What a sales manager watches at a window and door company
Window deals close at kitchen tables, often with a loan form and a sample corner on the table. The manager sets the rules for what reps can promise there.
Loan paperwork needs the holder notice
Many window sales close with financing the company arranges. The FTC's Holder Rule bars a seller from taking a loan's proceeds when it refers buyers to that lender or is tied to it by common control, contract or business arrangement, unless the credit contract includes the rule's notice. That notice makes whoever holds the loan subject to the buyer's claims and defenses against the seller. Read every lender's contract for that notice before reps pitch the plan. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 433.2, preservation of consumers' claims and defenses.
American-made has a federal test
The FTC's Made in USA labeling rule bars a Made in USA label unless the product is assembled here, every significant processing step happens here, and all or almost all of its parts are U.S.-made and U.S.-sourced. Ask each maker where the frame, glass and hardware come from, use the maker's exact wording in the pitch book, and hold reps to it at the table. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 323.2, Made in USA labeling rule.
Approve the specials before the contract
Arches, custom colors, oversize patio doors and odd door swings take longer to build and often can't be returned. Have reps send you those lines before the homeowner signs. Check the size, the lead time the maker quotes and the install plan, so no rep promises a date the order can't meet.
Split the number three ways
Revenue grows when reps sell more jobs, more openings per job or better product lines. Break each rep's month into those three parts. A rep with a strong close rate but small jobs may be leaving the rest of the house unquoted, and that calls for coaching, not more leads.
How much window and door sales managers make
Sales managers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $124,650 a year ($59.93 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $148,270 median for sales managers in all industries. About 1,170 of the 637,080 sales managers in that survey work for building finishing contractors.
Expect a salary plus a team bonus or override on sales. The template's salary trails the BLS median above, so the bonus plan carries a lot of weight in the offer.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Has run in-home sales and can still run a consultation
Coaches from ride-alongs and CRM notes, not just the leaderboard
Builds and defends a price book with clear discount limits
Reads a sales forecast against the install backlog
Hires reps carefully and lets them go fairly
Teach these on the job
Your product lines, glass packages and warranties
The lender programs you offer and their paperwork
Your CRM, quoting tool and contract software
How each maker's ordering and lead times work
Pricing lead-safe work on homes built before 1978
The manager works in the CRM, the quoting tool reps use at the table and the lenders' portals. Ask finalists to show you a sales report they built and what they changed after reading it.
Window and door sales manager interview questions
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Protecting customers and the brand
Your top-selling rep also has the most cancellations and two complaints about pressure tactics this month. What do you do?
A strong answer: Reviews the deals and complaints, rides along, sets clear standards for honest selling, ties consequences to them, and honors every cancellation.
Behavioral · Coaching product knowledge
Tell me about a rep you coached to explain glass packages and frame materials well enough that homeowners could compare quotes fairly.
A strong answer: Taught the real differences, such as NFRC numbers, frame materials and install type, in plain words, role-played competitor comparisons, rode along, and tracked close rate and average job.
The template's targets are placeholders. Base each one on your own sales history across at least two full seasons.
Revenue Growth
Set each month's signed and installed revenue beside that month last year, so a slow winter isn't judged against a busy summer. Report each branch or territory separately.
Sales Conversion Rate
Sold contracts divided by consultations the reps actually ran, from the CRM. Leave out no-shows and reschedules, and track each rep's rate next to the team's.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Average the survey scores for the sales visit, sent after the contract is signed and kept apart from the install survey.
New Sales Leads
Count qualified leads that reps find themselves, from referrals, repeat customers and builder contacts, apart from leads marketing pays for.
Career path
Sales representativeRuns consultations and learns the products, the price book and the contract.
Sales managerLeads the reps, sets the price rules and owns the monthly number.
General managerRuns a branch with sales, operations and service under one roof.
Should a window sales manager sell to home builders too?
Only if the company is set up for it. Builders buy by the house plan, want a contractor price and expect delivery on the site schedule. That's a different job from selling one homeowner at a kitchen table. If you add builders, give that work its own price book and its own person.
How much does a window and door sales manager make?
Sales managers who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $124,650 a year ($59.93 an hour) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $83,970 and $153,740 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and bonus terms.
Who pays when a maker raises prices after the contract is signed?
Plan on the company covering it, since the homeowner signed a price. Put a clear expiration date on every unsigned quote, and tell reps the day a maker increase takes effect so new quotes use the new list. Get orders for jobs signed just before an increase in quickly.
Can someone without window experience run a window sales team?
Yes, if they've led in-home sales of other big home projects such as roofing, gutters or kitchen remodels. The products can be learned through ride-alongs and maker training. Harder to teach is coaching reps through a slow month without pushing them toward pressure tactics.
What does the sales manager template's lifting and travel wording cover?
Carrying a sample window corner, a door cutaway or a carton of brochures into a training room or another branch, within the 25-pound limit the template names. Travel means trips to other offices, ride-alongs with reps and the odd maker training or trade event. Otherwise it's desk work and team meetings.
