What a flooring rep settles before the sale

A flooring sale rests on details the homeowner won't notice until the floor is down: how the room is heated, where the seams fall, how the boards differ from the sample. The rep raises them at the table, while they're still cheap to change.

  • Ask about floor heat first

Ask every customer whether the floor is heated. Evoke's 2026 vinyl guide is one example. Putting its pad-attached planks over radiant heat voids the warranty. The floor's surface should stay at 85 degrees or below, and the heat should run for at least two weeks before the install. The guide puts compatibility on the homeowner and recommends getting the heat maker's written OK. So the rep quotes only products approved for heat and notes the system on the order. Source: Evoke: Luxury vinyl installation guide (February 2026), radiant heat section.

  • The sample is a guide, not a promise

Shaw's laminate warranty for homes doesn't cover color differences between the floor and its samples or photos. Wood, stone-look and tile floors also vary from piece to piece. So the rep shows several boards or an open carton. The contract names the exact collection, color and grade. And the customer hears plainly that a whole room looks busier or calmer than one small sample. Source: Shaw Floors: Residential Waterproof Laminate Limited Warranty.

  • Show where the seams go

The Carpet and Rug Institute tells homeowners to ask for seams in less visible spots, and not to expect them to vanish. So the rep draws each seam on the diagram before the sale and walks the customer through it. Where the room allows, seams stay out of doorways and the middle of main rooms. A seam the customer first sees on install day becomes a complaint, even when it was laid right. Source: Carpet and Rug Institute: Installation tips for homeowners.

  • Stores and offices have ADA limits

The 2010 ADA Standards treat new flooring on a store's or office's circulation paths as an alteration. Carpet on an accessible route needs a pile of half an inch or less, a firm pad or none, and trim on exposed edges. Where two floors meet, a rise of a quarter inch or less may be square. Between a quarter and half an inch it needs a bevel no steeper than one in two, and anything higher needs a ramp. The rep checks heights and prices the right transition. How much flooring sales representatives make

The closest BLS group for flooring sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,910 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

Base salary plus commission, per the template. If reps also sell cartons or remnants over the counter with no install, set a separate rate for those sales, since they carry no measure, prep or crew time.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Measures a room and sketches seams and transitions accurately
  • Spots prep at a glance: a dip, a loose panel, a second layer of flooring
  • Explains wear layers, cores and warranties without jargon
  • Asks about pets, heat, stairs and moisture before suggesting a floor
  • Writes orders with every room, seam, stair and transition on them

Teach these on the job

  • Your collections, their install guides and their warranties
  • Stair and transition prices in your price list
  • ADA limits on commercial carpet and transitions
  • Your measuring app and flooring software
  • Which products your crews install best

Expect a laser distance meter, a measuring app, a sample bag and boards, a tablet running your quoting software, and a straightedge for checking the subfloor. A rep who finishes the drawing in the app before leaving the house catches a missed closet or stair while the homeowner is still there to show it.

Flooring sales representative interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Right product for the space

A customer wants solid hardwood in their basement on a concrete slab. What do you tell them?

A strong answer: Explains that solid hardwood generally isn't recommended below grade, offers engineered wood or vinyl, and mentions moisture testing.

  2. Behavioral · Follow-up

Tell me about how you followed up on a quote that turned into a sale.

A strong answer: Describes a planned follow-up with a useful reason to call, such as a new sample or a schedule opening, and the sale it led to.

Flooring sales representative KPIs

A rep who works mostly showroom walk-ins and one who runs whole-house measures won't land similar numbers, so set targets by lead type from your own records.

Sales Conversion Rate
Quotes the rep wrote that became signed jobs, by lead type: walk-in, home visit, builder or commercial. Count a sale once any cancel window has passed and the final measure confirms its size.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
After-install ratings on this rep's sales, read quarterly. Comments about color, seams and transitions point back to what was shown and written at the sale.
New Leads Generated
Work the rep turned up personally: a kitchen remodeler who sends clients over, a neighbor who watched the install, a property manager with units turning over. Each one gets a source tag in the CRM, so the count shows only what the rep found.
Revenue Growth
Installed revenue from the rep's jobs, against the matching months of last year, after cancellations and final-measure changes. Read it beside average margin, so growth doesn't come from giving away prep.

Career path

  1. Showroom associateLearns the collections and helps walk-in shoppers pick samples.
  2. Sales representativeMeasures, quotes and closes floors in homes, stores and offices.

Flooring sales representative FAQ

How should a flooring rep quote stairs?

Count every step and landing, and note the nose style. Stairs take far longer per foot than open floor. Carpet stairs can run waterfall style or wrap each nose. Vinyl and laminate stairs need stair nose pieces from the same collection, and those can run short even when the planks are in stock. Price stairs per step, never folded into the room's square footage.

How much does a flooring sales representative make?

Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $48,330 and $89,990 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

What should a flooring rep put on the order for the crew?

Everything installers would otherwise phone the office about. List the product and color, each room's square footage, the seam diagram and where each transition goes. Add the stair count and style, whether the floor is heated, who moves furniture and appliances, and what comes out first, such as old carpet or a toilet. Check the order against the drawing before it leaves your hands.

Which floor should a rep suggest for a home with big dogs?

Ask how the dogs use the house first: nails, accidents, water bowls. Then read each product's own warranty. Shaw's waterproof laminate warranty promises the floor will resist stains from cats and dogs. It also says no surface is scratch-proof, and it leaves out gouges from broken furniture feet and from falling objects. Let the customer drag a key across two samples before choosing, and write what they were told on the quote.

Which tasks fill a flooring rep's field time?

Driving between homes, stores and job sites. Carrying a sample bag and boards inside. Kneeling in a closet or at a vent to check the subfloor, and climbing stairs to measure upper rooms. Walking houses and stores still under construction. Post the template lines unchanged with these tasks beneath, plus a contact for accommodations.
