A siding sales representative visits homes, measures the walls, inspects the old siding and trim, and helps the owners choose a product, color and trim style. They write the proposal, explain the warranty and financing, and close the contract at the kitchen table.

Any rep presents and closes. A siding rep also has to work the warranty, the layer behind the siding and the age of the house into the sale.
Show the warranty before the signature
Federal warranty rules count siding bought for a home improvement as a consumer product. When the sale happens in the home, the rep has to say, before the sale, that the warranties are on hand. The homeowner can read them at any time during the talk. Printed sales sheets need the same notice. Keep current copies in the sample case or on the tablet. The bid should name the water barrier
The 2021 International Residential Code, as UpCodes shows it for South Carolina and Rhode Island, has a rule for this. Section R703.2 calls for at least one layer of water-resistive barrier on every outside wall. It must run unbroken behind the siding and tie into the flashing. Put the barrier product on the proposal. Then a homeowner with two bids can tell if the other one skipped it. Check which code your town uses. Old cement shingles change the job
OSHA's asbestos rule for construction lists taking off asbestos siding shingles as Class II asbestos work. That work has its own training and methods. When a rep sees old cement shingles, they should take photos, note them in the CRM and have the office set up a test. Don't make the price final until the result is in, since removal changes the job. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.1101, Asbestos (construction).
Don't sell a tax credit that ended
Homeowners still ask about the federal tax credit for energy-saving home upgrades. The IRS page for the credit stops at work done by December 31, 2025, so a job installed now won't qualify. Take any tax credit line out of the pitch and the proposal, and send questions about work from past years to the homeowner's tax preparer. Source: IRS: Energy efficient home improvement credit.
Ask about the windows before you quote around them
Windows and siding meet at the trim and flashing. If the owners plan new windows in the next few years, putting them in after the siding means cutting back new siding and trim at each opening. Ask about window plans on the walk-around. If new windows are coming, quote both jobs or agree on the order.
How much siding sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for siding sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $33.65 an hour ($69,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,670 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for structure and exterior contractors.
Most siding reps earn commission on signed jobs, often on top of a base, as the template shows. The BLS median for reps at exterior contractors is higher than the template's base, which leaves out commission.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Measures a house accurately, including gables, dormers, trim and soffit
Explains vinyl, fiber cement and insulated siding in plain words
Runs a full in-home presentation and asks for the sale
Writes proposals a crew can build from without guessing
Follows up without pressure tactics
Teach these on the job
Your makers' product lines, colors and warranties
Your price book, proposal software and financing plans
Spotting soft sheathing, failed flashing and possible asbestos siding
Local permit and neighborhood approval steps
Your CRM and appointment routine
Reps carry a tablet with proposal and CRM apps, a measuring wheel and tape, a phone camera for wall photos, and a case of panel, trim and color samples. Some companies add a moisture meter for probing soft spots, so say in the ad if you expect reps to carry one.
Siding sales representative interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Spotting possible asbestos siding
During an estimate, you notice the existing siding looks like old cement shingles that might contain asbestos. What do you tell the homeowner?
A strong answer: Doesn't guess. Explains it may need testing before removal and that removal may require licensed handling under state rules, includes that step in the options and notes it on the estimate.
Behavioral · Winning on value
Tell me about a siding job you won against a lower price. What made the difference?
A strong answer: Showed scope differences honestly, such as house wrap, flashing, trim and warranty, and the customer chose value.
The template's figures are examples to adjust. When a season's worth of your own appointments is on record, set targets that match your house sizes and product mix.
New Sales Contracts
Count signed contracts each month that stay signed past the cancellation window, using the CRM or the office's contract log.
Revenue per Contract
Add up the rep's signed contract value and divide by how many contracts were signed. Split it by product line so vinyl and fiber cement jobs aren't blended.
Closure Rate
Divide signed contracts by first in-home appointments that ran, counting a second visit to the same house as part of the first.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Use the feedback scores on each rep's finished jobs, and read the comments for anything the homeowner says was promised but not delivered.
Career path
Rehash specialistCalls lost estimates and hears what makes homeowners sign or stall.

Other roles in a siding & exterior cladding business
What does the outdoor and sample-carrying part of a siding rep's job look like?
Walking around each house to measure walls and look over the trim in summer heat, cold or light rain, carrying a sample case or panels from the car to the kitchen table, and driving between appointments across the territory. Describe this work plainly in your job ad. Then ask each candidate whether they can do that work, on their own or with a reasonable accommodation.
How much does a siding sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $33.65 an hour ($69,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $49,750 and $98,230 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Should our siding reps measure the house themselves?
Usually yes, on the first visit, since the price depends on it. Overhead measurement reports help with tall or hard-to-reach walls, but confirm details like trim, porches and soffit on site. Many companies also send a production person to re-measure after the sale, before anything is ordered, so a short order doesn't stall the crew.
How should a siding rep help homeowners choose between vinyl and fiber cement?
Start with what the owners care about: upkeep, look, budget and how long they plan to stay. Vinyl usually costs less and doesn't need paint; fiber cement looks more like painted wood and can be repainted a new color later. Show both side by side, price each one, and let the owners pick without pressure.
What makes selling siding different from selling roofs or windows?
Homeowners often replace a roof because it leaks and windows because of drafts, but siding changes how the whole house looks from the street. Owners spend longer on colors, trim styles and accents like shakes in the gables, and the neighbors see the result. A siding rep needs an eye for design and the patience to let the owners decide.
