What makes a siding warehouse different

A siding warehouse handles long, breakable product in many colors and sends it out on trucks every morning. These points set it apart.

  • Fiber cement travels on edge and stays dry

James Hardie says to store its boards flat, dry and covered, and warns that installing wet or saturated siding can lead to shrinkage at the joints. Its instructions say to carry boards on edge: one person holds the middle, or two hold near each end. Load trucks the same way, tarp loads on wet days, and don't send a soaked pallet out. Source: James Hardie: Hardie Artisan lap siding installation instructions (effective January 2023).

  • Box trucks can cross a federal line

FMCSA rules reach a truck, alone or with a trailer, that hauls property between states once either its rated or its loaded weight hits 10,001 pounds. A Rhode Island company with jobs in Massachusetts or Connecticut hits this often. Check the weight rating on each truck and trailer before you pair them, and confirm which FMCSA rules then apply. Source: eCFR: 49 CFR 390.5, definitions (commercial motor vehicle).

  • Local runs still need time records

A driver of such a truck can skip the federal logbook when they stay no farther than 150 air miles from the yard, are done and released inside 14 hours, and rest 10 hours before the next shift. In return, the company keeps a 6-month file of when each driver reported, total hours on duty, and release time. Source: eCFR: 49 CFR 395.1(e), short-haul operations.

  • Load in the order the crew installs

Crews start at the bottom of a wall: starter strip, corner posts and J-channel go on before most panels. Load those last so they come off the truck first, keep each color together, and tape a pick list with the job name and address to every load.

How much siding warehouse managers make

The closest BLS group for siding warehouse managers is transportation, storage, and distribution managers. Transportation, storage, and distribution managers who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $80,810 a year ($38.85 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $107,230 median for transportation, storage, and distribution managers in all industries. About 380 of the 221,180 transportation, storage, and distribution managers in that survey work for structure and exterior contractors.

Salaried, plus a bonus for performance. BLS puts the median for distribution managers at exterior contractors above this range, and a manager who has run a building-products yard may ask for more.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Experience leading a stockroom or yard team
  • Keeps counts right across many colors and part numbers
  • Plans morning loads and delivery routes without missing a job
  • Knows safe stacking, loading and tie-down for long material
  • Uses inventory software and Microsoft Office well

Teach these on the job

  • Your siding lines, colors and accessories
  • Federal truck rules for your fleet's sizes
  • Your job software and delivery ticket steps
  • Supplier return and damage claim steps
  • Your crews' install order and loading habits

Inventory software or the stock module in your job system, a label printer and a route planner run the office side. In the yard, forklifts, pallet jacks, cantilever racks for long panels, and box trucks or flatbeds with trailers do the moving.

Siding warehouse manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Loading trailers for multiple crews

Four crews leave at [7 a.m.] with different materials and colors. How do you make sure each trailer is right?

A strong answer: Load lists by job and color, staged and checked the night before, labeled boxes and a crew lead sign-off.

  2. Behavioral · Supervising loading accuracy

Tell me about a time a worker's loads kept sending crews out without the starter strip, J-channel or trim they needed.

A strong answer: Found the cause, such as no accessory list per job or rushed mornings, retrained the worker, added a job load list and a second check before trailers left, documented it and followed up.

Siding warehouse manager KPIs

Swap the template's example targets for your own once you've tracked counts and deliveries for a season.

Inventory Accuracy
Compare system counts with shelf counts in the daily stock audit, and track misses by product line and color so you can see where errors start.
On-Time Delivery Rate
Count a delivery as on time only when the full, correct load reaches the house by the time dispatch set. Short or wrong loads count as late.
Order Fulfillment Speed
Time from an order entering the system to the load being picked, checked and ready to ship, pulled from your inventory software's time stamps.
Equipment Downtime
Log the hours trucks, forklifts, trim brakes and saws are out of service against the hours they were needed. Note whether each stop was a breakdown or skipped upkeep.

Siding warehouse manager FAQ

Which tasks in a siding warehouse line up with the template's physical requirements?

Unloading vinyl cartons and accessory boxes, moving long fiber cement boards with a coworker, pulling trim coil off racks, and loading the next morning's trucks. The building can swing from summer heat to winter chill, and some work is done in cramped places, such as the back of a box truck. Equipment means forklifts, pallet jacks and power tools. Name each of these in the job ad, then put the same question to every applicant: can they perform these tasks, accommodated or not? If someone asks for an accommodation, discuss it then.

How much does a siding warehouse manager make?

Transportation, storage, and distribution managers who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $80,810 a year ($38.85 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $62,070 and $103,620 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Does a siding warehouse manager or delivery driver need a CDL?

Only for heavier rigs. Under FMCSA's CDL rules, a straight truck needs one once its weight rating hits 26,001 pounds, and so does a combination at that weight if its trailer's own rating is more than 10,000 pounds. Some passenger and hazmat cases count too. Read the rating on each truck and trailer before deciding who can drive what.

What should come back to the warehouse after a siding job?

Full cartons, unopened accessory boxes and long trim pieces, logged against the job they came from. Short cut-offs of vinyl and scraps of fiber cement go to the dumpster. Label returned panels with the product line and color before they go on a shelf, or they become mystery stock nobody trusts.

Should siding crews pick up material at the yard, or should the warehouse deliver it?

Once you run several crews, delivery usually wins. A crew that stops at the yard each morning starts late, and installers waiting on a forklift are paid hours with nothing going up. Load each house's stock items, such as trim coil, accessories and nails, the afternoon before, and get them there ahead of the crew. Keep a short pickup window at the yard for add-ons and service calls, and agree delivery times with dispatch.
