What makes a house cleaning helper's job different

In the building trades, a helper fetches materials while a skilled worker does the hard part. In house cleaning, a helper does real cleaning from the first morning, in homes where the customer judges every room the team touches.

  • Load-out and wash-up are part of the shift

The template has helpers pull supplies at the start of the day and restock at the end. Federal rules count work that's an integral part of the main job as part of the workday. One example in the rule is a worker who comes in early to hand out materials and get machines ready for coworkers. Loading kits, emptying vacuums and washing cloths is the helper's version, so the clock runs from first bin to last cloth. Source: 29 CFR 785.24: Principal activities (Cornell LII).

  • Shadow days are paid days

A new helper often spends the first days watching and copying a lead. Under federal rules, training is work time unless it is outside normal hours, truly voluntary, not directly related to the job, and free of any productive work. Shadowing a team on real cleans fails every one of those tests, so every hour of it is paid. Source: 29 CFR 785.27: Lectures, meetings and training programs (Cornell LII).

  • Trash follows each home's rules

Taking out the trash sounds simple until it's someone else's house. One customer wants bags at the curb, another wants them in the garage bin, and what goes in recycling changes from town to town. The helper follows the home's notes, asks the lead when the notes don't say, and makes sure the office adds the answer for next time.

  • Easy rooms first, then the hard ones

A common order is dusting, vacuuming, making beds and emptying trash, then kitchens and bathrooms once the helper knows the products. Deep and move-out jobs, with ovens, fridges and cabinet insides, come last. A written list of the tasks each helper has been signed off on keeps the lead from guessing what to hand them in the next house.

  • Equipment care, not home repairs

The template's maintenance duties fit the team's gear better than the customer's house: changing vacuum bags, filters and belts, and flagging a vacuum that's losing suction before it dies mid-route. If a helper spots a leak or a loose railing in a home, they tell the lead, who tells the office and the customer. Fixing it is a job for the homeowner's own repair pro.

How much house cleaning helpers make

The closest BLS group for house cleaning helpers is maids and housekeeping cleaners. Maids and housekeeping cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.13 an hour ($35,630 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $35,510 median for maids and housekeeping cleaners in all industries. About 92,440 of the 860,670 maids and housekeeping cleaners in that survey work for building services companies.

BLS counts trainees with the workers they're training to become and has no helper group for house cleaning, so these figures are for maids and housekeeping cleaners. Expect a helper's starting rate to sit below that median; the template's range starts a little under the housekeeper's. Plan on an hourly rate with overtime, and a raise once a helper can clean a home to the checklist alone.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Arrives on time for the morning load-out
  • Follows a checklist step by step and asks when unsure
  • Treats customers' homes and belongings with care
  • Takes direction from a lead and pitches in on a small team
  • Notices when supplies run low and says so

Teach these on the job

  • Your checklist for each room and clean type
  • Which products are safe on which surfaces
  • Diluting concentrates and handling chemicals safely
  • Vacuum and equipment upkeep
  • Your clock-in and scheduling app

Helpers handle the team's whole kit: vacuums, microfiber cloths and mops, buckets, scrub brushes, step stools and bottled cleaners, plus the supply bins and trash bags at the branch. The ad should tell applicants whether helpers ride with the team in a company car or need a driver's license of their own.

House cleaning helper KPIs

Judge a helper against what earlier helpers managed in their first months, and expect each number to improve as they take on more rooms.

Task Completion Rate
Tasks the lead assigns in each home, done within the time set for them. The lead marks them in a short daily log or the scheduling app, and you look over the log weekly.
Inventory Accuracy
End-of-day kit checks: does each car hold the supplies on its list, and do supply room counts match what was signed out? Spot-check a few kits each week.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ratings customers give the homes this helper's team cleaned. The score belongs to the whole team, so read the comments for the rooms and tasks the helper owned.
Safety Compliance
Injuries, chemical splashes and near misses involving the helper, counted quarterly from the reports your branch keeps. Treat a helper who reports a hazard as doing the job right, never as a mark against them.

House cleaning helper FAQ

What does a house cleaning helper do?

A typical day starts at the branch loading the car, then moves through two or more homes with a team. In each one the helper takes the rooms or tasks the lead assigns, carries supplies in and out, and handles trash and recycling. Back at the branch, they unload, wash cloths and refill bottles for the next day.

How much does a house cleaning helper make?

Maids and housekeeping cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.13 an hour ($35,630 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $31,740 and $39,810 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Is a cleaning helper the same as a housekeeper?

A housekeeper is trusted to clean a home to the checklist without someone checking each room. A helper is still learning, so the lead checks their rooms and gives them simpler tasks. Some companies treat helper as the first weeks of the housekeeper job. Others keep a separate helper role for people who like support work. Pick one and tell applicants which it is.

Does a cleaning helper need experience?

A year in a similar role is on the template's list, but this is the job where you can start someone with none. If your leads have time to train, drop that line and hire for reliability and care. Ask about any work where they followed a routine and took pride in the result, paid or unpaid, at home or on a job.

How soon can a helper clean on their own?

It depends on the person and your checklist, not a set number of days. Use a sign-off list of each room type and clean type a lead has watched them do right. When the list is full and inspection scores hold up, move them to housekeeper with the raise that comes with it. Explaining this at hiring gives good helpers a reason to stay.

What should a house cleaning helper job ad include?

Where and when the day starts, what they'll learn first, and who they'll work beside. Say how the move to housekeeper works. Describe the physical side of the job as tasks, such as vacuuming stairs, carrying supply bins and kneeling to scrub tubs, rather than as traits a person must have.
