What makes flooring installation different

Flooring goes in near the end of a job, when everyone wants to move in. The installer is also the first to find out what the old floor and the slab are hiding.

  • Old vinyl may hide asbestos

OSHA's asbestos rule says vinyl and asphalt flooring put down in 1980 or earlier must be treated as containing asbestos until it's shown not to. Resilient flooring, its glue and its backing are presumed to contain asbestos unless an industrial hygienist finds otherwise. Taking it up is asbestos work under that rule, done only by workers trained for it. EPA tells homeowners not to sand or level asbestos flooring, and to cover it with new flooring when they can. An installer who finds old flooring stops and calls the office. Source: 29 CFR 1926.1101: Asbestos in construction (eCFR).

  • Cutting tile and stone throws silica dust

Tile and stone that contain silica give off silica dust when cut. Under OSHA's construction silica table, a stationary wet saw for tile or stone needs no respirator when it feeds water to the blade. A handheld wet saw used indoors calls for a respirator no matter how briefly it runs. Cleanup uses water or a HEPA vacuum, not dry sweeping, unless neither will work. Source: 29 CFR 1926.1153: Respirable crystalline silica in construction (eCFR).

  • Knee pads are standard gear

In a 1990 alert, NIOSH tied carpet layers' knee problems to kneeling on hard floors and kicking carpet into place with a knee kicker. It recommended knee pads, and a power stretcher in place of the kicker. The template lists long stretches of kneeling for this job too, so stock good pads and let each installer pick a style that fits. Source: NIOSH Alert 90-104 (1990): Knee injuries in carpet layers (CDC Stacks).

  • Every adhesive comes with a data sheet

Flooring adhesives, primers, sealers and patching compounds each have a safety data sheet, or SDS. OSHA's hazard communication rule makes the employer keep those sheets where workers can reach them during every shift. A crew that drives from job to job may keep them at the home base, provided the information can be had right away in an emergency. Section 8 of each sheet lists the exposure controls and protective gear the product calls for. Source: 29 CFR 1910.1200: Hazard communication (eCFR).

  • The maker's instructions protect the warranty

A flooring warranty can hinge on how the floor went in. One vinyl maker's glue-down guide says every instruction must be followed for the warranty to count, and it wants the planks and adhesive to sit for two days in a space at normal living temperature and humidity first. Each product has its own rules, so the installer reads the guide that came with this job's flooring, not the one from last week. How much flooring installers make

The closest BLS group for flooring installers is floor layers. Floor layers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $27.57 an hour ($57,350 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $56,460 median for floor layers in all industries. About 18,100 of the 23,640 floor layers in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

The template's hourly pay has bonuses on top for efficiency and customer ratings. These BLS figures cover floor layers who put down vinyl and other resilient floors; carpet installers and tile setters each have their own code, so check those too if your installers mostly do one of them.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Installs at least two of luxury vinyl, laminate, hardwood, tile and carpet
  • Checks that a subfloor is flat, dry and solid before laying anything
  • Plans a layout so the cuts at walls and doorways look even
  • Cuts cleanly around door casings, cabinets and floor vents
  • Reads the install guide and adhesive label on every job
  • Works in occupied homes with floor covers and a tidy setup

Teach these on the job

  • The products and trims you sell, line by line
  • Floor patching and self-leveling compounds
  • Seaming carpet and using a power stretcher
  • Tile layout, setting and grout
  • Your daily log of work done and material used

Installers work with a tapping block and pull bar, a jamb saw and miter saw, notched trowels and a floor roller, a wet tile saw, and for carpet a knee kicker and power stretcher. In the ad, name the floors you install most and which tools you supply.

Flooring installer interview questions

Two of the 7 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Out-of-flat subfloors

You pull up old carpet and the subfloor is out of flat more than the maker allows. What do you do?

A strong answer: Stops, shows the customer and calls the project manager, and preps it properly once approved.

  2. Behavioral · Owning callbacks

Tell me about a callback on your work. What caused it?

A strong answer: Owns the cause, such as skipped prep or a missed expansion gap, and explains what they do differently now.

Flooring installer KPIs

Adjust the targets once your own install records build up. A builder's vinyl job and a tile remodel go wrong in different ways, so compare like with like.

Installation Accuracy Rate
Installs that match the order and layout with no recut, wrong direction or missed transition, out of all installs. Note when a bad measure caused the miss, not the installer.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Post-install ratings for this installer's jobs, along with comments on care for the home, cleanup and whether they said when furniture could go back.
Callback Percentage
Return trips for gaps, peaking, lifted seams, hollow tile or loose transitions, out of all installs. Tag the ones caused by slab moisture or a product defect.
Project Completion Efficiency
Installs finished on the booked day. Record why late ones slipped, such as missing trim, a wet slab or more floor prep than planned.

Career path

  1. Apprentice / helperCarries cartons, tears out old floors and learns to cut and fit.
  2. Flooring installerInstalls whole rooms and houses alone or with a helper.
  3. Lead installerRuns the crew on a job, checks the prep and trains new installers.
  4. Field supervisorMoves between jobs, signs off on installs and handles callbacks.

Flooring installer FAQ

Does a flooring installer need a license?

Ask the contractor licensing board in your state, since the rules differ by state. In California, the flooring and floor covering class covers carpet, resilient flooring and wood floors but leaves out ceramic tile, which falls under a different class. A company there that sells both should make sure its license covers tile before its installers set any.

How much does a flooring installer make?

Floor layers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $27.57 an hour ($57,350 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $45,920 and $77,580 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Is flooring certification worth asking for?

No federal rule requires it, and the template only lists it as preferred. CFI, a division of the World Floor Covering Association, offers courses and certifications in carpet, resilient, hardwood, laminate and ceramic. Say in the ad which ones you value and whether you'll pay for an installer to earn one.

Should I hire a specialist or an all-around installer?

Match it to your work. A shop doing mostly builder vinyl can hire for speed on click and glue-down plank. Remodel work calls for someone who sets tile one day and nails hardwood the next. BLS counts carpet installers, tile setters and other floor layers separately, which shows how often people specialize. Ask candidates how their last year split between floor types.

How do I test a flooring installer before hiring?

Book a short paid tryout. Have them check a small area of slab or plywood with a straightedge, lay a few rows of plank around a door jamb, and set and grout a handful of tiles. Watch whether they read the box instructions, undercut the jamb instead of notching the plank, and keep the floor clean.

How should a flooring ad cover kneeling and lifting?

List the tasks: kneeling for long stretches, carrying cartons, rolls and buckets up stairs, lifting loads of up to 50 pounds, and fitting floors in closets and small bathrooms. The template's stamina line describes a trait, not a task. In your own ad, swap it for these tasks and your real shift length, and mention the knee pads and tools you provide.
