What makes dispatching different in home staging

A staging dispatcher moves furniture, not service techs. The day is built from truckloads, house access and listing dates, and the larger trucks can fall under federal truck rules.

  • Reach drivers without a phone in their hand

Dispatchers call drivers all day, but federal rules bar drivers of commercial motor vehicles from using a hand-held phone while driving, and bar the company from allowing or requiring it. New Hampshire goes further and bans hand-held use for every driver, while allowing hands-free use. Set up hands-free calling in each truck, or wait for the driver to pull over. Source: eCFR: 49 CFR 392.82, using a hand-held mobile telephone.

  • A written-up defect parks the truck

Under FMCSA rules, drivers of covered trucks write up, at the end of each day, any defect they find or hear about in brakes, lights, tires, mirrors and other listed parts. The company must fix a safety defect and certify the repair before the truck runs again. Read those reports before you hand out trucks in the morning. Source: eCFR: 49 CFR 396.11, driver vehicle inspection reports.

  • Showings come first on a listed house

Many staged houses are already on the market, so the listing agent's showing schedule decides when a crew can work. Ask the agent for showing and open house times before you lock an install, swap or pickup, and keep trucks out of the driveway while buyers are touring. Put the agent's preferred contact in every job record.

  • Lights, keys and power before the truck rolls

Vacant listings sometimes have the power off, a lockbox that won't open or a gate code nobody passed on. The day before, confirm power, access and parking with the agent, and send the crew lead the codes. A crew waiting outside a dark house first thing in the morning can waste a whole truck's day.

How much home staging dispatchers make

Dispatchers who work for professional and technical services firms earned a median of $23.56 an hour ($49,000 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $50,340 median for dispatchers in all industries. About 5,680 of the 202,810 dispatchers in that survey work for professional and technical services firms.

Paid by the hour, plus a yearly bonus for performance. The template's hourly range brackets the BLS median for dispatchers across professional, scientific and technical firms, the closest group BLS reports.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Building a day from several trucks, crews and fixed install times
  • Short, clear updates to crews, agents and designers by text and phone
  • Quick rework of the day after a breakdown or an unready house
  • Reading a room plan well enough to know what goes on which truck
  • Accurate job records in scheduling software

Teach these on the job

  • Your service area's traffic, parking limits and building rules
  • Truck sizes, load space and which crew members drive which truck
  • How listing status (coming soon, active, pending) changes timing
  • Your inventory and staging software
  • FMCSA basics for driver reports and phone use

Staging dispatch runs on the company's staging or inventory software, a shared calendar and a phone that texts crews. Many companies add GPS tracking on the trucks so the dispatcher can see delays without calling a driver on the road.

Home staging dispatcher interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Same-day disruptions

A box truck breaks down at the warehouse with a full load for a [10 a.m.] install, and photos are booked for [3 p.m.]. What do you do?

A strong answer: Checks other trucks and crews, splits the load if needed, calls the agent and photographer early with honest timing and options, and re-sequences the rest of the day.

  2. Behavioral · Communicating last-minute changes

Tell me about a time you had to tell a client that a job tied to a fixed appointment, such as a photo shoot or closing, would be late.

A strong answer: Called early, explained why, gave a new time and options, and followed up.

Home staging dispatcher KPIs

These targets are a starting sketch. Log three or four weeks of installs and pickups, then set bars that fit your truck count and how far your houses sit from the warehouse.

Staging Task Assignment Accuracy
Count jobs where the crew, truck or load had to change on the day because the first assignment was wrong, such as too small a truck or a missing piece, and divide by all jobs assigned.
Daily Schedule Update Compliance
Check each evening that every job in the software shows its real status, start and finish times, and change notes. Spot check a few jobs against crew texts.
Furniture Transport Timeliness
Compare each truck's arrival at the house with the time promised to the agent or designer, using GPS or crew check-ins, and note the cause of every late arrival.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Use the post-install survey answers on timing and communication, and read comments about arrival windows and updates from dispatch.

Home staging dispatcher FAQ

Does a staging dispatcher work in the field?

Sometimes. The template mixes office and field work: walking a house with the crew lead to sort out a missing piece, carrying a table lamp or a carton of pillows and art to a job (the template sets 25 pounds as the top), or checking loads on the warehouse floor. The rest is at a desk or standing at the dispatch board with a phone and screens.

How much does a home staging dispatcher make?

Dispatchers who work for professional and technical services firms earned a median of $23.56 an hour ($49,000 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $43,240 and $61,210 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

What should a dispatcher do when the crew finds the house isn't ready?

Painters still working, a floor not dry or the seller's boxes in the rooms can stall an install. Have the crew lead send photos, call the agent to agree on what can be staged now, and decide with the designer whether to set part of the house or come back. Move the next job up if the truck can make it.

Does a staging dispatcher need to know design?

Not to design, but they need to read the room plan and piece list. Knowing a sectional from a loveseat, or that a king bed and a dining set won't share the small truck, saves a second trip. Ask candidates to plan two installs from sample plans and truck sizes during the interview.

Who should tell the agent about a delay, the dispatcher or the designer?

Agree on one rule and stick to it. Many staging companies have the dispatcher send timing updates, since they see the trucks, and the designer handle anything about what goes in the house. Either way, the agent should hear about a delay before the crew is late, not after.
