An exterior cleaning sales representative walks properties, from big homes and roofs to HOA common areas and storefront sidewalks, then writes and closes the quote. They name the surface and method for each part of the job, check roofs from the ground or the air, and find much of their own work.

A simple house wash can be quoted from a map. The rep's work starts where the map runs out: back slopes hidden from the street, decks with their own care rules, and buyers who vote at a meeting.
A hobby drone may not be cleared for quotes
A rep who looks over a steep rear roof or an upstairs deck from the air is flying for the business, so the FAA's Part 107 rules apply. The catch is the drone many reps already own. The FAA says a drone registered under its recreational exception can't be flown under Part 107, and a registration can't move between the two. The flyer needs a Remote Pilot Certificate, and a registered drone must broadcast Remote ID. Source: FAA: How to register your drone.
Ask what the deck is made of
Composite decks come with the maker's cleaning rules. Trex, for example, allows a pressure washer of no more than 3100 psi with a fan tip, held at least 8 inches from the boards, on its Transcend, Enhance and Select lines. On its early-generation decking it doesn't recommend pressure washing at all, and says doing so voids the warranty for any damage it causes. Products with bleach or acid lighten the boards. The rep finds the brand and age, then writes the method into the quote. Source: Trex: How to clean a Trex deck (example maker's care guide).
HOA boards buy at a meeting
A community job is decided by a board, usually by vote at a scheduled meeting. The rep walks the common areas with the community manager, prepares a bid the board can read in a minute, and asks for time on the agenda to present it. Bring a certificate of insurance and references from other communities you wash, since boards tend to ask for both before they vote.
Leads the rep brings in
The template sets a monthly count of qualified leads the rep generates, so the office can't be the only source. Good places to look: real estate agents with listings to photograph, community managers who run several HOAs, restaurant groups whose dumpster pads need regular washing, and window or gutter companies that don't wash houses. Log each source in the CRM along with what it signed.
How much exterior cleaning sales representatives make
The closest BLS group for exterior cleaning sales representatives is sales representatives of services. Sales representatives of services who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $29.31 an hour ($60,970 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s below the $69,990 median for sales representatives of services in all industries. About 40,700 of the 1,256,010 sales representatives of services in that survey work for building services companies.
Pay here is a base salary with commission, as the template sets out. Say whether commission is earned when a job is sold or once the wash is done and billed, since a wet spring can push a March sale's wash into May.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach
Hire for these
Tells a soft wash surface from a pressure wash surface on sight, part by part
Writes quotes that name the method, the areas included and what's left out
Presents to a board or a property manager as easily as to a homeowner
Finds their own leads and logs every one
Gets a clear quote to the customer before the day ends
Teach these on the job
Your price list, bundles and approval limits
Vinyl, fiber cement, stucco, shingle and composite surfaces, and their makers' care rules
Flying a drone under Part 107, if you use one
Your bid packet, insurance certificates and contract terms
Your quoting app and satellite measuring tool
The kit: a tablet with the quoting app, a measuring wheel for long driveways and parking lots, binoculars for roofs and, where the company uses one, a drone registered for Part 107 use. Tell applicants whether the company supplies the drone or expects reps to bring their own.
Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.
Situational · Honest expectations
The customer asks you to promise their rust and oil stains will come out. What do you say?
A strong answer: Explains that some stains may only lighten, offers a test area or treatment options, and doesn't promise.
Behavioral · Closing
Tell me about a sale you closed after the customer said no at first.
A strong answer: Found the real concern, such as damage risk or timing, answered it honestly, and the customer chose to book.
One board vote can bring in as much as a month of house washes, so read homeowner, HOA and commercial results apart. Set each rep's targets from their own past seasons.
New Sales Deals Closed
Signed quotes each month, with an HOA community or commercial contract counted once and its value beside it. Without the value, a rep chasing the count will pick a pile of driveways over one shopping center.
Quote Conversion Rate
Of the quotes the rep gave this month, the share that signed, split into homeowner, HOA and commercial. A roof quote unsigned after a few weeks isn't lost yet; hand it to the rehash specialist on a set date.
Customer Satisfaction Rating
Ratings from the rep's sold jobs, read beside the crew's notes on each. When the notes show a surface skipped or a method changed on site, the quote missed something on the walk.
Lead Generation
Count the leads a rep opens on their own each month, by partner type, and how many of each signed. Drop a partner type that hasn't signed anything after a full season.
Career path
Lead technicianHas washed every surface the company sells, which keeps quotes realistic.
Sales RepresentativeWalks properties, writes quotes and opens new accounts.
Commercial account managerKeeps and grows the company's largest contracts.
Sales managerHires the reps and decides how leads and commission work.
What does the template's walking line mean for a sales rep?
The line in question is "Capacity to stand or walk for extended periods during site evaluations." Here that means walking around a large house, an HOA's common areas or a shopping center lot while measuring and taking photos. Your ad should list those tasks, not the person's stamina, and invite questions about accommodations, such as a cart on a big commercial site.
How much does an exterior cleaning sales representative make?
Sales representatives of services who work for building and home services companies earned a median of $29.31 an hour ($60,970 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $45,780 and $78,150 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.
Should a rep do a test spot before quoting?
On surfaces where the result is uncertain, yes, with the owner's okay: a gray weathered fence, old sealer on pavers, a stained composite deck or painted trim that may not take the mix. A small test shows what will and won't come off before anyone signs. Have a trained tech do it with the company's mix and photograph it. If the test fails, quote the job without that area, or pass on it.
How should a rep answer whether roof cleaning affects a shingle warranty?
Don't guess. ARMA, which speaks for asphalt roofing makers, states that cleaning chemicals or methods other than a bleach and water solution should not be used without the shingle maker's approval. So the rep notes the shingle brand if known, says what your mix contains, and points the homeowner to that maker's warranty terms. Never write that cleaning won't affect a warranty.
How fast should a rep send the quote after a visit?
Before leaving the driveway for a simple job, and within a day for an HOA or commercial bid. Attach the photos from the walk, marked with the areas included, so the customer can see what they're paying for. A rep who promises a quote by Friday and sends it Tuesday has already told the customer how the job will go.
