Where a framing marketing manager spends the effort

A framing company can count its possible customers: the builders, general contractors and remodelers working nearby. It can only take on as many of them as it has crews. So this manager markets to two short lists, the people who choose framers and the framers who might join a crew.

  • Yards and truss plants hear first

Lumber yard and truss plant reps call on many of the builders you want, and they often hear first when a builder's framer is behind or short of crews. Keep those reps current on which communities you frame, how many crews you run and when you'll have room. Give them photos of finished frames to show around. Log each referral under its own source, so you can see which yard's reps send real work.

  • Social posts reach framers more than builders

Videos of walls going up and trusses being set draw views, often from framers and other trades. Check who follows before deciding what the channel is for. If it's tradespeople, make it a hiring channel: a link to open jobs in every post and a where-did-you-hear question on the application. Screen each clip first: on home building, OSHA generally requires guardrails, nets or personal fall arrest once a framer is 6 or more feet above the next level down. Win builders with visits, email and the project list. Source: eCFR: 29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13), fall protection in residential construction.

  • Hiring posts follow the job ad rules

The EEOC says a help-wanted post can't signal a preference for, or put off, applicants because of sex, national origin, age 40 or over, disability or another protected trait. Federal age rules name words such as young, boy and recent college graduate, so a crew video captioned "young guys wanted" fails, while "framers and helpers wanted" doesn't. Share openings beyond the crews' friends and family too: the EEOC warns that word-of-mouth hiring can be unlawful when nearly every new hire ends up of one national origin. HR approves the wording. Source: EEOC: Prohibited employment policies and practices (job advertisements and recruitment).

  • Back every speed claim with the logs

Builders pick framers on schedule, so a case sheet saying your crews frame a two-story plan in a set number of days will be read closely. Build that number from the dispatcher's stage dates for that plan, not from a best week, and show the range. Update the sheet each quarter. A purchasing manager may check it against what their own superintendents saw on your lots.

How much framing and carpentry marketing managers make

Marketing managers who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $133,660 a year ($64.26 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $166,790 median for marketing managers in all industries. About 270 of the 395,240 marketing managers in that survey work for structure and exterior contractors.

Salary comes first in this template, plus bonuses for campaign success and lead goals. Its entire range sits under the tenth percentile on this page's BLS chart for structure and exterior contractors, so anyone who has marketed to builders before will expect more. Either pay above it or hire a marketing specialist and grow the job.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Has marketed to builders for a trade, supplier or truss plant
  • Builds case sheets and project lists from real stage dates and photos
  • Writes hiring posts around the tasks, not the kind of person wanted
  • Keeps a current contact list of purchasing managers and supplier reps
  • Has filled field jobs through social posts or recruiting campaigns

Teach these on the job

  • The stages of a frame, from floor deck to sheathed roof
  • Which builders you frame for now and which you want next
  • Your yard and truss plant reps and the builders they serve
  • HR's job titles, posting steps and application questions
  • Your CRM, website platform and social accounts

Expect a CRM with a record for every builder, contractor and remodeler contact, photos and video filed by community and framing stage, and the HR applicant system, so each hire can be traced to the post that found them. If the job includes recruiting posts as well as builder marketing, say so in the ad, since someone who has done only one is signing up for a second job.

Framing and carpentry marketing manager interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Growing finish carpentry

The owner wants more homeowner finish work: built-ins, trim and stairs. Where do you start?

A strong answer: Builds a strong photo portfolio, service pages and a current Google Business Profile, partners with designers, and tracks leads by service.

  2. Behavioral · Design partnerships

Tell me about a time you built relationships with interior designers or architects.

A strong answer: Explains how they reached out, such as lunch-and-learns or a portfolio of built-ins, what they offered, and the number of jobs or revenue it brought.

Framing and carpentry marketing manager KPIs

The template's lead and conversion targets fit a company chasing many small jobs. A framing company may add only a few builders a year, so read builder numbers over a full year and homeowner requests month by month.

Leads Generated
Count a builder, general contractor or remodeler the day they send plans or ask to meet. Keep homeowners on a separate line, and tag yard and truss plant referrals with the rep who sent them.
Customer Conversion Rate
Accounts that signed a price sheet or subcontract, out of those that got a price, read across a full year, since builders award slowly. Homeowner jobs signed out of homeowner estimates are a separate rate.
Brand Engagement
Comments, shares and saves each quarter, split by who engaged: framers and trades, builders, or homeowners. Set the totals beside the applicants and builder meetings that named social media as their source.
ROI on Campaign Spend
For builder campaigns, compare the margin on lots the new builders released in their first year with everything the campaign cost. Judge hiring campaigns by the framers they found who are still on a crew a season later.

Career path

  1. Outside sales rep at a lumber yardCalls on builders and learns who frames for each one.
  2. Marketing coordinatorShoots frames at each stage and runs the company's social accounts.
  3. Marketing managerMakes the company known to builders and to the framers it needs to hire.
  4. Director of marketingAdds a second market's builders and recruiting, or the launch of a panel line.

Framing and carpentry marketing manager FAQ

Who owns a builder account, marketing or sales?

Sales, once there's a price to give. Marketing earns the first meeting with a builder's purchasing team and keeps the contact record: who was met, when, and what they asked for. Sales prices and signs the work, and the general manager handles superintendents day to day. When a rep leaves, marketing's record means the next one doesn't start cold.

How much does a framing and carpentry marketing manager make?

Marketing managers who work for foundation, structure, and building exterior contractors earned a median of $133,660 a year ($64.26 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $99,990 and $171,910 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Can we post videos of our framers at work?

Yes, with care. Get each framer's signed OK before their face goes online, and keep a copy. Film from where the lead says to stand. Before a clip posts, have the field supervisor watch it for anyone near an open deck edge or stairwell without a rail or harness, or a nailer used carelessly. A clip a builder or an inspector could fault does more harm than no clip.

How much framing should a framing marketing manager know?

Enough to talk with a purchasing manager without slipping. They should know the order a house goes up, what happens on a truss day, and why a builder cares about inspection results. A few days on lots with a lead and a field supervisor teach most of it. In the interview, have them caption a few of your own job photos and see whether they name each stage correctly.

Where does a framing marketing manager's job go outside the office?

The template's lines on desk work, carrying small promotional items, trips to job sites, trade shows and client meetings, and an office base with outdoor visits ship as written. For a framer, list the visits themselves: photographing a frame before the house wrap covers it, walking a builder's community in a hard hat, and setting up a trade show display with a sample wall section. Add a contact for accommodation requests.
