Flooring rehash specialist job description

A flooring rehash specialist picks up measures and quotes that stalled before anyone signed. They find out what held each one up, such as a cheaper quote, a color that's been dropped or a budget for only some rooms, then requote or send the rep or measure tech back.

What stalls a flooring quote

A flooring quote holds three things that can go stale while the homeowner waits: the measure drawing, the product and the price. The calls work best when the specialist knows which one changed.

  • Ask to see the other quote

Homeowners often hold a lower quote from a big-box store or a solo installer. Ask what it covers, line by line: tearing out and hauling the old floor, moving furniture, leveling, stairs, new base or quarter round, and transitions. A low price per square foot can leave those as extras that turn up on install day. Explain your own lines without criticizing the other company, and send real scope differences to the sales rep.

  • The color may be gone

Makers drop styles and colors, and the plank a homeowner picked last winter may not be orderable now. Before calling, check that the product on the quote is still made and still costs what the quote assumed. If it's gone, have two close matches ready and offer to drop off fresh samples. Quote only from today's price book, with the sales manager's sign-off on any change.

  • Some rooms now, the rest later

When the budget covers only part of the house, splitting by room can save the sale. Plan the break where a later order won't show: at a doorway with a transition, at the stairs, or where a different floor begins. A second order of the same color months later may come from another dye lot, and a new lot laid against the old one in an open room may not match. The sales rep confirms the break before it's promised.

  • Calling windows: federal days, Wyoming's own rule

In the FTC's rule, booking a measure on March 1 opens a registered number to your sales calls until about the end of May; a purchase or payment stretches that to 540 days. Wyoming's own law puts no clock on a relationship started by an inquiry; it lasts until either side ends it. Its stricter limits, no sales calls after 8 p.m. and none to unpublished cell numbers, reach only calls outside a relationship. The federal clock still governs registered numbers. • Store customers stay with the store

If your crew only measured or installed a floor that a store sold, the sale and the shopper are the store's. Leave the store's lost sales off the rehash list, even though your measure tech was in the house. The homeowner's inquiry went to the store, so it may not give you a calling window of your own, and the program agreement may bar contact outright. If one of those homeowners calls you about more rooms, note how they found you before quoting. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 310.2, Telemarketing Sales Rule definitions (established business relationship).

How much flooring rehash specialists make

The closest BLS group for flooring rehash specialists is telemarketers. Telemarketers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $17.30 an hour ($35,980 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $35,450 median for telemarketers in all industries. About 320 of the 58,430 telemarketers in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

Salary and commission, in the template's terms, with a starting base just above the upper-quarter mark of BLS pay for telemarketers at building finishing contractors. Say in the plan whether rooms added to a job already on the calendar earn the same commission as a quote brought back from lost.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Explains a measure drawing and a quote line by line over the phone
  • Sets another installer's quote beside yours and compares them fairly
  • Checks the calling window and both no-call lists before dialing
  • Spots when a revived job needs a fresh measure
  • Leaves every file with a reason and a dated next step

Teach these on the job

  • Your collections, dropped colors and closest matches
  • How your price book charges for prep, stairs and furniture
  • State telemarketing laws that go beyond the FTC's rule
  • Which store program customers are off limits
  • Logging calls and next dates in your flooring software

Lost quotes sit in your flooring software or CRM, each linked to its measure drawing, product and price. Beside them the specialist needs the warehouse's list of dropped colors and their nearest matches, and a dialer that checks each number against the federal registry and your own do-not-call list before it rings.

Flooring rehash specialist interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Price objections

A lead got a hardwood quote and went quiet, and the notes say too expensive. How do you approach the callback?

A strong answer: Asks what matters most, offers engineered wood or vinyl options or phasing, and books a new visit.

  2. Behavioral · Reviving measured leads

Tell me about a lead that went quiet after a measure that you later closed. What changed?

A strong answer: Explains why the lead went quiet, how they addressed it, and the result.

Flooring rehash specialist KPIs

Holidays, tax refunds and home sales can revive a batch of old quotes at once, so read each month next to last year's. Build a separate target for each stall reason from your own results.

Re-engagement Conversion Rate
Of the lost quotes reached, how many ended as installed, paid floors. Split it by why each one stalled: price, timing, the color or the rooms.
Callback Percentage
Here it means revived installs where a crew had to come back because rehash passed on something wrong: an old measure, a dropped color, a room left off. Divide by all revived installs, and write that meaning into the plan.
Additional Revenue Generated
Each month's invoices on revived jobs, net of refunds and final-measure changes. Show rooms added to an open job apart from quotes brought back from lost.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Post-install ratings on jobs rehash brought back. Read the call notes behind each low score, since a revived job can go wrong on the phone before a crew ever arrives.

Flooring rehash specialist FAQ

Can rehash cut the price on a lost flooring quote?

Change the floor before the price. Shoppers compare cost per square foot, so offer the same look for less: laminate or vinyl plank in place of hardwood, or carpet kept in the bedrooms with hard surface in the main rooms. Leveling, tear-out and stairs stay as quoted, since the house still needs them. If price still blocks the sale, the sales manager decides whether the floor's price can move.

How much does a flooring rehash specialist make?

Telemarketers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $17.30 an hour ($35,980 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $31,460 and $39,570 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

When does a revived flooring quote need a new measure?

When anything in the rooms has changed: new cabinets or an island, a wall moved, a different floor type in mind, or rooms added. Switching from carpet to plank changes the overage and the prep, so the old drawing won't do. A measure tech or the rep visits again, and the new price reaches the homeowner in writing before anyone orders.

Which lost flooring quotes are worth a call first?

Quotes whose floor is still made at the quoted price, since those can be signed on the call. Next come homeowners who were waiting on something with a date, such as new cabinets or stair railings going in first. Quotes lost to a lower price come last, and only where the calling rules still allow a call. When you reach one, ask whether the other company's job left any rooms undone.

Does a flooring rehash specialist ever lift anything heavy?

Rarely, and never more than the template's 20 pounds: a bag of fresh samples left at a homeowner's door, or sample boards carried in for a second look with the rep. It isn't warehouse work. Keep the template line, list those errands under it, and say whom to ask about an accommodation.
