What makes finance at a cleaning company different

A CFO in any business keeps the cash plan and the books. At a residential cleaning company, the money sits in hourly labor, many small recurring charges and a long list of state rules.

  • Drive time is paid time

Housekeepers go from home to home all day. The Department of Labor says travel from job site to job site during the workday counts as hours worked. If teams earn a share of each job's price, overtime is still figured from all hours worked in the week, drive time included. The CFO builds pay plans and prices that still work once every hour is counted. Source: U.S. Department of Labor: Fact Sheet #22, Hours worked under the FLSA.

  • Tips belong to the housekeepers

Customers often tip through the booking app or on their card. The Department of Labor says an employer may not keep any part of employees' tips, and managers and supervisors may not take a share of the team's tips. Under federal law, the employer may hold back only the card company's fee from a card tip. The CFO sets up payroll so each tip reaches the right housekeepers and can be traced. Source: U.S. Department of Labor: Fact Sheet #15, Tipped employees under the FLSA.

  • Sales tax depends on the state

Whether house cleaning is taxed depends on the state. The Texas Comptroller tells maid services to collect sales tax on the charge to clean a home. Florida's statute names only nonresidential cleaning in its list of taxable services. A company operating in two or more states needs the right setup in each one, and the CFO owns registration, collection and filing. • Wage floors keep moving

Many states set their own minimum wage above the federal one, and some adjust it every year by formula, as the Department of Labor's state table shows. Housekeeper pay moves with those floors while recurring customers sit on set prices. The CFO plans price changes ahead of each wage increase and makes sure customers hear about them before the new rate starts. Source: U.S. Department of Labor: State minimum wage laws.

  • Many small charges add up

Revenue arrives as thousands of small card payments, one per visit, plus some gift cards and prepaid packages. Cancellations, lockout fees and first-time deep cleans all change what a home is worth. The CFO tracks revenue per cleaning hour by service and branch. That one number tells you whether move-outs, deep cleans or weekly homes are carrying the company.

How much house cleaning chief financial officers make

The closest BLS group for house cleaning chief financial officers is chief executives. Chief executives who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $130,000 a year ($62.50 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $213,990 median for chief executives in all industries. About 430 of the 204,350 chief executives in that survey work for building services companies.

Salaried. The yearly bonus usually rides on profit, cash and closing the books on time.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Forecasts cash weekly and updates it when the calendar changes
  • Knows hourly payroll, overtime and payroll tax in more than one state
  • Gets the month closed fast and tells branch managers what it means
  • Prices services from labor hours, not guesswork
  • Sets approval rules for refunds, chargebacks and payroll edits

Teach these on the job

  • Your booking software and how its data reaches accounting
  • Your team pay plans and tip process
  • Sales tax setup for each state you serve
  • Your insurance, bonding and damage claim history
  • Branch reporting and cost codes

Plan on QuickBooks Online, Xero or another accounting package, a payroll system that handles tips and several states, and a booking system like BookingKoala, ZenMaid or MaidCentral that stores customer cards and job records. How well those three connect decides how much of the job is fixing data by hand.

House cleaning chief financial officer KPIs

Before the CFO starts, set each target from the budget and last year's actuals, and report all four to the CEO monthly.

Revenue Growth
Revenue for each branch and service line against the matching months of the prior year. Split recurring service from one-time cleans, since a busy move-out season can make a flat year look strong.
Budget Variance
Each month, put every branch's revenue and costs next to its budget. When a line is far off, find the cause, such as unfilled hours or a jump in supply prices, and reset the forecast for the months left.
Operational Cost Efficiency
Operating costs, such as office staff, rent, software, insurance and vehicles, against revenue, compared with last year. Settle with your outside accountant which costs belong in it, then compare branches with each other.
Financial Reporting Timeliness
The date each report reaches the owner against its due date: monthly close, cash forecast, sales tax filings and payroll reports. Every late report gets a cause and a fix.

Career path

  1. Senior accountantHandles payroll accounting, reconciliations and sales tax filings.
  2. ControllerOwns the monthly close, payroll and branch reporting.
  3. Chief financial officerOwns the forecast, pricing and bank relationships.
  4. Finance chief at a larger groupMoves up to a bigger company, often after a merger or sale.

House cleaning chief financial officer FAQ

Is a fractional CFO enough for a cleaning company?

It can be. A bookkeeper or controller handles the daily entries, while a part-time CFO comes in for the forecast, price increases and bank meetings. Go full time when the work outgrows a part-time schedule: branches in a new state with its own sales tax and wage rules, an acquisition, a franchise program, a sale, or payroll errors that keep coming back.

How much does a house cleaning chief financial officer make?

Chief executives who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $130,000 a year ($62.50 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $102,340 and $208,630 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Do you still need a controller once you hire a CFO?

Often, or a strong bookkeeper in that seat. The controller makes the numbers right: payroll entries, card deposits matched to jobs, refunds, sales tax and the monthly close. The CFO decides what to do with them: when to raise prices, how much cash a new branch needs, which services earn money, and how to borrow. Without a controller, a CFO ends up fixing entries instead of planning.

Which numbers should a cleaning company CFO watch each week?

Cash on hand and the forecast, paid hours against hours spent cleaning (the gap is drive time and downtime), overtime by branch, recurring customer count, cancellations, and card disputes and refunds. Each month, add profit for each branch and each service. These numbers show trouble weeks before the profit and loss does.

Should a cleaning company CFO be a CPA?

A CPA brings real value here, mainly for audits, tax work and getting ready for a sale or investors. A finance leader without one can still be the better pick. In the interview, have them price a deep clean from labor hours, walk through how a card tip reaches a housekeeper's paycheck, and explain a bad branch month in plain words.

What belongs in a cleaning company CFO job ad?

List revenue, branches, the states you operate in, and housekeeper headcount. Then describe who handles money today: bookkeeper, controller, outside accountant, and who files sales tax in each state. If you're entering a new state, refinancing or selling soon, say so. It shapes who will want the job.
