How an exterior cleaning assistant's day differs

A helper on any crew carries gear. On a wash crew the assistant also keeps engines, pumps and chemical tanks working all day and protects the property around them.

  • The rig check happens before the truck leaves

Each morning the assistant checks oil and fuel on gas units, looks over hoses and wand fittings for wear, cleans nozzle tips and fills the soft wash tank for the day's jobs. A cracked hose found at the shop costs a few minutes. One that bursts at a customer's house costs the morning. Give the assistant a written checklist and a lead who signs it.

  • Gas engines stay outside

Garage floors and covered patios tempt crews to roll a gas machine in close. NIOSH tells employers to keep gas engines outdoors, at least 20 feet from windows, doors and other openings, and away from air intakes, and to run only the high-pressure wash line inside. The exhaust carries carbon monoxide, and NIOSH lists pressure washers among its sources. The assistant who parks the machine owns this rule. Source: CDC/NIOSH: Carbon monoxide hazards at work.

  • Labels and data sheets ride along

OSHA's hazard communication rule says safety data sheets for each hazardous chemical must be readily available to workers during their shift. A crew on the road may leave the sheets at its home base, provided workers can reach the information immediately if something goes wrong. Each container on the truck carries a label with the product and its hazards. A bottle someone fills from a labeled container, for their own use right then, is the one exception. Source: OSHA: Hazard communication (29 CFR 1910.1200).

  • The company picks the gear

OSHA's PPE rule has the employer assess each job's hazards, choose the protective gear, and certify that assessment in writing. Each worker is trained on when the gear is needed, how to wear and adjust it, its limits and its care. With a few exceptions, the employer pays for required gear. On a wash crew that often means eye protection, chemical-resistant gloves and boots with good grip. Source: OSHA: Personal protective equipment, general requirements (29 CFR 1910.132).

  • Plants, outlets and cars come first

Before the first spray, the assistant soaks plants with plain water, covers outdoor outlets and light fixtures, checks that windows are shut, and asks the customer to move cars and pets. After the wash, the plants get a second rinse. These steps are easy to rush, and they decide whether the customer sees a clean house or a brown shrub.

How much exterior cleaning assistants make

The closest BLS group for exterior cleaning assistants is janitors and cleaners. Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s about the same as the $36,840 median for janitors and cleaners in all industries. About 829,300 of the 2,209,760 janitors and cleaners in that survey work for building services companies.

Cleaning crews have no helper code at BLS. The figures here are for all janitors and cleaners, seasoned workers among them. Expect a new assistant to start below that median. The template's bottom rate is under the state minimum wage in more than ten states and DC, so check your own state's rate. Name the skill that brings the next raise, for example finishing a house wash without help.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • At the shop and ready to load at the start time, every day
  • Works through a checklist the same way each morning
  • Handy with small engines and pumps, or keen to learn
  • Speaks up about a hazard before the spraying starts
  • Polite and brief with customers, and hands bigger questions to the technician

Teach these on the job

  • Checking hoses, nozzles, oil and fuel
  • Placing the machine and laying hose without kinks or trip spots
  • Mixing soft wash batches from your written recipe
  • Prepping plants, outlets and windows
  • Running a surface cleaner on flat concrete

Assistants handle the pressure washer, hose reels, surface cleaner, soft wash tank and pump, extension wands, ladders, tarps and plant covers, plus a grease gun and a kit of spare nozzles and O-rings. If your rigs are on trailers, say whether the assistant will tow one.

Exterior cleaning assistant interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · High-pressure leak safety

A high-pressure hose starts spraying from a fitting while the technician is working. What do you do?

A strong answer: Tells the tech to stop, never grabs or covers the leak with a hand because high-pressure water can inject into skin, shuts the machine off and relieves pressure before anyone touches it.

  2. Behavioral · Mechanical aptitude

Tell me about a time at work, school or volunteering when you fixed or maintained a tool, engine or machine.

A strong answer: Explains what was wrong, how they figured it out, and what they did, with care for safety.

Exterior cleaning assistant KPIs

Score an assistant on what they control: a ready rig, a safe site and a technician who never waits on them. Go over the numbers once a week in the first season.

Equipment readiness rate
Mornings the rig left the shop with every checklist item done, out of shifts worked. Note which item was missed, so retraining goes after one task at a time.
On-site safety incident rate
Count injuries, near misses and property damage on the assistant's jobs against hours worked. Never reward a low count, because that can push people to keep injuries quiet.
Technician support efficiency
A short weekly rating from each technician the assistant worked beside, on setup speed, hose handling and following directions. Ask for one real example with every score.
Customer satisfaction rating
Read comments on jobs the assistant worked for mentions of wet furniture, sprayed cars, harmed plants or hoses left on the lawn. Those parts of the visit belong to the assistant.

Career path

  1. Yard, detailing or rental shop workOutdoor work with small engines, hoses or other people's property.
  2. Assistant technicianPreps the rig, protects the property and learns each surface.
  3. TechnicianRuns stops alone, from walk-around to walkthrough.
  4. Lead technicianLeads a crew and trains new assistants.

Exterior cleaning assistant FAQ

Can teenagers work as exterior cleaning assistants?

Only for some tasks. Federal child labor rules keep workers under 18 out of all work "on or about a roof," which the rule defines as work on or in close proximity to a roof, gutter and downspout work included. Some apprentices and student-learners are exempt. Workers aged 14 and 15 also may not operate, clean or repair "any power-driven machinery," and may not do "all work requiring the use of ladders, scaffolds, or their substitutes." Your state's child labor law may add more limits.

How much does an exterior cleaning assistant make?

Janitors and cleaners who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $17.21 an hour ($35,790 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $30,590 and $38,520 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Does an exterior cleaning assistant need experience?

The template wants one year of support work in home services. Landscaping crews, car detailing, equipment rental yards and small engine shops build the same habits: early starts, care with machines and respect for a customer's property. If you'd hire someone without that year, change the line in your copy of the template before you post it.

What does an assistant do while the technician sprays?

They move hose so it doesn't drag through flower beds, watch for people and pets walking toward the spray, keep the machine fueled and rinse plants as the tech moves along the house. They also get the next task ready, like unloading the surface cleaner, so the tech never stops to wait.

When is an assistant ready to become a technician?

When they can run a full stop while the tech watches: the walk-around, setup, the right pressure or mix for each surface, cleanup and the talk with the customer at the end. Give roof soft washing its own sign-off. Use a checklist the lead signs rather than a set number of months.
