What makes a janitorial helper's job different

A helper on a house cleaning team works in one home at a time. On a commercial crew, the helper keeps several cleaners supplied across whole floors, in buildings where the client's rules on trash, keys and noise come first.

  • Night shifts rule out younger teens

Federal child labor rules let 14- and 15-year-olds do clean-up work, including vacuums and floor waxers. But their hours must fall from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., stretched to 9 p.m. in summer, June 1 to Labor Day. On a school day the cap is three hours, and 18 hours in a school week. During the school year, a crew that starts at six can't keep a 15-year-old past seven. Source: 29 CFR 570.35: Hours and times 14- and 15-year-olds may work (Cornell LII).

  • No one under 18 runs the compactor

Offices and stores often send trash to a compactor or baler at the dock. Under federal rules, no one younger than 18 may run or help run a compactor or baler, or clean or fix one. A narrow exception lets 16- and 17-year-olds load certain paper balers and paper box compactors, never run or unload them, and only when the machine meets the listed safety conditions. Source: 29 CFR 570.63: Balers and compactors, Hazardous Occupations Order 12 (Cornell LII).

  • Refilled bottles need labels

Helpers often fill spray bottles from concentrate at the dilution station. OSHA's hazard rule lets a worker skip the label only on a container meant for their own immediate use. A bottle that goes on someone else's cart needs the product name and hazard information on it. Labels must be in English, and you may add a second language. Source: OSHA: Hazard communication standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).

  • Every building keeps its own closet

Supplies for each account usually sit in a closet at the client's building, not in a company truck. The helper learns each closet, counts what's left before the crew goes home, and writes down what is running short. That way the lead can order before a restroom runs out of paper.

How much janitorial helpers make

The closest BLS group for janitorial helpers is janitors and cleaners. Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $36,840 median for janitors and cleaners in all industries. About 829,300 of the 2,209,760 janitors and cleaners in that survey work for building services companies.

BLS doesn't track cleaning helpers on their own; it counts them with janitors and cleaners, which is the pay shown here. The template's range for a helper starts below that median. Hourly, with overtime when a heavy week calls for it.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Shows up on time for every shift, nights included
  • Follows a set order of tasks and asks when unsure
  • Notices empty dispensers and low supplies and says so
  • Leaves clients' desks, papers and belongings alone
  • Keeps up with the crew and does what the lead asks

Teach these on the job

  • Each building's route and supply closet
  • Mixing concentrates and labeling bottles
  • Vacuums, mops and wringers first, floor machines later
  • Sorting trash and recycling to each client's rules
  • Your time clock app and shift report

A helper works from a janitor cart with liners, paper refills, spray bottles and microfiber cloths, plus a backpack or upright vacuum and a mop bucket. Some crews fill bottles from a wall-mounted dispenser that dilutes concentrate automatically. Tell applicants whether helpers drive to buildings or ride with the crew.

Janitorial helper interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Wet-floor safety

Your lead asks you to mop a hallway near the main entrance while people are still leaving the building. How do you do it?

A strong answer: Puts out wet floor signs first, mops one side at a time to leave a dry path, watches for people, and picks up signs only when the floor is dry.

  2. Behavioral · Fixing your own mistakes

Tell me about a time at work, school or volunteering when you finished a task and found out you'd done it wrong. What did you do?

A strong answer: Owned it, fixed it, and asked how to do it right next time.

Janitorial helper KPIs

Compare each new helper with how your past helpers did at the same point, and expect more as they learn each building.

On-time task completion rate
Tasks the lead assigned, done before the crew locks up, as marked in the shift report. Look at the pattern over several weeks, not one rough night.
Supply restock accuracy
Spot checks of dispensers, carts and closets against each building's restock list after the helper's shift. Note any empty dispenser the client found before your crew did.
Safety protocol adherence
Lead observations of labels, gloves, wet floor signs and safe lifting during the shift, logged as yes or no. Count a reported hazard or near miss as a plus, never a strike.
Internal quality inspection score
Scores from supervisor or client walk-throughs on the areas the helper cleaned, on the same checklist the full cleaners use. Expect scores to climb as the helper takes on more areas.

Career path

  1. Janitorial helperSupports the crew and learns each building.

Janitorial helper FAQ

What does a janitorial helper do?

They keep the crew supplied and moving. They restock carts and restroom dispensers, pull trash and recycling to the dock, vacuum open areas and wipe surfaces the lead assigns. Before the crew leaves they put the gear away, note low supplies and help the crew lock up.

How much does a janitorial helper make?

Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $30,590 and $38,520 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Can a teenager work as a janitorial helper?

Yes, with limits. The hour rules above apply to 14- and 15-year-olds. At 16 the federal hour limits end, though many states keep their own, and when both apply you follow the stricter one. Jobs the Labor Department lists as hazardous, like running the compactor, stay off-limits until 18.

How is a janitorial helper different from a janitor?

Mostly it's about trust and keys. A janitor gets their own floors and may hold keys and alarm codes. A helper works beside someone who holds them, takes simpler tasks and has their areas checked. For some companies, helper is just a janitor's first few weeks; for others it's a lasting role. Tell applicants which.

What should a janitorial helper job ad include?

The start time and which buildings, whether helpers need their own ride between sites, the training plan, and how a helper moves up to janitor. Describe the work as tasks: pushing a loaded cart, lifting trash bags up to the template's 25 pounds, and bending to restock dispensers.
