An appliance warehouse is mostly small boxes with long part numbers. Some belong to one waiting customer, some go back to a distributor by a deadline, and a few hold gas under pressure.
Lay out the room by how parts leave
Put the parts techs use most near the door the vans load from, grouped by brand and part type. Washer tubs, dryer drums and other big boxes go on low racks near receiving. Customer special orders and anything going back to a seller each get a zone of their own, away from stock. When every part has one home, a new hire can find it and counts stop drifting.
The van restock is a daily shift
Techs come back with empty bins and a list of what they used. The manager sets when restocking happens, who pulls the parts, and how each one is logged against its ticket, so every van is full before the next morning. A van that keeps coming back short gets its bins checked against its list the next day, before the tech leaves.
Distributor accounts run through the warehouse
Parts arrive from several suppliers, from regional distributors to the brands' own parts desks, each with its own order cutoff, delivery days, will-call counter and return rules. The manager keeps each account working day to day: who on staff may order on it, which brands go to which distributor, and that every return and core leaves with its paperwork before the window closes.
Refrigerant cylinders follow OSHA's gas rules
OSHA's compressed gas rule makes the employer check each cylinder it controls, as far as a visual inspection can tell, to see that it's in safe condition. Storage and handling follow the gas group pamphlet the rule names, CGA P-1-1965. Give recovered refrigerant its own shelf and tag each cylinder. Under EPA's rules, used refrigerant generally can't be sold for use until a certified reclaimer has cleaned it. So recovered cylinders wait there until they ship out. Source: 29 CFR 1910.101: Compressed gases, general requirements (eCFR).
Cylinders on the van ride as materials of trade
DOT lets a business carry hazardous materials it uses in its own work under lighter rules, called materials of trade. A refrigerant cylinder can ride that way at up to 220 pounds gross. All materials of trade on one vehicle can't pass 440 pounds. Each cylinder must still meet DOT's cylinder rules and be secured against shifting and damage. The driver must be told what's on board. The warehouse sets how cylinders go into each van. Source: 49 CFR 173.6: Materials of trade exceptions (eCFR, amended August 4, 2026).
How much appliance repair warehouse managers make
The closest BLS group for appliance repair warehouse managers is transportation, storage, and distribution managers. Transportation, storage, and distribution managers who work for repair and maintenance businesses earned a median of $81,230 a year ($39.05 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $107,230 median for transportation, storage, and distribution managers in all industries. About 1,030 of the 221,180 transportation, storage, and distribution managers in that survey work for repair and maintenance businesses.
The template offers a salary and performance bonuses. The pay it lists sits at the bottom of BLS pay for this job at repair and maintenance businesses, which fits a hands-on parts room lead better than a manager of a large building.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Has run a parts room or stockroom with thousands of small part numbers
Sets up shelves, labels and bins a new hire can follow on day one
Gets every van restocked before the next morning, even when short-staffed
Keeps several distributor accounts and their return and core terms straight
Stores, checks and loads gas cylinders by the rules
Teach these on the job
Appliance parts by brand and type
Your job software's parts, transfer and van screens
Each distributor's cutoffs, will-call hours and return steps
OSHA and DOT basics for refrigerant cylinders
Which brands want failed warranty parts sent back, and how
Expect the inventory and van transfer screens of your job software, online ordering accounts with each supplier, a label printer, scanners, and a cart or hand truck for heavy boxes. Candidates from an appliance parts distributor's warehouse will know most of it already.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Finding lost special orders
A technician arrives for a return visit, but the special-order part can't be found. What do you do?
A strong answer: Searches by job, checks receiving logs and other trucks, reorders fast, tells dispatch and the customer, and labels special orders by job at receiving.
Behavioral · Warehouse safety
Tell me about a hazard you fixed in a warehouse where people move washers, refrigerators and other heavy appliances.
A strong answer: Names the hazard, such as blocked aisles or unsafe lifting, the fix and how they kept it fixed.
Set targets after one full count of the room and every van, then review them each month.
Inventory Accuracy
Cycle counts of shelves, vans and the special-order shelf held against the system. Count a special-order part that can't be found as a miss, even when its value is small.
Order Fulfillment Rate
Of the van restock lines and special-order pickups asked for, how many were ready when promised. Note why each miss happened: out of stock, a late delivery or a pick error.
Warehouse Safety Compliance
Items passed on a written monthly checklist you build: cylinder storage and condition, shelf loads, lifting aids and clear exits. A failed item counts against the score until it's fixed, so old problems can't hide.
Efficiency in Storage Management
Bins holding a part that moved in the last year, out of all bins in use. Return dead stock while the seller still takes it, or write it off and free the space.
Should an appliance repair warehouse manager drive parts out to techs?
Sometimes, when a part arrives that turns a waiting repair into a same-day fix. Write a rule for when a run is worth it, such as a family without a working refrigerator, and who approves it. Runs pull the manager off the floor, so if they happen every day, a driver or helper should make them.
How much does an appliance repair warehouse manager make?
Transportation, storage, and distribution managers who work for repair and maintenance businesses earned a median of $81,230 a year ($39.05 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $64,500 and $105,120 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
What should happen when a parts delivery arrives damaged or short?
Note it on the delivery record before the driver leaves when you can, take a photo, and tell the distributor the same day. Hold the damaged box as it came. Then tell dispatch which waiting repairs the shortage touches, so customers hear about a new date from the office before they find out the hard way.
How should flammable refrigerant cylinders be stored?
Follow the storage section of each refrigerant's safety data sheet and the cylinder's own label. Isobutane and propane, used in many newer refrigerators, are flammable, so keep their cylinders away from heat, open flames and anything that sparks. Put them on the checklist behind the template's safety KPI.
Who decides what each van carries?
The COO sets the policy and the inventory specialist keeps each van's list. The warehouse manager owns the stock behind those lists: enough on the shelf to refill every van overnight, and one person who approves any change to a list, so vans don't drift apart.
When does an appliance warehouse manager lift 50 pounds?
On the days the manager works the floor: unloading a pallet of compressors and motors, loading refrigerant cylinders into vans, or covering a restock when someone is out. The template's 50-pound line describes those tasks. Tell candidates how often they come up, and that accommodation is available for anyone who needs it.
