What makes handyman inventory work different

A builder's stockroom feeds a few long jobs. A handyman stockroom feeds many vans, and each one makes several stops a day for a mix of small tasks.

  • Many small parts, a few of each

One morning's route might call for a toilet flapper, a deadbolt, drywall anchors and a quart of touch-up paint. Build a standard stock list for each van from your service menu, and restock it from each tech's used-parts log after the last call. Parts that sit untouched on every van are the first to cut from the list.

  • Drinking water parts must be lead free

Federal law bars using any pipe, fitting, fixture, solder or flux that isn't lead free to install or repair plumbing that supplies drinking water. That covers the faucets, supply lines and shutoff valves techs swap every week. Parts used only for non-drinking water, such as irrigation and outdoor watering, are exempt, as are toilets and fill valves. Keep exempt brass in its own bin, and buy drinking water stock with a lead-free certification mark. Source: U.S. EPA: Use of lead free pipes, fittings, fixtures, solder and flux for drinking water.

  • Treated lumber takes its own fasteners

Deck boards, fence pickets and outdoor steps are mostly pressure-treated wood. The American Wood Council's deck guide, written to the model residential code, says screws, bolts, nails, washers and nuts used with treated wood must be copper, silicon bronze, stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized. It also warns against aluminum touching lumber treated with copper-based preservatives. Stock those boxes on every van, label them for outdoor wood, and check the code your area adopts. Source: American Wood Council: DCA 6, Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide.

  • Property managers name their parts

A property manager with many rental units often wants the same paint color, lock brand or blind size in every one. Keep a short parts sheet for each account, stock the common items, and attach the sheet to their work orders. The tech then shows up with the right finish instead of buying a near match at a store on the way.

How much handyman inventory specialists make

The closest BLS group for handyman inventory specialists is shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks. Shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $22.86 an hour ($47,540 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That’s above the $45,260 median for shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks in all industries. About 680 of the 816,870 shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks in that survey work for residential builders and remodelers.

Wages here are hourly, and bonuses follow efficiency and savings results. The template's range sits within the spread BLS reports for this clerk code at residential builders.

Skills to hire for, and what you can teach

Hire for these

  • Knows common repair parts by sight, from anchors and fill valves to door hardware and caulk types
  • Counts carefully and records every delivery the day it lands
  • Turns a tech's rough parts note into the right reorder
  • Plans stock from the jobs already booked for the coming week
  • Works comfortably in inventory software and spreadsheets

Teach these on the job

  • Your van stock lists and end-of-day restock routine
  • Vendor accounts, pricing and delivery cutoffs
  • The markings on lead-free plumbing parts and outdoor fasteners
  • Parts sheets for each property manager account

Most of the day runs through inventory software or the parts module in your field service app, a barcode scanner or phone for counts, and the vendors' pro account portals for orders. Name your system in the ad, and mention vendor runs in a company vehicle if the role makes them.

Handyman inventory specialist interview questions

Two of the 6 questions we'd ask, and what a strong answer sounds like. Ask every candidate the same questions, and rate each answer on your own before you compare notes.

  1. Situational · Cutting store runs

Technicians are making three or four supply-store runs a day. What do you look into?

A strong answer: Which parts and why, then adds common items to van stock, pre-orders by job and checks booking notes for missing details.

  2. Behavioral · Finding count errors

Tell me about a time van stock counts kept coming up short. How did you track down the cause?

A strong answer: Compared restock logs with job tickets, found the specific cause such as parts used but never logged, and fixed the process.

Handyman inventory specialist KPIs

Use the template's targets only as a rough guide. Measure a few months as things stand, then set targets the specialist can see and change.

Inventory Accuracy
Compare counted stock with system records for a sample of shelf and van locations each week, and divide matching lines by lines counted. A right quantity in the wrong spot still counts as a miss.
Order Fulfillment Time
Hours between sending an order and having it received and shelved or loaded. Track stock orders apart from same-day orders for a waiting job, since they run on different clocks.
Cost Savings
Track materials spend per job closed, plus write-offs for expired, damaged or lost stock, against the budget the warehouse manager sets each quarter.
Stock Turnover Rate
Divide the cost of materials used in a period by what the stock on hand was worth on average, for the shop and the vans separately. List slow movers by part to see what to cut.

Handyman inventory specialist FAQ

How often should a handyman company count the stock in its vans?

Count the costly items, such as faucets, locksets and smoke alarms, at each restock, since they walk away most easily. Do a full count of each van on a regular rotation, so a few vans get checked every week instead of all of them on one weekend. Compare the count with the parts techs logged on jobs, and talk with the tech about any gap.

How much does a handyman inventory specialist make?

Shipping, receiving, and inventory clerks who work for residential builders and remodelers earned a median of $22.86 an hour ($47,540 a year) in May 2025, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The middle half earned between $38,100 and $54,400 a year. Pay also depends on your local market, experience and overtime.

Does the inventory specialist track tools too?

Usually not. Tools and shared equipment fit better with the warehouse manager, whose duties already cover them. The inventory specialist tracks what gets used up on jobs: parts, fasteners, sealants and finish materials. The specialist should still log a broken or missing tool they find while restocking and pass it to the warehouse manager.

What should happen when a tech reaches a job without a part the van list says they had?

Log it as a stock miss with the van, the part and the job. Then find the cause: the van wasn't restocked, an earlier job used the part without logging it, or the list itself is wrong. Fix the cause, not just the van. The dispatcher handles any change to the customer's visit.

What experience makes a good handyman inventory specialist?

Time behind the counter at a hardware store, a home center or a plumbing supply house is the closest match. People from those jobs know that a fill valve, a flapper and a wax ring are three different things, and they can match a part from a blurry photo. Warehouse experience helps with counts and receiving, but part knowledge is harder to teach.

What stockroom work do the template's lifting and temperature lines describe?

The specialist unloads cases of caulk, boxed toilets and bags of patching compound from delivery trucks, then walks the shelves to pick each van's restock. They bend to low bins and reach to high shelves, and they load vans in the lot in summer heat or winter cold. Some shops are unheated, so the stockroom itself can be cold.
