What makes HR at a cleaning company different

Housekeepers make up most of the staff, and they work inside customers' homes with no manager in the room. Keeping enough of them on the schedule sits at the center of the job.

  • You recruit against hotels and private homes

BLS estimates there were about 1.33 million maids and housekeeping cleaners in 2025. About 412,000 worked in hotels and other lodging and about 264,000 for private households, against about 94,000 at cleaning and other building services companies, the group yours falls in. BLS expects that last group to grow through 2035 while the other two shrink. Hotels clean rooms every day of the week, so weekday daytime hours with a steady small team can be your edge. Source: BLS Employment Projections: Maids and housekeeping cleaners (37-2012) by industry, 2025 and 2035.

  • Hiring rules change at the state line

When branches sit in different states or cities, job posts and background checks can follow different rules. California's Fair Chance Act covers employers with at least five workers and keeps conviction questions out of hiring until after a job offer. Employers there with 15 or more workers must put a good-faith pay range in every job post, including the piece-rate range if you pay by the job. Build each branch's posts and offer steps around its own rules. Source: California Labor Commissioner: Equal Pay Act and pay transparency FAQ.

  • Building services aren't exempt from the injury log

OSHA excuses some low-risk industries from its injury and illness log. Cleaning and other building services companies are not on that list, so expect to keep one once you pass 10 employees. A strained back that needs a doctor's care, or a chemical splash that keeps someone home, can belong on it. Injuries happen in customers' homes, so have leads call them in the same day. OSHA wants a hospital admission reported within 24 hours. Source: OSHA: Partially exempt industries (29 CFR 1904 Subpart B, Appendix A).

  • Early quits cost the most

A housekeeper who quits on day three takes the background check, the training hours and a short-handed team's lost visits with them. HR tracks when people leave and why, by branch and by trainer. If quits bunch up in the first week, look at who trained the new hire, whether they were sent to clean alone too soon, and whether their first check was right and on time.

How much house cleaning HR managers make

The closest BLS group for house cleaning HR managers is human resources managers. Human resources managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $109,990 a year ($52.88 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $149,280 median for human resources managers in all industries. About 420 of the 220,660 human resources managers in that survey work for building services companies.

Paid by salary, and the template adds a performance bonus. Goals like time to hire and retention make natural measures for it, and the offer should rise with the number of branches and states the job covers.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • High-volume hiring for hourly, entry-level jobs
  • Wage, hour and hiring law for every state with a branch
  • Hearing both sides when a customer complains about a housekeeper
  • Keeping I-9 and background check paperwork ready for an audit
  • Building enough trust with housekeepers that problems surface early

Teach these on the job

  • Your cleaning checklists and how teams learn them
  • How per-home team pay and tip shares are figured
  • Reading the booking calendar to spot staffing gaps early
  • Each branch's state and city hiring rules
  • The recruiting and HR software you already own

Day to day, the job uses a job board account such as Indeed or an applicant tracking system, an HR and payroll platform such as Gusto, Paychex or ADP, and the booking calendar, which shows a staffing gap before anyone reports it. Share your usual weekly applicant volume in the posting, since sorting a flood of housekeeper applications is a different job from sorting a trickle.

House cleaning HR manager KPIs

Work from the template's goals for three months, then reset them by branch from your own hiring and quit records. Go over them monthly with the COO.

Time-to-hire
Count the days between posting a housekeeper job and the new hire's first paid shift, using dates from your recruiting system. Keep each branch separate, and cleaning jobs separate from office jobs.
Employee retention rate
Of the staff on payroll on the first day of a quarter, count how many are still there on the last day, by branch. Watch new hires apart from long-time staff, since the two tell different stories.
New hire satisfaction score
A short star-rating survey sent to each new hire after their first week and first month, with room for comments. Read the comments by trainer and branch, not just the average.
Onboarding completion rate
New hires who finished every onboarding step in their first month, such as paperwork, chemical safety training and training cleans with a lead, as a share of everyone hired that month.

Career path

  1. Lead housekeeper or field supervisorSome start on a cleaning team and move into training new hires.

House cleaning HR manager FAQ

Which tasks belong to HR at a house cleaning company?

Filling housekeeper openings comes first, then getting new hires trained. HR writes the job posts, runs or oversees interviews, orders background checks with the right consent forms and runs onboarding. It keeps the hiring paperwork and the OSHA injury log. It also coaches branch managers on write-ups, customer complaints about staff, and staff complaints about customers.

How much does a house cleaning HR manager make?

Human resources managers who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $109,990 a year ($52.88 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $90,180 and $145,660 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

What hiring records does a cleaning company need to keep?

A Form I-9 for every hire. USCIS gives the employer three business days from the hire date, meaning the first day of work for pay, to finish Section 2. Before you buy a background report, the FCRA calls for a written notice that stands alone, not buried in the application, and the person's signed OK. If the report might cost them the job, they get a copy and their FCRA rights summary first. Keep the OSHA injury log once you pass 10 employees, plus time and pay records.

How can a cleaning company keep housekeepers longer?

Ask the ones who stay and the ones who leave, then look for the reasons you control: knowing the schedule a week ahead, cleaning with the same team, a pay stub that clearly shows tips and drive time, and a lead who checks in during the first week. Fix the top reason at each branch before adding perks.

Should a cleaning company's HR manager work at the main office or the branches?

Both. Records, payroll questions and job posts can run from the main office. But housekeepers trust the HR person they have met, so plan regular branch days for onboarding, team meetings and one-on-one talks. Branch visits also show you problems that never reach a report, like a broken vacuum or a lead who is short with new hires.

What should a house cleaning HR manager job ad include?

Give the size of the job first: headcount, branches and states. Say whether the HR manager recruits housekeepers directly or supports branch managers who do. Make clear who owns payroll, chemical safety training and workers' comp claims, since those land in different places at different companies. Mention hiring events, travel between branches and who this role reports to.
