Floor coating customer service representative job description
A floor coating customer service representative sets up in-home estimates for garages, basements and shops. First they get what the estimator needs: how old the slab is, what's on it now and what sits in the garage. They also take calls from customers waiting on an install date or worried about a floor already coated.

What a floor coating CSR finds out on the first call
An estimator can price a floor in one visit only if the call got the basics. The slab's age, any old coating on it and what's stored in the garage can change the price, the crew plan and the install date.
Brand-new slabs have to wait
Coating makers set a wait for new concrete. Rust-Oleum's EpoxyShield sheet, for example, says to let newly poured concrete cure at least 28 days before coating. People in a just-built home or a new garage often want the floor done before they move in or park. The CSR asks when the slab was poured, books the estimate, and notes the earliest install date your product's sheet allows. Old paint or sealer means more grinding
The same Rust-Oleum sheet says loose or peeling paint has to come off, and a sealed floor needs its sealer removed, before its coating goes down. Coating crews grind that away, which takes time the estimator has to price. Ask every caller whether the floor was ever painted, sealed or rolled with a store-bought kit, and get photos by text of peeling spots, oil stains and cracks. Ask what lives in the garage
Cars, a second fridge or freezer, shelving bolted to the wall, a gas water heater or a furnace: each one changes the job. Stored things have to come out, an appliance may need a new spot and an outlet for a day or two, and the lead has to plan around a pilot light. When those notes are in the booking, the estimator and the lead can plan before anyone arrives.
Shops and showrooms get a different call
A business owner calling about an auto bay, a showroom or a commercial kitchen needs other questions. How many square feet? What rolls, drips or spills on the floor? How long can the space close, and is there a written spec? The CSR takes those details and books the person who prices commercial floors, instead of a slot meant for a garage.
How much floor coating customer service representatives make
Customer service representatives who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $22.33 an hour ($46,450 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Asks slab age, old coatings and garage contents on every call
Gets callers to text clear photos before the estimate
Tells a garage caller from a commercial one in the first minute
Leaves estimate notes with size, condition and access
Logs a complaint about a finished floor without guessing at its cause
Teach these on the job
Flake, solid color, metallic and quartz systems and how they differ
Your product's wait for new concrete and its temperature limits
How your estimators split garage and commercial work
Your CRM, booking calendar and texting tool
What your warranty covers and who handles a claim
CSRs book in the company's CRM, with each estimator's calendar, a phone system that logs missed calls, and two-way texting for callers' slab photos and visit reminders. A set of finished-floor photos by system, kept on the CSR's screen, helps callers picture flake blends and colors before the visit.
Floor coating customer service representative interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Return to service
A caller asks how long their garage will be out of use. What do you say?
A strong answer: Gives the company's typical timing from product guidance, explains it depends on the system and weather, and has the salesperson confirm.
Behavioral · Follow-up calls
Tell me about a time a follow-up call after an install turned up something the customer was quietly unhappy about, like a rough patch or the wrong flake color.
A strong answer: Asked open questions, got photos, logged it, booked the right person to look, told the customer when to expect contact, and checked it was closed.
Floor coating customer service representative KPIs
Report garage and commercial callers on separate lines, since a shop owner's questions take longer. Let a year of your phone and CRM records set each target.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Survey scores about booking, reminders and how well the call prepared the customer, kept apart from scores about the finished floor. Compare each low score with that caller's notes.
Estimate Scheduling Efficiency
Calls from new prospects that end with an estimate on the calendar, out of all prospect calls. Leave out vendors and wrong numbers, and note callers asked to wait because their slab is too new.
Inquiry Response Time
How long a web form, voicemail, email or text waits for a real answer, from the CRM and phone time stamps. Report messages that came in after hours on a separate line.
Callback Resolution Rate
Problem calls that needed a second follow-up before they were settled, out of all problem calls. Sort them by type, such as an install date, a bill or a flaw in a finished floor.
Career path
Retail or showroom sales associateLearns to explain products and colors to customers face to face.
Customer service representativeBooks estimates and gets the slab, coating and garage details first.
A caller is worried about fumes. What does the CSR say?
Facts, not medical advice. Offer to email the coating's safety data sheet, along with your prep sheet. Explain your crew's routine, such as keeping the door to the house shut and asking people and pets to stay out of the garage until the lead says it's ready. Anyone with health questions should ask their doctor. Pass concerns about a certain person or pet to the lead installer.
How much does a floor coating customer service representative make?
Customer service representatives who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $22.33 an hour ($46,450 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $39,500 and $53,930 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Can a garage floor be coated in winter?
It depends on the garage. Each product has temperature limits for the air and the slab, and the operations manager decides whether a job goes ahead. The CSR books the estimate as usual and tells winter callers that the install date depends on conditions in the garage that week. Ask whether the garage is heated or attached to the house, and note the answer.
What should the CSR ask when a coated floor has a problem?
Where on the floor it is, when it showed up, and what happened there first, such as a hot tire, a dropped tool or a spill. Ask for photos that show the whole bay as well as the spot, and pull the install date from the job file. Don't guess whether the warranty covers it. Book the field supervisor's visit under your company's rules, and tell the customer when to expect it.
What do the CSR template's vision, hearing and lifting lines mean here?
Hearing callers clearly on a headset, sometimes over road or garage noise, and reading the slab and crack photos customers text in. The lifting covers brochures, flake sample boards and estimate folders of up to 15 pounds, and the odd visit to a customer's garage with an estimator. Add those tasks below the template's lines, and say who answers accommodation requests.
