What a helper does differently in commercial pest control

Commercial helpers work around food lines, loading docks and stockrooms, and much of the job is getting gear ready and leaving sites clean.

  • Rodent droppings get wet before they get wiped

Cleanup after rodent work often falls to the helper. CDC's basic steps: wear rubber or plastic gloves, spray urine and droppings until very wet, using diluted household bleach or an EPA-registered disinfectant, and let it soak for 5 minutes or as the label directs. Wipe up with paper towels and put them in a covered trash can. Never sweep or vacuum droppings. CDC lists more protective gear for heavy infestations, so set a rule for when your crews switch to it. Source: CDC: How to clean up after rodents.

  • Empty jugs get triple rinsed

Federal rules require labels on dilutable pesticides sold in rigid, single-use containers to carry rinse steps. A common version: empty the jug into the spray tank, fill it a quarter full with water, shake, and pour the rinse water into the tank, then repeat two more times. Once a helper is cleared to handle concentrate, teach them to follow the steps on each label and set rinsed jugs aside for disposal as the label says. Source: eCFR: 40 CFR 156.146, Residue removal instructions for rigid containers with dilutable pesticides.

  • Leave nothing behind in a food plant

Food plants worry about anything that could end up in product. A helper should count tools and hardware in and out, pick up backing paper, zip-tie ends and screws, and never leave a glue board or bait block loose. Check the floor around every device before moving on.

  • Install days are helper days

New commercial accounts often start with a big install of stations, traps and light traps, and changes to a site add more later. The helper carries the cases, secures each station so it can't be moved, and labels it as the technician records it. Teach the mounting method you use on each kind of wall and pavement.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Follows written steps the same way every time
  • Asks before handling a product they haven't been shown
  • Keeps tools, trucks and work areas tidy
  • Arrives on time and ready for the first stop
  • Stays polite with client staff working nearby

Teach these on the job

  • Your truck load-out list and equipment checks
  • Station, trap and light trap installation
  • Label reading and safe refilling
  • Cleanup steps after rodent work
  • Job notes in your pest control app

Helpers handle hand sprayers, dusters, bait stations, multi-catch traps, glue boards, light traps and ladders, plus the gloves and eye protection your labels call for. Most pick up the job notes screen in your pest control app in their first weeks.

Commercial pest control helper interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Protecting food at client sites

You're helping a technician in a restaurant kitchen after closing and see uncovered food left on a prep table near where they'll treat. What do you do?

A strong answer: Points it out to the technician before anything is applied, so the food gets covered or put away by the restaurant's staff. Nothing is treated near exposed food.

  2. Behavioral · Doing it right unobserved

Tell me about a time at work, school or volunteering when you followed a strict rule even though nobody was checking.

A strong answer: A real example, why the rule mattered to them, and what it cost them in time or effort.

Commercial pest control helper KPIs

Don't treat the template's targets as fixed. Set yours from what your trucks, routes and safety records show in the helper's first few months, and review them with the field supervisor.

Equipment readiness rate
Use a morning checklist for each truck and sprayer, and count the days everything on the list was ready before the technician left. Note what was missing.
Chemical refill accuracy
Spot-check refilled service containers against your written refill steps: right product, label on the container, right amount and a clean outside. Record each check and any step missed.
On-time service assist rate
Compare when the helper was due to meet a technician or start an install with when they arrived, using your routing software. Count the late starts and the reasons.
Safety compliance rate
Have the supervisor watch the helper work against a short list: gloves and eye protection worn, products secured, spills reported, sites left clean. Track the items passed over time.

Commercial pest control helper FAQ

What work history fits a commercial pest control helper?

Food plant sanitation, janitorial work and warehouse jobs all build the habits this role needs: following written steps, working around production staff and keeping an area clean. Restaurant kitchen work helps too, since many accounts are kitchens. Ask candidates how they followed a chemical or cleaning rule at their last job.

How much does a commercial pest control helper make?

Pest control workers who work for pest control companies earned a median of $21.60 an hour ($44,930 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $37,300 and $49,190 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Should a helper ride with one technician or several?

Start with one strong technician for the first weeks, so habits form the same way. Then rotate the helper through food plant, restaurant and warehouse routes, so they see how each kind of account is serviced before you decide which route they will train toward.

What should a helper say when client staff ask about the products?

Be polite, explain they are with the technician, and bring the technician or supervisor over. Questions about what was applied, safety data sheets or when people can go back into a room belong to the certified technician, who knows the product and its label.

What does the template's physical wording mean for a commercial helper?

Carrying cases of stations, bait and glue boards between the truck and the site, lifting full sprayers and jugs of concentrate, and kneeling or bending to place devices along walls and racks. Much of the day is on foot in plants and warehouses, with outdoor work around dumpsters and building edges in every season and some tight spaces in equipment rooms.
