A junk removal inside sales rep answers the calls, chats and web forms that reach the call center and turns them into booked pickups. They ask what is in the pile, quote the range the company allows, and lock in a truck and an arrival window before the caller tries the next hauler.

Most inside sales jobs work a list of prospects. Here the prospects call in, often with a pile in the driveway and a date in mind, and the first company to give a clear price and a time usually gets the job.
Callers want a price for a pile they can only describe
No one can price a garage to the dollar over the phone, because the final number depends on how much of the truck the load fills. The rep asks what is there, roughly how big, and how far it sits from the curb, or has the caller text a few photos. Then the rep gives the range your price sheet allows and says the crew confirms the price before anything is loaded.
Answer fast or lose the job
Treat every unanswered call as a job lost to the next listing on the caller's screen. A web form left until tomorrow may already be booked with someone else. The rep works the form and chat queue between calls, replies within minutes while the office is open, and logs why each lost lead went elsewhere: price, timing or no answer.
Hourly reps get overtime, bonus included
A rep paid by the hour is owed time and a half past 40 hours a week. A bonus promised for hitting the KPIs isn't discretionary, so it goes into the regular rate that sets the overtime pay. The commission exemption needs all three: a retail or service establishment, a regular rate higher than the minimum wage times one and a half, and commissions making up more than half of pay over a representative period. An hourly wage with a KPI bonus almost never passes that last test. Source: U.S. Department of Labor: Fact Sheet #20, commissioned employees of retail and service establishments.
Marketing texts need written consent
Texting a caller about the quote they asked for is one thing. A spring cleanout promotion sent later is marketing. Before marketing calls or texts go out through an autodialer or a recorded voice, federal rules require the person's signed written agreement, and an online signature counts. A reply such as stop or unsubscribe withdraws it, and the rule caps the time to stop at ten business days. The FCC is revising parts of these opt-out rules, so check the current text before you set up texting. Source: 47 CFR 64.1200, delivery restrictions on calls and texts (Cornell LII).
Commercial callers get handed on
A property manager booking a move-out, an agent clearing a listing or a remodeler with a pile of debris may become a repeat account. The rep books today's job, notes the company and the caller's role, and passes the lead to the business development manager the same day. Ask who will pay the invoice before the truck goes out, since the person meeting the crew often isn't.
How much junk removal inside sales reps make
The closest BLS group for junk removal inside sales reps is customer service representatives. Customer service representatives who work for waste collection companies earned a median of $21.51 an hour ($44,740 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $44,770 median for customer service representatives in all industries. About 4,880 of the 2,595,750 customer service representatives in that survey work for waste collection companies.
Hourly pay plus a KPI bonus, as the template lays out. BLS has no code for inbound junk removal sales, so the pay figures use customer service representatives, the code whose pay sits nearest the template's hourly range.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
A warm, quick phone manner that gets to a booked time
Asks the questions that size a load: rooms, stairs, heavy items, parking
Types clean notes while talking, so the crew arrives knowing the job
Holds the price sheet when a caller pushes back on price
Keeps the form, chat and text queue moving between calls
Teach these on the job
Your price sheet, minimum charge and fees for heavy material
Items your crews won't haul, and where to send those callers
How to judge volume from a customer's photos
Your booking software, phone system and call tracking
When a job needs an on-site estimate instead of a booking
Consent and opt-out rules for follow-up texts
Reps book jobs in a field service platform like Workiz, Jobber or ServiceTitan, take calls on a cloud phone system with call tracking, and answer chats and texts from the same screen. Name the booking system in your posting and say whether the job includes live chat and texting, since some candidates have only worked phones.
Junk removal inside sales rep interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Web lead response
A web lead asks for a price on 'a garage full of stuff' and says they're getting three quotes. How do you respond?
A strong answer: Responds within minutes, asks for photos or a few details, gives a range by truck fraction, explains the free on-site price check and offers a window. Follows up the same day.
Behavioral · Converting price shoppers
Tell me about a time you turned a price shopper into a customer.
A strong answer: Asked what the other quote included, explained on-site volume pricing, insurance and donation in plain words, offered a time that suited them, and booked without a discount beyond policy.
Pull four weeks of your own call logs before setting targets, and judge each rep only on the calls they could have booked.
Lead Conversion Rate
Booked jobs divided by sales-ready leads the rep handled, from the CRM. Leave out spam, wrong numbers and callers outside your service area, and track phone, form and chat on separate lines.
Call Response Time
How long callers wait between the first ring and a live voice, from your phone system's reports. Break it out by hour, because Saturday mornings and lunch breaks are where answer times slip.
Appointment Booking Accuracy
Booked jobs that reached the crew with the right address, window, item list and access notes. Count every job where the crew had to call back or showed up with too small a truck.
Follow-up Completion Rate
Web inquiries that got a call or text back inside your set window, from timestamps in the CRM. Look at each miss and note the cause.
Is an inside sales rep the same as a customer service rep in junk removal?
Not quite. The inside sales rep works new requests and is judged on how many become booked jobs. The customer service rep looks after people already on the schedule: changes, arrival questions, invoices and small problems. Smaller haulers have one person do both. With a central call center, splitting the jobs lets you see who is good at closing and who is good at keeping customers happy.
How much does a junk removal inside sales rep make?
Customer service representatives who work for waste collection companies earned a median of $21.51 an hour ($44,740 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $38,650 and $50,780 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
When should a call go to an estimator instead of being booked?
Write the list down so reps don't guess. Common ones: a whole house or estate, a hoarding cleanup, several truckloads, light demolition such as a shed, deck or hot tub, and any business that needs a written proposal. Also send it out when the caller won't book without a firm price. The rep sets the estimate time on the same call, so the lead doesn't cool off.
Can inside sales reps work from home?
Yes, if your phone system, CRM and booking software all run in the cloud and calls can be recorded and scored. The harder part is coaching, since a new rep learns a lot by hearing others take calls. Many companies keep new hires in the office for training. Remote reps still need accurate time records, because overtime rules apply at home too.
The template says the rep sits for long periods. What should the ad say?
Describe the work: most of the shift at a desk with a headset, typing notes while talking, in your office or from home. Don't ask applicants whether they can sit or stand for hours. EEOC guidance bars questions about abilities like sitting, standing or walking before a job offer unless they are about doing the job's tasks. If a candidate asks for a change, such as a sit-stand desk, talk it through.
How do I test an inside sales candidate?
Run a role play. You are a caller with a basement full of old furniture who asks how much it costs, then says another company was cheaper. Score whether they asked about size, stairs and access, gave a range without being pinned to one number, offered a time, and wrote usable notes. Then hand them a web form and ask for the text they would send back.
