What a sales rep does differently at a window and door company

A window rep sells a product built later, to sizes the rep wrote down at the visit. The paperwork and the tape measure matter as much as the pitch.

  • Say the warranty copies are in the bag

The FTC's warranty rules count materials bought for a home improvement job as consumer products, and storm windows are one of the examples they give. When the sale happens in the buyer's home, the seller has to disclose, before the sale is final, that the rep carries copies of the warranties, which the buyer can look through whenever they like during the presentation. That disclosure is spoken and printed in any materials shown. Source: eCFR: 16 CFR 702.3, pre-sale availability of written warranty terms.

  • A door's rating depends on its glass

NFRC rates a door based on its glass configuration, so the same door style can carry different numbers depending on the glass it has. When a homeowner picks decorative glass or sidelights, look up the rating for that exact setup before you talk about comfort or energy use. Source: NFRC: Understanding window, door and skylight ratings.

  • Measure for the order

The rep's numbers become the maker's order, and a custom window that's off by an inch can turn into a remake. Measure every opening the same way each time, at several points across the width and height. Write down what's in the way, such as alarm sensors, blinds and trim, and take a photo of each opening for the office and the crew.

  • Look past the glass

A soft sill, a water stain under the window or loose trim outside changes the job and the price. Note what you find and price the repair at the table. A homeowner who hears about rot for the first time on install day feels misled, even when the crew is right.

How much window and door sales representatives make

The closest BLS group for window and door sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 19,910 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building finishing contractors.

Reps here earn a base plus commission on what they sell. Because the template's base falls below the BLS median shown, compare those figures with base plus a normal year of commission, not base alone.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Runs a long in-home visit and keeps it on track
  • Measures carefully and writes orders others can build from
  • Explains price and financing in plain words
  • Asks for the sale and accepts a no politely
  • Updates CRM notes and follow-ups the same day

Teach these on the job

  • Window styles, frame materials and glass packages
  • Reading NFRC ratings for windows and doors
  • Your measuring method and order forms
  • The cancel notice and financing paperwork
  • Lead-safe rules that change quotes on older homes

The kit is a tablet loaded with the CRM and a quoting app, plus a measuring tape, a small level and corner samples. Say in the ad whether the company supplies the tablet and samples, and whether reps drive their own car.

Window and door sales representative interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Handling 'we'll think about it'

At the end of your presentation, the homeowner says they want to think about it and get other quotes. What do you do?

A strong answer: Respects it, asks what they're weighing, leaves a clear written quote, sets a follow-up time, and doesn't invent a one-day price.

  2. Behavioral · Accuracy on estimates

Tell me about a sale where something you missed in the measure or scope caused a problem later.

A strong answer: Owns the miss, explains how it was fixed with the customer and crew, and names the check they added.

Window and door sales representative KPIs

These template targets are rough guides. Set the real goals from your own lead flow, season and average job size.

New Sales per Month
Signed contracts each month that clear the cancel period, taken from the CRM. Show jobs that later cancel or shrink on a separate line.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Average the survey sent after install, and read the sales questions on their own, since a late delivery can drag down a good sales visit.
Estimate Accuracy
Compare the rep's measurements and price with the check measure and the final invoice. Count change orders and remakes traced back to the rep's order.
Conversion Rate
Signed contracts divided by consultations the rep ran in the home, from the CRM. Leave out appointments the homeowner canceled before the rep arrived.

Window and door sales representative FAQ

Should a window rep take a job for just one window?

Usually, but price it right. A single window still needs a visit, a measure, an order and a crew trip, so set a minimum job price and say it up front.

How much does a window and door sales representative make?

Sales representatives of services who work for building finishing contractors earned a median of $31.25 an hour ($64,990 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $48,330 and $89,990 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

How much installation knowledge does a window rep need?

Enough to spot what will change the job: rot, an odd size, a brick opening or a door that swings the wrong way for the room. The rep doesn't install, but a day or two riding with a crew teaches more than a binder. Reps who know the install make fewer promises the crew has to walk back.

Should a window rep check HOA rules before quoting?

Ask at the first visit. Some associations limit frame colors, grid patterns or patio door styles on the street side. A quote the HOA turns down can cost the sale or a remake. Ask the homeowner to send the rules, and note any approval the job needs in the contract.

What do the rep template's site, weather, lifting and vision lines mean?

Walking around the outside of the house to look at each window, sometimes in rain, heat or snow, and going up and down stairs to measure every room. Carrying samples and a door corner in from the car, no more than the 25 pounds the template lists. Reading measurements, the price sheet and the contract, and talking through options with the homeowner face to face.
