A basement waterproofing sales representative, often called an inspector or system designer, visits homes with water, cracks or a damp crawl space. They take moisture readings, find where the water gets in, explain the options in a written proposal with price and financing, and ask for the sale.

The visit is part inspection, part sale. The homeowner sees a wet floor; the rep has to show where the water comes from, what will stop it and what it costs, in writing.
Readings that show where water gets in
Start outside: gutters, downspouts, how the yard slopes, window wells. Inside, a moisture meter on each wall and along the floor edge, checked against a dry spot, maps the wet areas. White crust on block, a damp line where wall meets floor, and rust in the sump pit each tell part of the story. Photograph each one, so the proposal, the crew and any later warranty call point to the same evidence.
Options from one wall to the whole basement
Not every wet basement needs a full drain. A downspout extension, regraded soil or a sealed crack may fix one wall, and a worn pump may just need replacing. Water along several walls usually calls for an interior drain and pump. A bowing wall may need bracing, under your rule on when an engineer looks first. Put each option in the written proposal: drain length, pump model, backup power, warranty terms and what isn't covered.
Fair lending rules reach the kitchen table
A company that regularly sends homeowners to lenders counts as a creditor under Regulation B for two rules. It may not discriminate on a prohibited basis, such as race, sex, marital status, age or income from public assistance. And it may not say anything, out loud or in an ad, that it knows or should know would make a reasonable person believe the lender would deny them, or offer worse terms, because of one. Never tell a retiree a long loan won't go through; offer everyone the same plans. Source: eCFR: 12 CFR 1002.2, Regulation B definitions (creditor, prohibited basis).
Honest urgency
Water does damage over time, and the wet season comes back every year; those are real reasons to act. A hairline crack that hasn't changed in years isn't an emergency, so don't call it one. Show the readings, explain what happens if nothing changes, and let the homeowner pick a start date. If a wall may be moving, say so plainly and follow your engineer rule before pricing braces.
Outside sales, in waterproofing terms
Federal overtime rules treat a rep as an outside salesperson when getting contracts for services is the main duty, done customarily and regularly at customers' homes. Work incidental to the rep's own sales counts toward that duty, so the inspection, readings and proposal on their own visits count. A home show booth that runs a week or two isn't your place of business if the rep really sells there. Collecting leads for other reps' visits is promotion work, and it isn't exempt. How much basement waterproofing sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for basement waterproofing sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,910 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building finishing contractors.
Salary, with commission possible, in the template. A waterproofing sale can unwind two ways, a cancellation inside the window or a loan the lender turns down, so write down what each one does to the rep's commission.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Finds the water source before talking about price
Explains readings and options without jargon or scare talk
Writes a proposal a lead installer can build from
Looks into the sump pit, the crawl space and behind stored boxes before writing anything
Logs each visit's result and photos the same day
Teach these on the job
Using a moisture meter and hygrometer, and reading the results
Your drain, pump, wall bracing and crawl space systems
Your financing plans and the fair lending rules
Your warranty terms and what voids them
When to call in a structural engineer
The kit: a moisture meter (pin or pinless), a hygrometer for crawl space air, a bright flashlight, a laser measure or tape, and a tablet with the photos, proposal and loan applications. Tell applicants which pieces you provide.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Recommending the simple fix
You find the leak is caused by a downspout dumping next to the foundation. What do you tell the homeowner?
A strong answer: Tells them plainly, recommends extending the downspout first, and explains when a system would still be needed.
Behavioral · Honesty over the sale
Tell me about a time telling a customer the truth cost you a sale, like explaining that damp walls were condensation, not a leak.
A strong answer: Gives a real case, such as telling a homeowner a downspout fix was enough, explains why it was right, and any referral or later business that came from it.
Compare reps who get the same kinds of leads. Then swap the template's sample figures for numbers your own reps have hit.
Revenue per hour
Held sales the rep wrote, divided by hours from arriving at the first home to leaving the last, from the CRM and calendar. Long gaps between visits are a scheduling problem; note them apart.
Sale Closing rate
Start from sit-downs with every owner present, then count the proposals signed and kept past the cancellation window. Declined loans get their own line, since the lender, not the rep, made that call.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Scores from every homeowner the rep visited, buyers and non-buyers both. Read the non-buyers' comments for pressure or confusion about the price.
Number of new customers acquired monthly
Each new address the rep sold this month that stayed sold. A past customer adding a battery backup is an add-on, not a new customer; track it apart.

What do the template's lifting and confined space lines mean for an inspector?
The template's lines cover lifting up to 30 pounds and working in varied weather, in basements and other confined spaces. On the job, that means carrying a sample case and meter kit down basement stairs, lifting a sump pit lid, kneeling at a crawl space hatch to look inside, and walking the yard in rain or snow. Edit the lines if your visits differ, and offer reasonable accommodation.
How much does a basement waterproofing sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $48,330 and $89,990 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Where do good waterproofing inspectors come from?
Installers who explain the work well, reps from roofing, windows or foundation repair, and home inspectors who already read basements. Two years in sales or customer service is the template's floor. Have finalists walk a wet basement with you and say where the water gets in before they say a word about price.
What should a rep leave with a homeowner who didn't buy?
The readings and photos, the written proposal with the price and how long it holds, and a name to call. In the CRM, note what stopped the sale and who was at the table, so the rehash specialist starts from facts. Don't drop the price as you leave; the proposal should already show the real one.
Should waterproofing inspectors also run service calls?
Keep it rare. Swapping a pump or fixing an alarm isn't sales work. If service fills a large part of the week, selling may stop being the main duty the outside sales exemption needs, and the rep's hours would then need tracking for overtime. Send service to the service team, and let the rep note any upgrade the homeowner asks about.
