Floor coating installer job description

A floor coating installer grinds concrete garage, basement and shop floors, fills the cracks, and rolls on epoxy or polyaspartic coatings with a flake or solid color finish. Most garages take a day or two, so installers work quickly once the resin is mixed and leave a floor the family can use again soon.

What makes floor coating installation different

Most of a coating job happens before any color goes down. The crew grinds the slab open and patches it, then has only minutes to spread a two-part resin before it starts to set.

  • Grinding the slab is silica work

Coatings grip concrete that has been ground open with diamond tooling, and grinding concrete raises silica dust. OSHA's silica table lets a walk-behind floor grinder run without a respirator when it has a water feed, or with the grinder maker's recommended dust collector and HEPA vacuuming between passes indoors. The hand grinder used at edges and cracks gets a shroud and vacuum. Inside a garage or basement, the table adds a respirator once a worker's time on the table's tasks tops four hours in a shift. Source: 29 CFR 1926.1153: Respirable crystalline silica in construction (Cornell LII).

  • Epoxy can cause a skin allergy

The safety data sheet for a two-part epoxy garage kit from Rust-Oleum lists both the resin and the hardener as skin sensitizers. It warns the allergy can show up on a later exposure, and it calls for gloves the resin can't soak through. Installers who wipe resin off bare hands or kneel in a wet coat are the ones at risk. Keep gloves and sleeves on the truck, and read the sheet for each product you carry. Source: Rust-Oleum: two-part epoxy garage floor kit safety data sheet (2025).

  • Fast-curing coats leave minutes, not hours

Ameripolish's data sheet for its polyaspartic topcoat says to mix no more than the crew can spread in about ten minutes, and that damper air shortens that window. The mix thickens quickly once it's stirred. So one person mixes, one pours and spreads, and one back-rolls right behind, and nobody stops for a phone call. An installer who has only rolled slower products needs practice before working at this pace on a customer's floor. Source: Ameripolish: Polyaspartic 85 technical data sheet (October 2025).

  • Every flaw shows under the clear coat

Many garage systems are a colored base coat, vinyl flakes thrown until the base is covered, and a clear topcoat. Missed spots, roller lines and loose flakes left on the floor show through the clear coat for as long as the floor lasts. Before the topcoat goes on, a careful installer scrapes and vacuums the flakes, then walks the floor with a work light held low to catch anything raised.

How much floor coating installers make

The closest BLS group for floor coating installers is painters, construction and maintenance. Painters, construction and maintenance who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $23.47 an hour ($48,810 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $49,400 median for painters, construction and maintenance in all industries. About 148,030 of the 225,190 painters, construction and maintenance in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

The template's hourly wage comes with bonuses for quality work and completed jobs. BLS has no floor coating code, so these figures cover construction painters, the closest match for rolling coatings onto a prepared surface. Cement masons, who also grind and patch slabs, earn somewhat more nationally.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Runs a walk-behind diamond grinder and a hand grinder with dust collection
  • Fills cracks and pits and sands the patch flush
  • Mixes two-part coatings by the label's ratio and timing
  • Spreads with a squeegee and back-rolls without leaving lap lines
  • Broadcasts flakes evenly and scrapes the floor before the topcoat
  • Keeps resin off skin, walls and the homeowner's belongings

Teach these on the job

  • Your coating systems and the order each coat goes down
  • Moisture tests with calcium chloride kits and meters
  • Wearing and caring for a respirator under your program
  • Choosing diamond tooling for hard and soft slabs
  • Your job photos and material log

Crews run a walk-behind diamond grinder hooked to a dust extractor, hand grinders for edges, a HEPA vacuum, a drill mixer, squeegees, rollers and spiked shoes for walking on wet coating. Tell applicants which coatings you put down, epoxy, polyaspartic or both, and which gear the company supplies.

Floor coating installer interview questions

Two of the 7 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Outgassing

On a warming morning, bubbles and pinholes start forming in your primer coat. What do you do?

A strong answer: Recognizes outgassing from the warming slab, tells the lead, follows the maker's fix, such as a second primer coat to seal pinholes before the topcoat, and plans coats for when the slab temperature is falling.

  2. Behavioral · Learning from failures

Tell me about a coating job that didn't turn out right. What caused it?

A strong answer: Names a real cause, like poor prep, moisture, a bad mix or timing, owns their part, and says what they check now.

Floor coating installer KPIs

Run the first busy season on the template's numbers, then swap in ones drawn from your own floors. Score one-car garages, basements and shop floors as separate groups, since each goes wrong in its own way.

Installation Accuracy Rate
Floors that match the color, flake blend, finish and edge lines on the work order at the final walk-through, out of all floors this installer worked. Note when a wrong order, not the installer, caused the miss.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ratings on this installer's garages and basements, read with comments about masking, cleanup and whether the family got clear times for walking and parking.
Callback Rate
Return trips for peeling, bubbles, bare spots or loose flakes, out of all finished floors. Tag each with the slab's moisture reading and the product batch to separate prep problems from material ones.
Equipment Uptime
Hours the grinders, dust collectors and vacuums were in working order when jobs called for them, out of scheduled hours. Log worn tooling, clogged filters and damaged cords as they happen.

Career path

Floor coating installer FAQ

What does a floor coating installer do on a garage job?

The crew tapes off the walls, grinds the slab and vacuums up the dust. Next they fill cracks and pits, roll on a colored base coat, and throw flakes until the base is covered. Once that has cured enough, they scrape and vacuum the loose flakes, roll the clear topcoat, and leave the homeowner with times for walking and parking.

How much does a floor coating installer make?

Painters, construction and maintenance who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $23.47 an hour ($48,810 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $44,740 and $60,510 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Should I hire a painter or a concrete worker to coat floors?

Either can learn it, and each brings half the job. A commercial or industrial painter already mixes two-part coatings and rolls without lap lines. A concrete finisher knows slabs, cracks and patching, and may have run a grinder. The hard part to teach is speed, since a fast-curing coat leaves no time to learn on a customer's floor. Ask which coatings and grinders they've used, and on how many floors.

How do I test a floor coating installer before hiring?

Pay for a short tryout on a scrap slab or your shop floor. Have them grind a strip, patch a crack, then mix a small kit and roll it out with a back-roll. Watch whether they check the ratio and time on the label, keep cords and hoses out of the wet coat, and pull on gloves without being told.

Does humid weather change a coating job?

It can. Ameripolish's polyaspartic data sheet calls drier air ideal and says higher humidity shortens the time the mix stays workable. The same sheet says to store kits between 40 and 110 degrees and keep them from freezing, so kits left in a truck on a winter night can be a problem. Each product sets its own limits, so installers check the sheet for the one on the job.

How should a floor coating ad describe the physical work?

Name the tasks. Installers push a walk-behind grinder, kneel to grind and roll along walls, carry kits and equipment from the truck, and lift as much as 50 pounds at a time, per the template's physical list. They work in garages that can be hot or cold and sometimes in tight basements. Say what gear you provide, such as knee pads, spiked shoes and respirators.
