What's different about pest control inventory at a commercial company

The shelf holds registered pesticides and a long list of monitoring supplies. These are the parts a general stock clerk won't know.

  • Connecticut registers everything that controls a pest

Every pesticide sold or used in Connecticut must be registered with DEEP's Pesticide Program. The state reads pesticide broadly. It includes insecticides, antimicrobials and most products made or marketed to control or repel a pest. The maker or distributor files the registration, but your technicians use the product. Before a new product goes on the shelf, confirm it is registered in Connecticut and keep the proof with the order. Source: Connecticut DEEP: Pesticide Management's top 10 compliance issues (Aug. 2025).

  • Delaware registrations end on June 30

Any pesticide product sold or distributed in Delaware must carry a registration from Delaware's Department of Agriculture. Registrations last two years and end on June 30 of the year they expire. Products exempt from federal registration under section 25(b) are registered too, at no fee. Each spring, check the products you send to Delaware accounts against the state's online database. • Each food plant approves its own product list

Food plants, drug makers and many hospitals approve the exact products allowed on their site. Keep each account's list in your system. Flag any order that would send an unlisted product there. Get the client's written OK before a substitute goes out. An unlisted product can become an audit finding even when the label allows the use.

  • Monitoring supplies run on a calendar

Commercial accounts use pheromone lures, glue boards, light trap bulbs and multi-catch traps by the case. Lures and boards are changed on set schedules. Read each lure package for the maker's storage and date notes, store lures that way and use the oldest stock first. Count them like product, so an out-of-date lure never goes out on a route.

How much commercial pest control inventory specialists make

The closest BLS group for commercial pest control inventory specialists is shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks. Shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $22.60 an hour ($47,010 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s above the $45,260 median for shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks in all industries. About 520 of the 816,870 shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks in that survey work for building and home services companies.

Hourly, plus a KPI bonus once a year. Someone who has handled regulated chemical stock before is worth the top of your range.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Counts carefully and finds the cause when numbers don't match
  • Reads a pesticide label's storage and handling sections
  • Keeps neat, current records in software and spreadsheets
  • Talks plainly with technicians about what they took and why
  • Works around supplier backorders without stopping a route

Teach these on the job

  • Your product list and the accounts each product serves
  • State product registration lookups
  • Stock and usage reports in your service software
  • Safe handling for the concentrates on your shelf
  • Lure and glue board change schedules

Stock runs through your pest control software's inventory screens or a separate inventory system. A barcode scanner speeds up receiving and counts. Expect spreadsheets for usage logs, plus state registration databases and supplier order sites.

Commercial pest control inventory specialist interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Unusual usage

One technician's usage logs show twice the product others use on similar accounts. What do you do?

A strong answer: Compares accounts and application records, tells the supervisor, and lets them review it, since it could mean overapplication, waste or misuse.

  2. Behavioral · Discrepancy detective work

Tell me about a time you found the real cause of an inventory gap.

A strong answer: Traced receipts, transfers and technician usage logs to the real cause and fixed the process.

Commercial pest control inventory specialist KPIs

Think of the template's targets as rough numbers to start from. After a few months of counts, reset them to what your shelf and routes show.

Inventory Accuracy
Pick a few items each week and count them by hand. Check each count against the system's number. Track how many match, and watch for items that come up short twice.
Reorder Timeliness
Set a reorder point for each item from its weekly use and the supplier's lead time. Compare each order date with the day stock hit that point. Count the late ones.
Chemical Logging Compliance
Compare product logged as issued with product on technicians' service records for the same weeks. Go over each gap with the technician. Note whether it was a logging error or a real loss.
Stock Availability
Count each time a technician needed an item the shelf didn't have. Divide by all requests for the period. List the items that ran out.

Commercial pest control inventory specialist FAQ

How do technicians who take trucks home get restocked?

Give each technician a weekly restock day, a standard truck list and a short form for extras. Some branches add locked cages so technicians can pick up orders between visits. The inventory specialist fills the orders and records what left. They also spot anyone who reorders an item far more often than their route explains.

How much does a commercial pest control inventory specialist make?

Shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $22.60 an hour ($47,010 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $39,520 and $55,800 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

What should the inventory specialist do when a product is cancelled?

Read the cancellation notice for the dates it sets for sale and for use of existing stock. Those dates can differ. Stop new orders and mark the stock you hold with its last-use date. Then tell technicians and the operations manager which product replaces it on each account's approved list.

Can someone from a food distribution warehouse do this job?

Often, yes. They already know first in, first out, lot tracking and receiving checks. They will need to learn pesticide labels, state registration lookups and the habit of logging every ounce that leaves. Ask in the interview how they kept lot records at their last job.

What tasks sit behind the template's lifting, bending and temperature lines?

Lifting cases of bait blocks, jugs of concentrate and boxes of traps onto shelves and carts. Bending to count stock on low racks, and walking the warehouse during counts. Some storage rooms run warmer or colder than the office, and the day moves between a desk and the stockroom.
