ($72.11 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $166,790 median for marketing managers in all industries. About 17,840 of the 395,240 marketing managers in that survey work for administrative and support services businesses.

Pay is often a salary plus a bonus linked to leads and campaign results. This template's range is lower than the BLS figures shown, which cover marketing managers at all administrative and support service companies, not just hardscaping.

BLS counts too few marketing managers at landscaping companies for a steady figure, so these figures cover administrative and support services businesses. Post a real range for your market in the ad.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Runs search, social and local service ads and judges them by signed jobs in the CRM
  • Writes plain ad copy for homeowners planning a patio, wall or outdoor kitchen
  • Knows the home improvement advertising rules where your crews build
  • Has a good eye for stone color, layout and scale in photos and drawings
  • Manages agencies, printers and photographers to a budget and a deadline

Teach these on the job

  • Your paver, wall block and natural stone lines
  • How designers run a design visit and price a job
  • Planning and staffing home and garden show booths
  • Your CRM's lead source fields and reports
  • Local stormwater rebate programs and their steps

Expect a CRM that follows each lead from first contact to signed contract, ad accounts for search, social and local service listings, a website builder, and photo and video editing apps. If your designers draw in 3D, ask candidates how they have turned design files into ads.

Hardscaping marketing manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Attracting bigger projects

Leads are mostly small repair jobs, and we want large outdoor living projects. What do you change?

A strong answer: Changes messaging and targeting, sets a minimum project size, promotes financing if offered and builds landing pages for outdoor living.

  2. Behavioral · High-value campaigns

Tell me about a campaign that brought in large outdoor living or design-build projects.

A strong answer: Names the channel and message, how leads were tracked to signed projects and the average project size.

Hardscaping marketing manager KPIs

The template's targets are sample numbers. Set your own from last year's leads, design visits and signed jobs, season by season.

Lead Generation
Count new, unique inquiries in the CRM each month, by source and project type. Leave out repeat contacts, job seekers and vendor calls so the count reflects real buyers.
Campaign Conversion Rate
Divide booked design visits, then signed contracts, by the leads each campaign brought. Hardscape sales take weeks, so check the result again a few months after a campaign ends.
Brand Engagement
Track comments, shares, saves and messages from each social account's built-in reports. Compare the same months year over year, since interest in outdoor projects peaks and dips by season.
Return on Advertising Spend (ROAS)
Add up the signed contract value traced to each ad channel and divide it by what that channel cost. Use contract values from the CRM, not the ad platform's own estimate.

Career path

  1. Sales coordinator or marketing assistantBooks design visits, posts content and learns where leads come from.
  2. Marketing managerRuns the plan, the budget and outside vendors.
  3. Director of sales and marketingLeads both teams and sets yearly growth targets with the CEO.
  4. General managerAnswers for profit across sales, crews and the office.

Hardscaping marketing manager FAQ

Can our ads use the paver maker's photos and logo?

Ask your supplier or the maker's rep for their written terms first. Makers decide how their name, logo and catalog photos may appear, and the terms may limit use to approved installers. When you do run a catalog photo, make clear it shows the product, not a job your crew built. If the maker lists your company on its website, give those leads their own source tag in the CRM.

How much does a hardscaping marketing manager make?

Marketing managers who work for administrative and support services businesses earned a median of $149,990 a year ($72.11 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $110,340 and $194,620 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Do yard signs work on hardscaping jobs?

They can, because neighbors watch a patio or wall go in over several days. Ask for the owner's permission in the contract, check HOA and town sign rules, and pick the sign up when the crew leaves. Maryland requires the contractor's name and license number on each home improvement ad, so put both on signs there. Give each sign its own short web address or phone number so you can count the calls it brings.

Should a hardscaping marketing manager have a design background?

It helps, but it isn't required. Someone who understands layout, color and scale can spot a weak photo, pick the drawings that sell, and brief a photographer clearly. What matters more is whether they can tie spending to signed jobs. If your best candidate is strong on numbers but light on design, have them choose each season's images with your lead designer.

Should a hardscaping company market to its past customers?

Yes. A homeowner who got a patio may come back for a seat wall, steps, lighting or a fire feature a few years later, and they know the neighbors. Send a short note when the project turns one, ask how it's holding up, and show add-ons that fit what they already have. Keep past customers in the CRM so sales can see who has bought before.

What physical tasks does this marketing job include?

The template's physical lines describe a few tasks. The marketing manager drives to home shows, community events and client sites, carries boxes of brochures, banners and display pieces up to the stated weight, sets up a booth, and walks finished yards outdoors to plan photo shoots. Otherwise the job sits at a computer with campaign reports. List these tasks for each finalist and ask if they can perform them, with or without an accommodation.
