A floor coating chief executive officer decides the company's product line, from one-day garage floors to commercial systems, and which coating makers it buys from. The CEO sets the terms of the floor warranty, decides where the next crews go, and shows the owners or board what warranty claims cost each year.

A coated floor is sold in one visit and put down in a day or two, yet the company may answer for it for decades. That gap shapes this CEO's hardest choices: the warranty, the coating makers and the kinds of floors the company goes after.
The maker's warranty ends long before yours
Coating makers back their product, not your promise. APF's warranty for its polyaspartic topcoat, for example, covers defects in the material for one year from shipment. It leaves out labor and the cost of removing and redoing a floor, and caps the maker's liability at what you paid for the product. If you sell a lifetime floor warranty, nearly all of that risk stays with your company. So the CEO sets the length of the floor warranty knowing the company, not the maker, will pay for most claims. A warranty is a legal promise
State rules can set what a floor warranty must say. Wisconsin is one example. Its home improvement rule says a warranty must clearly state its conditions and exclusions, any limits on what it covers or how long it lasts, and how soon the company will do the work after a valid claim. A contractor may not give a warranty it doesn't intend to honor in full. So a lifetime promise needs its exclusions in writing, such as slab moisture, new cracks or chemical spills. Source: Example state: Wisconsin Administrative Code ATCP 110.04, home improvement warranties.
One coating maker or several
Buying most products from one maker can bring crew training, better pricing and a named system to put in commercial bids. It also ties your margin to that maker's price list and your schedule to its supply. Carrying more than one line spreads the risk but splits training and stock. The CEO sets the product strategy and decides whether floors are sold under the maker's brand or the company's own.
Garages, basements or commercial floors
Garage floors are sold house by house after an in-home estimate, so they live on ads, referrals and reviews. Commercial floors for shops, showrooms, kitchens and warehouses are bid against written specs, and a few large accounts can carry a season. If garage bookings slow in your winters, heated commercial space can keep crews busy. The CEO sets the target for each, then funds the crews and cash to reach it.
How much floor coating chief executive officers make
The closest BLS group for floor coating chief executive officers is chief executives. Chief executives who work for specialty trade contractors earned a median of $169,170 a year ($81.33 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $213,990 median for chief executives in all industries. About 3,830 of the 204,350 chief executives in that survey work for specialty trade contractors.
Because a rushed floor can fail a season after it was sold, consider paying part of the template's profit share only after the year's warranty claims are counted.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Has led a company or division that sells home projects at the kitchen table and puts them in with its own crews
Reads a warranty's terms and prices the risk behind them
Has negotiated supply terms with a product maker or distributor
Can tell garage, basement and commercial results apart in a profit and loss
Has built a senior team that includes finance and operations leaders
Teach these on the job
Epoxy, polyaspartic and quartz systems and what makes each fail
Your maker agreements and product warranty terms
What each state you work in requires of a written warranty
Your CRM and estimate-to-install reports
How commercial owners and general contractors buy floors
A floor coating CEO works from a profit and loss for every market, split by coating system, a log of warranty claims with what each one cost, and the price lists and supply terms from each coating maker. Tell candidates which coating lines you install and how sales, installs and warranty work are tracked today.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Dealer or franchise programs
A manufacturer offers you an exclusive dealer program with marketing support but locks you into their products. How do you decide?
A strong answer: Compares margins, product quality, what happens if the product fails, exit terms, and the value of the support against staying independent.
Behavioral · Learning from mistakes
Tell me about a business decision you got wrong, such as a product, market or hire, and what you changed afterward.
A strong answer: Explains what they believed at the time, what the results showed, how fast they reversed course, and the rule they use now.
The owners or board should agree on every target, and margin should be judged after warranty work, not on sales alone.
Revenue Growth
Growth in installed revenue by market, with new markets shown apart from the ones the company already served. Book a floor when it's installed, not when it's signed, since cancelled contracts can make a year look bigger than it was.
Gross Margin
Take crew labor, coatings, flake, tooling and warranty repairs out of revenue, then read the margin for each system and market. Keeping warranty labor in shows what long promises really cost.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Public star ratings by market, read beside how quickly each market closes warranty claims. A floor that peels a few years in can hurt reviews long after the install.
New Partnership Development
Count partners that sent work or a signed job this year, such as garage door and garage storage companies, home builders offering coated garages, real estate agents and commercial contractors. Leave out partners in name only.

Does federal warranty law cover a coated garage floor?
It can. FTC rules treat materials a homeowner buys under a home improvement contract as consumer products, so a written warranty on them falls under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Materials built into a new home or garage under a builder's contract don't count. The FTC says a warranty on workmanship alone is outside the Act, but one that covers both the materials and the work must follow it. That includes titling it a full or limited warranty, and a full warranty can't cut off a later homeowner during its term. Have a lawyer review yours.
How much does a floor coating chief executive officer make?
Chief executives who work for specialty trade contractors earned a median of $169,170 a year ($81.33 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $100,570 and $283,340 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Should a floor coating company sell franchises?
Franchising is one way into new markets, but it's a second business with its own legal duties. Under the FTC's Franchise Rule, a franchisor must give a buyer its current disclosure document at least 14 calendar days before the buyer signs a binding agreement or pays anything. You also need training, a product supply program and field support that work without you on site. Talk with a franchise attorney before you sell the first one.
What does the CEO template's 20-pound lifting line cover?
Trade events, mostly. The CEO carries sample boards, flake charts and small product kits to home shows and industry events and helps set up the booth. Site visits mean walking customers' garages and commercial floors in every season, plus tours of coating makers' plants. The ad can list those tasks and say that accommodation is available on request.
Should floor coating run as its own company or as a division?
The template is written for a floor coating division, which some companies run beside garage door, closet or concrete work. A division can share leads, trucks and an office, but it still needs its own profit and loss, crews and warranty records. Otherwise a slow season in one line hides losses in the other. If you might sell the division one day, keep its books apart from the start.
