A remodeling sales rep visits homeowners to measure kitchens, baths and basements, then writes the estimate and signs the contract. They come back with a design and price, follow up until the family decides, and stay the main contact until the project manager takes over.

A remodel rep prices custom work inside someone's home, often over two or three visits, and the contract has to hold up through months of construction. These are the parts particular to remodeling.
Three days to cancel, at home or at a show
The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule covers a contract signed in the homeowner's house or at a rented spot such as a home show booth. You hand over a copy and a notice of the right to cancel, written in the language of your pitch, and the homeowner can back out within three business days. A deal negotiated during a visit to your permanent showroom can fall outside it. State laws can add more. Hold the cabinet order until the window closes. Test the basement before you finish it
EPA says it's especially important to test for radon before a major renovation, such as turning an unfinished basement into living space. If the test shows a problem, radon-resistant steps can be added cheaply during the work. EPA also says to test again when the work is done. Offer the test at the first visit, and put any fix in the estimate, not in a change order later. Source: U.S. EPA: A Citizen's Guide to Radon.
Shower glass falls under a federal standard
A federal safety standard covers the glass in shower and tub doors and enclosures. It aims to cut injuries when someone breaks the glass by contact. Homeowners sometimes find a cheap panel online and ask you to hang it. Quote enclosures from suppliers whose glass meets the standard. Name the maker and model in the contract so production orders the same one. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 1201.1, architectural glazing materials scope.
Sell the lines your installers know
Show the cabinet lines, tile and fixtures your crews already install. An unfamiliar brand brings new hardware, new install steps and a new company to call about warranty claims. If a homeowner insists on one, say in the proposal who handles its warranty and what changes in the price.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Measuring rooms accurately, including walls that aren't square and floors that aren't level
Spotting water damage, old wiring and framing that will change the price
Talking money plainly, including what a budget will and won't buy
Writing a detailed estimate a project manager can build from
Following up for weeks without pushing
Teach these on the job
Your price book, markups and estimating templates
The cabinet, tile and fixture lines you carry
Your contract, cancellation notice and payment terms
Permit and inspection steps in your towns
Your design software for floor plans and renderings
Expect a laser measure, sample boards for cabinets, counters and tile, and a tablet running the CRM and estimating software. Many remodelers also draw plans and renderings in software such as Chief Architect or SketchUp; tell candidates whether the rep or a designer makes them.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Handling a budget gap
A couple's wish list costs about twice their budget. How do you handle the conversation?
A strong answer: Says it early and kindly, helps rank priorities, offers scaled or phased options, and won't lowball to win.
Behavioral · Learning from losses
Tell me about a kitchen or bath remodel you lost after the first visit. What would you do differently?
A strong answer: Gives the specific reason (budget never discussed, a slow estimate, an unclear scope next to a cheaper bid), owns their part, and names a change they made, such as talking budget on the first visit.
Start from the template's targets, then set each rep's goals from your lead flow, your average job size and how long the rep has sold for you.
New Contract Signings
Tally each rep's signed contracts per month in the CRM, less any the homeowner cancels. Note job size beside the count, since one whole-home remodel can outweigh several small baths.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ask homeowners to rate the sales visits right after signing and the finished project at the closing walk-through. Flag any comment about a promise production never heard about.
Estimate Accuracy
Compare each estimate with the final job cost once the project closes, leaving out changes the homeowner chose. Go over the gaps with the rep line by line, such as missed demolition, framing or electrical work.
Sales Conversion Rate
Divide signed contracts by first consultations held, split by project type and lead source, so a rep isn't judged on leads nobody could close.

Senior design consultantSells whole-home and high-end projects.
Plan on two for kitchens and whole-home work: one to listen, measure and photograph, and one to present a design and price. A bath or basement with a set scope can sometimes close on the first visit if the rep has price book items for it. Big projects may need a third meeting once the homeowners have compared options.
How much does a remodeling sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $30.84 an hour ($64,150 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $47,110 and $95,580 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Should a designer or the rep go to the first appointment?
It depends on how you sell. Some remodelers send the rep alone to qualify the project and budget, then bring a designer to the second visit. Others send a designer who also sells, which works best on kitchens where layout drives price. Whichever you choose, keep one person in charge of the homeowner from first visit to signed contract, so questions don't fall between two people.
How should a remodeling rep handle a homeowner who has three bids?
Ask to see the other scopes, not just the totals, and lay them side by side with yours. Bids for the same kitchen can differ on cabinet grade, who pulls the permit, whether drywall repair and paint are included, and the allowance for tile or lighting. Point out the gaps without knocking the other company, and let the homeowner decide.
How long should a new remodeling rep shadow before running appointments alone?
Until they can measure a kitchen, build an estimate from your price book and explain your contract without help. First, have them ride along on first visits and on design and price meetings. Next, let them run visits with the manager there. Check their first estimates line by line before they go out alone.
What physical work goes with a remodeling rep's sample bags and site visits?
Carrying cabinet doors, counter samples and tile boards from the car into the house. Heading down to the basement to check the panel and pipes. Walking a yard where a window well or addition would go. Touring homes or businesses mid-remodel in heat, cold or rain. List these tasks in your posting so candidates can picture the job.
