An appliance repair sales representative sells the company's repair and maintenance plans, mostly to homeowners the shop has already served, and signs small landlords and property managers to service agreements. The rep doesn't sell the repair; the tech quotes that in the kitchen. The rep sells what comes after: a plan that brings the homeowner back, or an agreement that sends a landlord's repairs to your shop.
In California, a check-up plan is a service contract
The template says reps sell repair plans or warranties. The FTC draws the line: a warranty comes with a product as part of its price, while a service contract is bought separately. Whoever makes a service contract must list all its terms clearly, in simple words, and warranty disclosures in one can leave buyers unsure which they have. Call your plan a plan unless it really is a warranty, and tell owners of newer appliances what it adds to the maker's warranty. Source: FTC: Businessperson's guide to federal warranty law (service contracts).
The template judges the rep on client retention. A plan renews best when the homeowner can see what it did: the check-up visit, the repair it paid for, the problem the tech caught early. Call before the term ends with that record open. If a plan renews on its own, the customer should have heard so at the sale and know how to cancel.
How much appliance repair sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for appliance repair sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for household goods repair shops earned a median of $29.00 an hour ($60,320 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 480 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for household goods repair shops.
A base salary and commission, per the template. Pay commission once a plan is paid for and past any refund period, and give renewals their own rate, since the template judges the rep on client retention.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Explains what a plan covers and what it doesn't, in plain words
Makes follow-up calls every day and logs each one
Talks about appliance faults with enough detail to answer a homeowner's questions
Takes a no without pushing and keeps the door open for later
Writes clear proposals for landlords with many units
Teach these on the job
Your plans' coverage, price, renewal and cancellation terms
Do Not Call checks and how your CRM flags each number
The brands your techs repair and the ones you're authorized for
How the office bills a property account
Common failures by appliance type and age
Reps work from a CRM or the plan module of your job software, with each customer's repair history open during the call. Before the first call goes out, set up call logging and a regular check of every number against the federal Do Not Call list.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Explaining plan coverage
A customer asks what a repair plan covers and what it doesn't. How do you explain it?
A strong answer: Explains covered appliances and parts, exclusions, limits, cost and cancellation terms in plain words, and gives it in writing.
Behavioral · Following up
Tell me about a time you followed up after selling a repair plan and found the customer misunderstood what it covered.
A strong answer: Took ownership, explained the coverage again in writing, got the office to fix or cancel it if that was fair, and kept the customer informed until it was settled.
Pull these from the CRM each month. Your first six months of plan sales will show what targets fit better than the template's samples.
Revenue per hour
Signed plan and account revenue for the month over the rep's hours on the clock. A low number often means time spent on landlords who never sign or on numbers the rep can't call.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ask plan customers to rate their first visit under the plan. When a score is low, check whether the customer expected coverage the plan doesn't give.
Monthly sales targets
Plans sold and accounts signed against the month's target, minus anything refunded or canceled. Split past repair customers from new ones.
Client Retention Rate
Plans and accounts that renewed, out of those that came up for renewal that month. Note why each one left, such as price, a move or a bad visit.
What does an appliance repair sales rep sell if the techs quote the repairs?
Plans and accounts. The tech quotes the repair in the home. The rep follows up later with a maintenance or repair plan, calls customers whose plans are ending, and signs landlords and property managers who need a repair vendor. Some shops also have the rep follow up with homeowners who turned down a repair quote.
How much does an appliance repair sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for household goods repair shops earned a median of $29.00 an hour ($60,320 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $47,950 and $82,430 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Should appliance techs sell plans on the job?
They can mention one, and many customers hear it best from the person who just fixed their dryer. Keep it simple for the tech: one plan sheet and one price. The rep or the office handles the sign-up and the questions, so the tech isn't explaining coverage terms on the way out the door.
A customer asks if the plan will buy them a new appliance. What should the rep say?
Only what the contract says. If it pays for repairs but not replacement, say so plainly, even if it costs the sale. A customer who thought the plan would buy them a new refrigerator becomes a refund request and a bad review. Have the plan's terms on screen during every call, and send the full terms in writing before payment.
Does an appliance repair sales rep need repair experience?
It helps, and the template lists knowing appliances and repair services as a requirement. A former CSR or helper already knows which faults are common and what a repair visit looks like. Someone from another sales job can learn that through a few weeks of ride-alongs and listening to booking calls.
Why does the sales rep template list sitting, standing, walking and lifting 15 pounds?
Those physical lines come straight from the template. For this rep they mean long stretches of calls at a desk, walking an apartment complex with a property manager to list the units, and carrying a laptop and plan folders to meetings. Put those tasks in the ad, and add that you'll make reasonable accommodations.
