What changes for a CMO in junk removal

Many households hire a hauler only now and then, so the CMO has to keep finding new customers. Five things shape the job.

  • Many customers book only once

A family clearing a parent's house or a tenant moving out may never call again. Repeat work comes from people who deal with junk every month, like real estate agents, apartment managers, estate lawyers and builders. The CMO splits the budget between one-time homeowners and those referrers. They also fund the partner program and the materials the business development manager and branch GMs sell.

  • The truck is the loudest ad

A wrapped truck sits in a driveway for hours while the neighbors watch the crew work. The CMO owns the wrap design, the uniforms and what the truck promises, such as same-day service. That promise has to match what dispatch can deliver. A muddy truck or a rude crew can undo the paint job, so the CMO and operations set the standards together.

  • Charity tie-ins come with legal strings

Donation partners make a good story. But in California, an ad saying each booking helps a named charity can make the company a commercial coventurer. It must then register with the Attorney General and file yearly reports. It can skip that only if two of the charity's officers sign a written contract before the ad runs, and the company passes on what the campaign raised within 90 days and every 90 days after, with a written accounting. Have a lawyer review any give-back campaign. Source: California Government Code 12599.2: Commercial coventurers.

  • Testimonials set an expectation

A customer quote about speed or price reads as what most customers get. FTC guides say that without proof a testimonial's result is typical, the ad should clearly state what customers can usually expect. So a video of a crew that showed up within the hour needs your usual arrival time beside it, unless most customers really do get that. The CMO sets that rule for every branch, agency and partner who runs your ads. Source: 16 CFR 255.2: Consumer endorsements.

  • The call center finishes the sale

Junk removal leads arrive as calls, texts and web forms, and a rep has to turn each one into a booked window. The CMO listens to calls with the customer service manager. They check that reps quote the same price ranges the ads show, and they report booked jobs by source. When booking rates slip, the fix may be the script or staffing, not the ad.

How much junk removal CMOs make

The closest BLS group for junk removal CMOs is marketing managers. Marketing managers who work for waste management companies earned a median of $159,550 a year ($76.71 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $166,790 median for marketing managers in all industries. About 200 of the 395,240 marketing managers in that survey work for waste management companies.

Salary plus bonus. The template also lists commission tied to leads and possible equity. In a hauler with one brand and a handful of branches, the CMO leads one department, not the whole company, so BLS pay for marketing managers is a fairer guide than chief executive pay. Tie variable pay to booked revenue and acquisition cost, so cheap leads that never book can't earn it.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Has run a budget across several channels and cut spending that didn't turn into paid jobs
  • Has built a referral program that a group of branches could run the same way
  • Reads call center and booking reports and ties them back to campaigns
  • Manages agencies and in-house staff against written goals
  • Writes brand rules that cover trucks, uniforms, ads and social posts

Teach these on the job

  • How junk removal is priced by truck volume, with extra charges for heavy loads
  • The items your crews refuse, so no ad promises to take them
  • What each donation and recycling partner accepts
  • Booking swings by season and market in your area
  • The reports in your booking and field software

The CMO works from the booking system's lead source reports, call tracking that ties each phone lead to a campaign, a Google Business Profile for every branch, and a simple CRM for referral partners. Tell candidates how many markets the role covers and which work an agency does today, such as wrap design, video or search.

Junk removal CMO interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Lead-to-job conversion

Leads are up, but booked jobs are flat. What do you look at first?

A strong answer: Lead quality by source, call answer rate, CSR booking rate, price objections, out-of-area and spam leads. Listens to calls with the customer service manager.

  2. Behavioral · Brand leadership

Tell me about a brand or positioning change you led. How did you know it worked?

A strong answer: Names before-and-after numbers such as booked jobs, average ticket or review volume.

Junk removal CMO KPIs

Base every target on your own booking history and spend before posting the job, and revisit them yearly.

Lead Generation
Count leads inside your service area for jobs you actually do, with a working phone number or email, by source each month. Leave out wrong numbers and requests for refused items.
Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
Add up ad spend, agency fees, wraps and promotions, then divide by new customers who finished a paid job that month. Report homeowners and referral accounts separately.
Campaign Conversion Rate
Booked jobs divided by leads for each campaign, taken from the booking system rather than the ad platform, so calls that never booked count against the campaign.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Average the stars across review sites and your after-job survey, by branch and by month. Read the trend next to the QA specialist's complaint patterns before setting next year's goal.

Junk removal CMO FAQ

When is a junk removal business big enough for a CMO?

Once you run several branches and spend real money on ads, wraps and partner programs, someone on the leadership team has to own that budget and the brand. A company in one market can often do well with a strong marketing manager instead. The test: do marketing calls keep landing on the CEO's desk with no one else to make them?

How much does a junk removal CMO make?

Marketing managers who work for waste management companies earned a median of $159,550 a year ($76.71 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $117,010 and $182,940 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.

Should the call center report to the CMO?

It can go either way. Putting booking under marketing makes one leader answer for a lead from the first click to the booked window. Keeping it under customer service or operations keeps reps close to dispatch and complaints. If the CMO doesn't own it, agree on one shared booking-rate report and a weekly review with the customer service manager.

How is the CMO different from the marketing manager?

The marketing manager runs campaigns: local search, social posts and community outreach. The CMO sets the budget, brand and goals, and the CEO holds the CMO to the results. The CMO also ties marketing to pricing and the call center. In a junk removal company with both, the marketing manager and paid ads specialist carry out the CMO's plan.

What should a CMO interview include?

Hand finalists last year's spend by channel, booked jobs by source and a few months of call center numbers. Ask where they would move money, what they would test first and what they would ask the call center. Strong candidates ask about pricing, refused items and referral partners before they talk about ad platforms.
