A floor coating sales representative visits homeowners to look over a garage, basement or shop floor, measure it, and check the slab for cracks, old coatings and damp. They walk the buyer through coating systems and flake colors, write the proposal and ask for the sale, often on that first visit.

A garage looks simple: a slab, three walls and a door. The rep's job is to find what the crew will run into, show the buyer how the floor will look and feel, and write a contract the crew can install from.
The cancel window comes before the grinder
Crews can often coat a garage within days, which tempts reps to offer tomorrow. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule isn't only for kitchen-table sales: it also covers a floor signed for at a short-term site such as a home show booth. If the homeowner cancels in time, the rule has you return all payments within 10 business days. A ground slab can't be put back, so the first install date a rep offers should come after the buyer's three business days to cancel are up. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR Part 429, FTC Cooling-Off Rule.
Glossy floors get slick when wet
Snowmelt and rain off a car leave water on a garage floor. Rust-Oleum's EpoxyShield sheet notes that a coated slab is usually smoother than bare concrete and can get slippery when wet, and it points to an anti-skid additive. Ameripolish says its topcoat can make an anti-skid finish when additives are mixed in. Show the buyer a textured sample, price texture as an option, and write their choice on the contract. Source: Rust-Oleum: EpoxyShield Garage Floor Universal Tint Base technical data sheet (ESH-48).
Every surface the crew will coat
The open floor is only part of it. Note the stem walls along the sides, the steps into the house, the strip under the door, floor drains and saw cuts, and anything bolted to the floor or walls that has to move. Write down which of these the price includes, so the final invoice, built from what the crew coated, matches the proposal the homeowner signed.
Name the system on the contract
State rules can require it. In Wisconsin, for example, a home improvement contract that takes payment before the work is done must be in writing. It must describe the principal products and materials, including any the seller promised, give the start and finish dates or time period, and name the sales rep who negotiated it. For a coated floor, that means the base coat, flake blend, topcoat and number of coats, not just "epoxy floor." Source: Example state: Wisconsin Administrative Code ATCP 110.05, home improvement contract requirements.
How much floor coating sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for floor coating sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,910 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building finishing contractors.
Per the template, each rep draws a set base and earns commission on the floors they close. Decide whether a floor sold from a home show booth pays the same rate as an appointment the office booked, and who gets credit when a rep's own referral calls the office instead of the rep.

Asks for the sale without pushing a start date into the cancel window
Writes a contract the lead can install from without calling
Teach these on the job
Your coating systems, coats and flake blends
Your price book and its add-on prices
What your floor warranty covers and leaves out

Your proposal app and CRM
Reps carry a laser measure, a flashlight, a spray bottle for the sealer test, plastic sheets and tape for a rough damp check, flake chip samples and textured sample boards, and a tablet with the price book and contract. Reps will ask who pays for the kit and the vehicle, so answer both in the ad.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Lowest-price buyers
A customer says they just want the cheapest option. What do you do?
A strong answer: Explains what affects price and durability, offers real options, and respects their budget.
Behavioral · Self-generated leads
Tell me how you've found your own leads, beyond the ones the office handed you.
A strong answer: Names methods like neighbor outreach near finished jobs, referrals or partners, and results.
Leave any sale that cancels inside the window out of every number, and judge each rep against reps with a similar mix of garage, basement and commercial leads. After a season, set targets from your own CRM.
New Sales
Signed floors each month, by rep, with garage, basement and commercial floors on separate lines.
Revenue per Sale
Average contract value of the rep's sold floors, with add-ons such as stem walls, steps or texture listed apart. Read it against floor size, since a one-car garage can't match a three-car.
Generated Estimates
In-person estimates each week that left the homeowner with a written price. Put the ones a rep found on their own, such as a neighbor who came over to watch a crew, on a separate line.
Lead Conversion Rate
Floors sold and kept, divided by estimates run, by lead source. A rep who closes referrals but not paid leads needs coaching on the first minutes of the visit.

What do the rep template's garage, walking and lifting lines cover?
The estimate itself. Reps walk the garage and driveway, kneel to look at cracks and the edges of old coatings, drip water to see whether a sealer is present, and carry a sample case of up to 20 pounds. Garages can be stifling in July and freezing in January. Turn those into task lines under the template's wording in the ad, and offer to talk through accommodations with any candidate.
How much does a floor coating sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $48,330 and $89,990 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Can a rep check for moisture at the estimate?
Only roughly. Rust-Oleum's sheet describes taping a plastic sheet to bare concrete for 24 hours, then looking for droplets or darker concrete underneath. A rep can leave one down and ask the homeowner to text a photo the next day. That isn't the measured test the lead runs before mixing, so price the moisture barrier as an option and let the lead's reading decide.
Can an installer become a good floor coating rep?
Some do. A lead installer already reads slabs and knows how long each coat takes, and homeowners believe them. What they need is practice asking for the sale and writing a clean contract. Pair them with a senior rep for a few weeks of estimates, and let them take over the talk about price once they handle the prep questions with ease.
Should reps sell basement floors the same way as garages?
Mostly, with more care about damp. Basements sit below ground, so look for water stains, white powder on the walls and floor, and a sump pit, and price the moisture option every time. Ask how the crew will get the grinder and kits down the stairs, and whether the space will be finished later.
