What makes window cleaning sales different

Quoting and closing are the job in any sales role. On a house, the window quote stands or falls on counting the glass right and seeing what's stuck to it.

  • Every pane and every story counts

On the walk-around the rep counts every window and pane, marks the slow ones like small divided panes and skylights, and checks the height on each side of the house. A three-story back wall can need a long ladder or a water-fed pole, and the price has to show it. Undercount, and the crew cleans the difference for free.

  • Read the glass before pricing it

Paint, stickers, stucco and hard water spots all add time, and scraping carries risk. Glass maker Trulite says tempering can leave tiny glass fragments on the surface, and that razor blades and metal scrapers can knock them loose and scratch the glass. Write any scraping work, and how a scratch would be handled, into the estimate. Source: Trulite KnowledgeBase: Heat treated surfaces and scratches.

  • Each service has its own measure

Windows price by count and height. Gutters price by the length of the run, the number of stories and whether guards are in the way. Pressure washing prices by area and surface: a concrete driveway, a wood deck and vinyl siding each take a different method. A rep who quotes all three on one visit saves a second trip.

  • A porch sale can be undone

A plan signed on the porch on a Thursday can be cancelled until midnight the next Monday, barring a federal holiday. Most sales closed at the buyer's home, even by invitation, carry a three-business-day right to cancel under the Cooling-Off Rule the FTC enforces, and Sundays don't count. At signing, the rep hands the buyer their copy of the contract, showing the sale date, plus two completed cancellation notices, and explains the right out loud. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR Part 429, Cooling-Off Rule for door-to-door sales.

  • Sell the street you already clean

A house two doors from a regular customer costs less to serve, because the crew barely drives. Reps who work streets near booked jobs, and ask happy customers to mention you to neighbors, build tighter routes and easier sales. A yard sign out front while the crew works starts the conversation for them.

Residential vs. commercial window cleaning sales

Both reps quote glass and close the deal. What they measure, and what the customer wants to see, is different.

How much window cleaning sales representatives make

The closest BLS group for window cleaning sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $29.31 an hour ($60,970 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 40,700 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building services companies.

Base salary and commission, both in the template. Paying commission across a recurring plan's first year, not only its first visit, rewards the sales that keep crews busy.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Ease talking with homeowners at the door and at the kitchen table
  • Careful counting and measuring on every walk-around
  • Reading a house fast: heights, glass types, access and what's stuck to the glass
  • Explaining what's in a price and what's extra, so cleaning day holds no surprises
  • Updating the CRM after each visit, not on Friday afternoon

Teach these on the job

  • How you charge for panes, upper stories and add-ons
  • Naming window styles right on the quote: double-hung, casement, slider, storm
  • Pricing pressure washing by area and surface
  • Your quoting app, contract and cancellation forms
  • How to present recurring plans

Most visits need only the quoting app on the rep's phone (ResponsiBid, Jobber, Housecall Pro or similar), and satellite and street-level map images let a rep pre-count a house before driving out. Keep a laser measure in the car for driveways and gutter runs.

Window cleaning sales representative KPIs

Base each goal on your own seasonal close rates and job sizes, and revisit them after spring.

New Sales Closed
Count jobs the rep sold each month that made it onto the crew schedule, with recurring plans and one-time cleans in separate columns.
Revenue per Sale
What the rep's completed jobs were invoiced for, averaged per job. Compare quoted with invoiced amounts too; a wide gap usually means counts or add-ons were missed on the walk-around.
Client Satisfaction Rating
Survey the rep's customers after the first clean. If a crew had to change the price or skip a service on site, review that estimate with the rep.
Lead Conversion Rate
Signed estimates over estimates given each month. Keep remote quotes apart from in-home visits, since a photo quote and a walk-around close at different rates.

Window cleaning sales representative FAQ

Can a window cleaning sales rep quote without visiting the house?

For a simple one- or two-story home, often yes, from satellite and street images and the homeowner's answers. Go in person when the house has three stories, many divided panes, construction debris or hard water, or when the customer wants inside cleaning too; photos hide exactly the things that change the price.

How much does a window cleaning sales representative make?

Sales representatives of services who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $29.31 an hour ($60,970 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $45,780 and $78,150 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Does a window cleaning sales rep climb ladders?

Not as a rule. The template describes walking and standing during property tours, working outdoors in changing weather and lifting up to 25 pounds, but not ladder work. Reps judge heights and access from the ground and leave the climbing to the crew. If your reps also do test cleans or touch-ups, say so in the job ad.

Should reps price by the window or by the pane?

Either works if the whole team uses the same rule. Per-window prices are easier for homeowners to follow. Per-pane prices are fairer on houses full of divided panes. Whichever you pick, price upper stories, screens, tracks and hard water as separate lines so customers see what they're buying.

What are the best leads for a window cleaning sales rep?

Referrals from current customers and neighbors of homes the crew is cleaning tend to close fastest, because the homeowner has seen the work. Lapsed customers come next. Web quote requests with photos attached are worth a fast call, since the homeowner has already done half the estimate.

How should a rep present a recurring plan?

After the walk-around, when the homeowner has the one-time price in hand. Show what a year looks like: spring and fall window cleans, gutters before winter, a pressure wash in summer. Let the customer pick the visits they want instead of pushing the biggest package.
