What's different about an operations manager at a remodeling company

Remodeling crews work inside occupied homes, with some utilities shut off and trades taking turns in small rooms. The operations manager plans around that every morning.

  • A gutted bathroom still needs a toilet

OSHA's construction sanitation rule says toilets must be provided for employees, with an exception for mobile crews who have transportation readily available to nearby toilets. When a remodel takes the home's only working bathroom out of service, order a portable toilet with the dumpster. Don't count on the homeowner's guest bath. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.51, sanitation.

  • Old outlets call for GFCI cords

OSHA's construction wiring rule gives employers two choices. One is GFCI protection. The other is a written program of cord and tool tests, known in the rule as an assured equipment grounding conductor program. Under the GFCI choice, outlets that aren't part of the building's wiring need a GFCI. Older homes often lack them in the rooms being gutted. So give every crew GFCI-protected cords, and pick one approach for the whole company. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.404, wiring design and protection.

  • Footings wait on the locate

In Kentucky, a company planning to dig, such as for an addition's footings or a deck, must notify the utility locate center between two and ten full working days before work begins. Locate requests last 21 calendar days, so ask for remarking two working days before each period runs out. Put the locate request on the schedule as soon as the start date is set. Source: Kentucky Revised Statutes 367.4911, notice before excavation or demolition.

  • Agree on the house rules before day one

Crews show up at a family's front door. Before the start date, agree with each homeowner on work hours, parking, key or lockbox access, pets and which rooms are off limits. Keep those notes in the job file where crew leads read them each morning.

  • Match the lead to the job

Lead carpenters aren't interchangeable: one is best at tile showers, another at basements. Match leads to the job types they do well, and fill short gaps with punch lists or warranty visits instead of idle days. That's how utilization rises without rushing the work.

Remodeling operations manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Covering a staffing gap

More jobs start next month than you have lead carpenters. Walk me through how you'd cover it.

A strong answer: Weighs options: move start dates honestly, step up a strong carpenter with support, use trusted subcontractors for parts of the scope, or limited overtime. Protects quality and tells sales early.

  2. Behavioral · Performance reviews

Tell me about a time you gave a hard performance review to a lead carpenter or installer about quality or callbacks.

A strong answer: Brought specific jobs, photos or callback data, set clear goals and a timeline, checked the next few jobs, and can say how it ended.

Remodeling operations manager FAQ

How is a remodeling operations manager different from a project manager?

Each project manager is responsible for certain jobs and their homeowners, from the first day on site to the final walkthrough. Shared resources belong to operations: crews, trade partner slots, equipment and materials. If two jobs both want the one tile setter for Monday, operations decides.

How much does a remodeling operations manager make?

General and operations managers who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $105,010 a year ($50.48 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $72,790 and $156,380 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

How should a Louisiana remodeling operations manager plan for hurricane season?

Keep a storm plan for every open job: who secures loose materials and dumpsters, who covers open roofs or walls, and how crews and homeowners get updates. Avoid opening exterior walls when a storm is in the forecast. After the storm, check each site before crews return, and expect delays from suppliers and inspectors.

What should a remodeling operations manager cover in the morning briefing?

Today's jobs and who is where, homeowner notes such as a new pet or a changed start time, deliveries and inspections due, and one safety point tied to the day's work, like dust control or cord checks. Keep it short and standing, and end with each lead naming anything that could stop their crew.

What does a remodeling operations manager physically do on a site visit?

Carrying a box of fixtures or a bundle of trim from the truck, bending to check floor protection, and walking through several jobs in a day. Visits happen in rain, heat and cold, near running saws and dust, so the manager wears safety glasses and hearing protection. List those tasks and the gear you provide in the ad.
